NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Cervelli caught on with a playoff contender, just as he hoped. The first-place Atlanta Braves signed Cervelli to a one-year contract Saturday and immediately plugged the veteran catcher into the starting lineup against the New York Mets. After recovering from his latest concussion, it was his first game in the majors since May 25."The only way he's going to get to know these guys is to catch 'em," Braves manager Brian Snitker said.About two hours before the game, Cervelli said he was still waiting for his catching equipment to arrive at Citi Field. But on the second pitch he saw in his first at-bat, he laced a two-run double into the left field corner for a 2-0 lead. He added a sharp single his next time up.Cervelli, who has a long history of concussions, was granted his release Thursday by the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates after telling them he wanted to hook on with a big league team that had playing time to offer and a chance to reach the postseason. He gives... [More]

Terry Francona took one look at Cleveland's all-black uniforms and turned into a fashionista. His review? Not good."What's the slogan, 'Let the kids play'?" the Indians manager said. "Let the grown-ups look like morons."That was a common view across the majors and social media on Players' Weekend, when big leaguers wore uniforms designed to be fresh and fun, complete with nicknames on the back. But rather than a hit, the monochromatic schemes were mostly rated a big swing and miss."It's not our proudest moment rockin' these all-white milkmen jerseys," Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Saturday.Asked if he could compare them to anything he's worn before, Roberts said: "It was probably an ugly sweater over the holidays."New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone initially liked the concept. Then reality hit."When I put the uniform on I felt a little silly," he said. "I'm sure I would have felt that way if I had the white one on, too."The Dodgers and Yankees traditionally wear two of... OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Pablo Sandoval grew teary at the thought he may never make another play for retiring manager Bruce Bochy, a "father figure" to the third baseman who resurrected his career during a second stint in San Francisco.Perhaps there's still a chance of another swing or two — if both man have their way, if Sandoval's ailing arm can handle it."He's like my dad, he always wants the best for me and he always cares about me. If he wants me to go out there and play I'll take one more at-bat for him," Sandoval said. "It's hard. He's one of the greatest managers I've ever played (for). Not being around playing the last few weeks of his career, it's tough, but thank God he gave me the opportunity to play nine years for him and do everything I can for him on the field and off the field. Being part of those three World Series is the most important thing we did together."Sandoval will undergo season-ending Tommy John reconstructive surgery on his right elbow. CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland third baseman Jose Ramirez has been removed from the Indians' game against Kansas City with a right wrist injury.A team spokesman said Ramirez left Saturday's game in the first inning because of "discomfort."With two outs, Ramirez fouled off a 2-0 pitch from right-hander Glenn Sparkman and immediately bent over in pain. The 26-year-old was examined by head athletic trainer James Quinlan before walking off the field. Mike Freeman completed the at-bat and walked.Ramirez is batting .254 with 20 homers and 75 RBIs in 126 games.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval will undergo season-ending Tommy John reconstructive surgery on his right elbow, and he became emotional at the thought of not playing again for retiring manager Bruce Bochy.Sandoval will undergo surgery the first week of September in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who evaluated the 2012 World Series MVP on Wednesday and determined he needed the procedure on his ulnar collateral ligament. The 33-year-old Sandoval resurrected his career during a second stint with the Giants, used in various roles by Bochy. Sandoval, on the injured list retroactive to Aug. 11 with inflammation in the elbow, was batting .269 with 14 homers and 41 RBIs in 107 games. While Sandoval is set to become a free agent, San Francisco athletic trainer Dave Groeschner said the club's longtime strong relationship with Sandoval makes it a case in which the Giants will monitor Sandoval's progress and get him set up with physical therapists in the Miami area where he spends the offseason. If Sandoval can somehow do it, Bochy would like to get him one more at-bat before the surgery — and Sandoval smiled at the idea, then fought tears as he discussed Bochy's influence as a "father figure."___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

NEW YORK (AP) — The first-place Atlanta Braves have signed catcher Francisco Cervelli and immediately plugged him into the starting lineup against the New York Mets.Cervelli, who has a history of concussions, was recently granted his release by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He gives the NL East leaders a veteran replacement for injured catcher Brian McCann, who is sidelined with a sprained left knee. The 33-year-old Cervelli joined the Braves on Saturday at Citi Field and was set to bat seventh against Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler. Atlanta manager Brian Snitker says Cervelli will split playing time with Tyler Flowers behind the plate and likely remain with the club when McCann returns because by then rosters will have expanded in September.Cervelli batted .193 in 34 games for the Pirates this season before getting hurt. He is a .269 career hitter with 36 home runs in 700 major league games. To make roster room for Cervelli, the Braves optioned catcher Alex Jackson to Triple-A Gwinnett and transferred left-hander Grant Dayton to the 60-day injured list.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
