Tue Mar 5 201917:45Tigers send top draft pick Mize to minor league camp
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire was impressed with Casey Mize's brief stint with the major leaguers."The kid was awesome. He had a ball here," Gardenhire said. "Having him pitch yesterday and seeing him out there was impressive."Mize, the No. 1 selection in last year's draft, was assigned to minor league camp by the Tigers on Tuesday. He gave Detroit fans a glimpse of his possible future on Monday, when he pitched two innings against St. Louis. Mize struck out the first two batters of a 1-2-3 seventh, then allowed a run in the eighth after walking two.Mize went 10-6 with a 3.30 ERA in 17 starts at Auburn last year . He made four starts in the minors across the Rookie and Class A levels.Last month, Mize pitched two innings for the Tigers in a game against Southeastern University, allowing three hits and a run and striking out two. Mon Mar 4 201918:39Fulmer feeling healthy, hopes to rebound from tough 2018
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — When Michael Fulmer arrived in the major leagues in 2016, his impact was impressive and immediate. Now, the Detroit right-hander will settle for steady progress.Three years after that sparkling debut season, Fulmer is at a bit of a crossroads. He won AL Rookie of the Year honors in 2016 but has struggled to return to that form, especially last year, when he went 3-12 with a 4.69 ERA. His 2018 season ended a bit early because of knee problems, and Fulmer — who turns 26 this month — has been working on some mechanical adjustments in response to his injuries."I think last year, performance-wise, I wasn't a hundred percent all the way through the season, and I think it showed," he said Monday. "This year, we're trying to kind of redo everything and get to be pain free, which I am. I'm blessed for that, and I think everything else will kind of build up."Fulmer pitched three innings in Monday's 9-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Kolten Wong led off with a home run... Fri Aug 14 201510:45Lugo 7-15 with RBI, run, and stolen base in first four games wit...
Lugo is 7-for-15 with an RBI, run, and stolen base in his first four games with Low-A Kane County following his trade to the Diamondbacks.
That's a nice first impression to give your new organization. Lugo struggled at High-A in the Jays' system earlier in the year (just a .219/.258/.292 batting line), but he has faired well at Low-A with both Toronto and Arizona this year. Lugo is probably a fringe prospect, but he is still just 20 years old with time on his side to develop further.
