Fri Aug 7 202008:29Marlins' 6-1 start is reminiscent of the 1899 Perfectos
Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly was talking about this week’s doubleheader sweep at Baltimore that involved a parade of relievers, including several newcomers rescued from unemployment, and after naming three of them he drew a blank. “I’ve got to remember who all we used,” Mattingly said. “Who else pitched today? I don’t know.”For the Marlins, this season has been a bit of a blur. It was halted for eight days because of a coronavirus outbreak that sidelined more than half the team, and even now, four games into the resumption of play, there's cause for eye-rubbing.The Marlins are in first place in August, a first for the franchise. In fact, at 6-1 they have the best record in baseball, staging a one-year turnaround not seen since the 1899 St. Louis Perfectos.“I’m going to have to write a book after this,” Mattingly said. “You get tested, and you persevere.” Following a decade of sub-.500 seasons, the Marlins reported for spring training with something close to a swagger in Year 3 of... Mon Aug 3 202023:58Marlins' Jeter blames outbreak on 'false sense of security'
MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter says his players let up and paid a price.Jeter blames the team's COVID-19 outbreak on a collective false sense of security that made the Marlins lax about social distancing and wearing masks."The entire traveling party got a little too comfortable,” Jeter said Monday.Infected were 21 members of the traveling party, including at least 18 players. None is seriously ill, Jeter said, and he expects all to return this season. With more than half the team sidelined, Jeter said the Marlins still can be competitive when their season resumes Tuesday at Baltimore after a hiatus of more than a week.Following an MLB investigation, Jeter said, it's impossible to know where the first Marlins player became infected or how the coronavirus reached the clubhouse. The team didn't have a single case of COVID-19 during three weeks of summer camp and left South Florida to play two exhibition games in Atlanta.Miami then opened the season with a three-game series in Philadelphia,... Wed Mar 11 202017:11Marlins' Villar trying to get comfortable in center field
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Miami manager Don Mattingly believes Jonathan Villar's move to center field is progressing nicely.Villar isn't so sure.“Hopefully I will be more comfortable when we start that first day,” Villar said.An offseason trade brought Villar, a second baseman last season, from Baltimore to Miami. A perceived glut of middle infielders prompted the Marlins to try to convert the athletic Villar into an outfielder.“We feel good about it,” Mattingly said. Villar has only played center field eight times during his seven-year career, most recently in 2017 with Milwaukee. He's primarily been a middle infielder, but also has major league experience at third base and left field.Miguel Rojas is entrenched at shortstop and the Marlins expect prospect Isan Diaz to make the full-time transition to the majors this season.Villar arrived at Marlins camp four days early to begin working on outfield drills with first base/outfielders coach Billy Hatcher. Mattingly sees improvement on Villar's... [More]
Fri Mar 6 202012:30Brewers sign long-term deal with ex-NL MVP Christian Yelich
PHOENIX (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have reached a deal Christian Yelich that will keep the former National League Most Valuable Player in their lineup for several more years.Brewers general manager David Stearns announced Friday the team has signed Yelich to a nine-year contract running through the 2028 season with a mutual option for 2029. Terms weren't disclosed. The Athletic first reported that the Brewers and Yelich were closing in on a deal.“I could not be happier that I am a Milwaukee Brewer for the next decade,” Yelich said in a statement. “I want to thank the Brewers organization, my teammates, and the best fans in baseball for their support. I am excited to be staying in Milwaukee and playing the game that I love for this amazing city.”The 28-year-old outfielder had two years plus a club option remaining on the seven-year, $49.5 million contract he signed in March 2015, when he was still with the Miami Marlins. He was due to make $12.5 million this season and $14 million next... [More]
Sat Feb 22 202017:14Mets' Porcello gets started learning aggressive NL foes
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — New York Mets pitcher Rick Porcello made his first pitch to be part of the club’s starting rotation Saturday, but the Miami Marlins stole a bit of his thunder.Porcello pitched one inning and allowed two hits in the Mets’ spring training opener, allowing one run when Miami’s Monte Harrison swiped a pair of bases and scored on a bloop single. The Mets lost 5-3, dropping their first game in newly-renovated Clover Park, which has undergone a $57 million facelift that began last year. Porcello pitched 11 seasons in the American League for the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox before inking a $10 million, one-year deal with the Mets. He's never pitched in the National League and expects a learning curve — something the Marlins gave him with aggressive baserunning during his 17-pitch outing.“Get out there first pitch with a runner on first (base), and he’s gone," Porcello said. "I’ll start paying attention to that more and be prepared more for a change in style of play.”After... [More]
Tue Feb 18 202013:09Versatile Villar to get tryout in center field with Marlins
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Versatile newcomer Jonathan Villar is expected to be an ironman in the Miami Marlins' lineup, even if they don’t know where.Villar played in all 162 games last year for the Baltimore Orioles, mostly at second base and shortstop. But the Marlins will give him a spring training tryout in center field because they have little experience there.“I’m coming here to help the team,” Villar said. “They want me to play center field, so I’ll try. If I can play another position I’ll do it.”Villar's seven-year career has included eight games in center field, most recently in 2017 with the Milwaukee Brewers. He has been mostly a middle infielder but has also played third base and left field.“We’re going to mess around with center field and see if that’s a position he can handle,” manager Don Mattingly said. “You look at Jonathan and really feel he’s the best athlete on the field. So we’re going to give it a shot. We think he fits there with our club and our pieces, and it would be... [More]
Mon Mar 4 201914:28Jeter's mentor Denbo tries to help lead Marlins turnaround
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — There were a few whiffs before Gary Denbo and Derek Jeter really connected. The friendship dates to 1992, when Denbo was managing the Class A Gulf Coast League Yankees in Tampa, and an 18-year-old Jeter showed up for his anticipated professional debut. It went badly."A really rough day at the plate," Denbo recalls with a chuckle.Jeter was unfazed."The next day," Denbo says, "he came out with a smile and was the first one in the batting cage, like he was the most confident human on the face of the earth. And he did that for the next 20 years."A bond between the two Yankees soon formed as Denbo became Jeter's mentor. Now they have changed teams and returned to Florida, where they're trying to lead the Miami Marlins out of the baseball wilderness.Shortly after Jeter's ownership group bought the Marlins in late 2017, he hired Denbo to become vice president of scouting and player development. Denbo had spent 23 years with the Yankees in three stints, and in 2015-17 he oversaw... [More]
Thu Jul 30 201516:34Harrison underwent successful surgery on left leg Thursday
Harrison underwent successful surgery on his left leg Thursday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Harrison is facing a recovery period of six months, but he is expected to be ready for the beginning of spring training. He posted a .493 OPS in 46 games with High-A Wisconsin this season, but an .884 OPS in 28 games with rookie-league Helena. Harrison's 2015 season is over, but fortunately for the Brewers and Harrison, he will be just 20 years old when next season begins.
