Medlen (elbow) is headed to the Royals' spring training complex to face live hitters for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last March, MLB.com's Jeffrey Flanagan reports.
Medlen started throwing off a mound two weeks ago, so this is the logical next step in his progression. If everything goes well, he could start a minor-league rehab assignment by the end of May, which would give him a chance to join the Royals in June. The team doesn't have an obvious opening in its starting rotation, but a lot could happen over the next month or two.

Medlen (elbow) threw curveballs off a mound this week for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Medlen, who was recently moved to the 60-day DL, is continuing an arduous recovery from his second Tommy John surgery. He'll soon head to the Royals' spring training complex in Phoenix to complete a few rehab outings in May, with his sights set on being available to the Royals in the second half. He'll need a spot to open up in the starting rotation in order to have a major fantasy impact, but could also be useful for the team in long relief.
Sat Mar 7 201512:55Medlen placed on 60-day disabled list
Medlen has been placed on the 60-day disabled list, according to the team's official twitter account
Medlen is working his way back from his second Tommy John surgery, which caused him to miss the entire 2014 season. He was moved to the 60-day DL to make room for the newly inked Chris Young.
Thu Dec 18 201415:23Kris Medlen: Two-Year Deal With Royals
Medlen (elbow) signed a two-year contract with the Royals on Thursday that includes a mutual option for 2017.
The Braves were pushing to re-sign Medlen to a two-year deal after declining to tender him a contract earlier this month, but a former Braves executive, current Royals GM Dayton Moore, swooped in and signed the right-hander away from Atlanta. Medlen underwent his second Tommy John surgery in March and missed the entire 2014 season as a result, but he went 15-12 with a 3.11 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in his first full season as a starter in 2013. It's uncertain when Medlen will be ready to return, but he could wind up playing a significant role in the Royals' rotation during the second half of the season.
Tue Dec 2 201418:21Kris Medlen: (Elbow) Non-Tendered By Braves
The Braves declined to tender Medlen (elbow) a contract, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Although Medlen missed the entire 2014 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, he would have commanded at least $5.8 million in his third year of arbitration, a figure the Braves simply weren't comfortable with given the amount of time he's expected to miss in 2015. It's entirely possible the Braves will bring him back at a reduced price, as Mark Bowman of MLB.com reported earlier Tuesday that the two sides have discussed a two-year deal.
Wed Nov 5 201416:50Medlen (elbow) activated from 60-day DL
Medlen (elbow) has been activated from the 60-day DL.
With the postseason coming to an end last week, all major league teams were forced to return their designated 60-day DL players to the 40-man roster. Medlen, Brandon Beachy (elbow), Cory Gearrin (elbow) and Jonny Venters (elbow) were activated by Atlanta. The 29-year-old Medlen was cleared to resume a throwing program in early September and has been adamant that he will pitch at some point in 2015, though there remains a chance the Braves could decline to offer arbitration.
Tue Sep 2 201411:21Medlen (elbow) began light throwing Tuesday
Medlen (elbow) began light throwing Tuesday, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Medlen resumed throwing Tuesday just under six months removed from undergoing his second Tommy John surgery. He still has a ways to go in his recovery, but his rehab is under way, and he noted that he felt great following Tuesday's session.
Sat Aug 16 201412:26Medlen (elbow) expected to resume throwing in two and half weeks
Medlen (elbow) is expected to resume throwing in two and a half weeks, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Now close to five months removed from his second career Tommy John surgery, Medlen's spirits are high as he counts the days until he's cleared to pick up a baseball again. The right-hander said there's no doubt in his mind he'll be back at some point next season, but the question is whether it will be with the Braves, as there's a chance the team could non-tender him.
Fri Mar 28 201408:41Kris Medlen (elbow) placed on disabled list
Braves transferred RHP Kris Medlen from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Medlen, of course, underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this month. He'll obviously miss the 2014 season but should make it back early on in 2015.

Mon Mar 17 201418:18Medlen to undergo Tommy John surgery Tues.
Kris Medlen is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday on his right elbow.
It was an inevitable outcome for the 28-year-old right-hander, who had his first Tommy John procedure in August 2010 and is now facing another 12-month recovery period. Medlen will not pitch at all in 2014 and might have to miss the early part of the 2015 campaign as well. The Braves have been hit with multiple haymakers this spring.

Fri Mar 14 201411:16Kris Medlen (elbow) to visit Dr. Andrews
Kris Medlen (elbow) will visit Dr. James Andrews on Monday.
Medlen is pretty much resigned to the fact that he'll need Tommy John surgery, but he won't make a final decision until after he meets with Dr. Andrews. It would be the right-hander's second Tommy John procedure.

Wed Mar 12 201411:11Medlen to undergo second opinion, TJ likely
Kris Medlen will undergo at least one more evaluation before undergoing Tommy John surgery.
The Braves' medical staff is out of town at a convention, which has delayed the process. Medlen told the media that he knew he needed Tommy John surgery as soon as his final pitch Sunday left his hand. His Tuesday stress X-ray essentially indicated the same thing.

Wed Mar 12 201410:45SP Medlen: I'm preparing for Tommy John
Kris Medlen told the media Wednesday morning that he's spent the past couple days preparing himself to undergo a second Tommy John surgery.
The Braves have done the same, importing veteran starter Ervin Santana on Wednesday. "Nothing official yet but he has accepted that he's almost certainly going to need TJ surgery," reports Dave O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It's unfortunate news, but few are equipped to deal with it like Medlen, lauded for his makeup. He missed nearly all of the 2011 season while coming back from his first Tommy John surgery and returned to log a 2.47 ERA over 335 frames in 2012-2013.

Tue Mar 11 201411:37Medlen undergoes second opinion on arm
Kris Medlen is undergoing a second opinion on his right arm Tuesday morning.
Medlen's MRI on Monday disclosed ligament damage. To what extend, we aren't yet sure. Dr. James Andrews was preparing to give Medlen a second opinion, but he's been jumped in line. Braves general manager Frank Wren said Medlen will be evaluated by the vaunted practitioner later this week. "For us to put a complete diagnosis on it now would be premature," Wren said. Medlen missed nearly all of the 2011 season while coming back from Tommy John surgery and returned to log a dynamite 2.47 ERA over 335 innings the past two campaigns.

Tue Mar 11 201411:05Medlen's MRI reveals ligament 'involvement'
An MRI on Kris Medlen's right arm revealed "some involvement of the ligament."
"Involvement" is a generous reading of "damage." Dr. James Andrews is expected to examine the limb in question and proffer a second opinion. Andrews, Atlanta fans probably grimace to recall, performed Medlen's previous Tommy John surgery. Arm MRI's are notoriously difficult to read after the procedure, so the famous doctor's involvement makes sense. Medlen left his Grapefruit League appearance Sunday against the Mets after experiencing pain after a fourth-inning pitch. It's too soon to speculate on Medlen's 2014 status, but none of this is good news.

Mon Mar 10 201416:47Braves' Medlen undergoes MRI on right arm
Kris Medlen underwent a scheduled MRI on his right arm Monday afternoon.
The Braves' medical staff will review the results and should narrow down a diagnosis by Tuesday morning. Medlen left his Grapefruit League appearance Sunday against the Mets after suffering some sort of arm injury on a fourth-inning pitch. It's being called a right forearm strain for now. Medlen, 28, owns a spectacular 2.47 ERA in 335 innings since the start of the 2012 season.

Fri Jan 17 201414:15Kris Medlen, Braves meet at $5.8 million
Braves avoided arbitration with RHP Kris Medlen by agreeing to a one-year, $5.8 million contract.
It was Medlen's first year of arbitration eligibility. The right-hander put together a 3.11 ERA across 197 innings for the Braves last season and will again be counted on to help lead their rotation in 2014.

Sun Oct 6 201317:23Kris Medlen would start Game 5 if necessary
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez confirmed Sunday that Kris Medlen would draw the start in Game 5 of the NLDS if necessary.
Medlen was knocked around a bit in Game 1, but was the Braves most dominant starter heading into the postseason, and still owns the confidence of his manager. His opposition in that pivotal game could be either Clayton Kershaw or Zack Greinke depending on how the rest of the series develops.

Fri Oct 4 201300:19Kris Medlen knocked around by Dodgers
Kris Medlen was charged with five runs on nine hits and a walk over four frames in Thursday's loss to the Dodgers.
Medlen didn't get any help from his defense in the Dodgers' two-run second inning, but that doesn't excuse the poor effort from the right-hander. Of course, against Clayton Kershaw, it might not have mattered if Medlen was really on his game. The Braves' right-hander is lined up to face Kershaw again in Game 5 should the series advance that far.
