OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Matt Shoemaker had to choke back tears after tests revealed a torn ACL in his left knee Sunday, cutting short yet another promising season for Toronto's oft-injured right-hander.Standing in the clubhouse following a 5-4 win over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, Shoemaker's voice quavered and he paused a few times while discussing the injury. At one point he was asked if he needed time to compose himself but declined."You can't put words to it," Shoemaker said. "Extremely frustrated but at the same time I just have to stay positive. I know I'm really upset right now, I just got the news. But stay positive, keep fighting, get this thing right and be back when it's ready to go."Shoemaker was hurt at the end of a rundown Saturday, and Toronto announced the diagnosis and placed him on the 10-day injured list a day later. He will undergo surgery but no date has been set.The 32-year-old is 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA in five starts after signing a $3.5 million, one-year deal with... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge won't be back with the New York Yankees anytime soon, a further blow to an injury-decimated team with a mediocre record 3½ weeks into the season.New York's biggest offensive threat and the heart of its clubhouse went on the injured list for the third time in four seasons Sunday, a day after straining the oblique muscle on the left side of his abdomen while hitting a sixth-inning single against Kansas City."Especially tough times like this, when a lot of guys are beat up, I wanted to be out there in the trenches with the guys every single day," Judge said after Sunday's 7-6, 10-inning win over Kansas City .Manager Aaron Boone called it a "pretty significant strain in there" and would not estimate a return date. Judge broke his right wrist when hit by a pitch by the Royals' Jakob Junis last July 26, and while Boone originally projected a return in three weeks, Judge did not rejoin the Yankees until Sept. 14."There's no need to put a time, a clock on it, because... NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge has a "pretty significant strain" of his left oblique, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, and it will be several weeks before New York can even estimate when the slugger will return.Boone said Sunday that Judge will need to rest and allow the injury to heal. Judge was hurt Saturday while swinging at a pitch against Kansas City.He became the Yankees' 13th player on the disabled list and the 14th overall this season, joining Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks, Gary Sánchez, Didi Gregorius, Miguel Andújar and Greg Bird. Those six and Judge accounted for 175 of the team's record 267 homers last year and 515 of the 821 RBIs.Judge sustained a season-ending right oblique strain while fouling off a pitch against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sept. 13, 2016.Infielder Thairo Estrada, the only remaining healthy position player on the 40-man roster, was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Estrada, recovered from a February 2018 gunshot wound sustained in Venezuela, would make his major league debut.Sánchez, out since April 10 with a strained left calf, is scheduled to play a rehabilitation game Monday with Class A Charleston and could be activated before Wednesday's game at the Los Angeles Angels.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

NEW YORK (AP) — When Tim Anderson spiked his bat and yelled toward his White Sox teammates, Major League Baseball's self-described "spicy" Twitter account was among the first to weigh in."LET THE KIDS PLAY," proclaimed @Cut4 , the offbeat arm of MLB's social media portfolio with nearly 1 million followers. The tweet Wednesday included video of Anderson's bat toss, and it sparked hundreds of comments — some cheering the fiery display, some condemning it.Baseball is stuck in an ongoing debate regarding on-field decorum, and MLB's marketing department is leaving no doubt where it stands. Since the group was restructured just over a year ago, MLB's promotional efforts have taken up arms against the old school. While traditionalists want to punish unabashed revelry with fastballs to the backside, MLB senior vice president of marketing Barbara McHugh wants her team feting those bat flips."That's certainly what we're trying to celebrate," McHugh told The Associated Press on Wednesday, hours before... CLEVELAND (AP) — Francisco Lindor missed all the little moments. The big ones, too."Every pitch. Every out. Every celebration after every win," the Cleveland Indians' All-Star shortstop said. "It was everything equally."Sidelined for the season's first 18 games, Lindor was activated from the injured list Saturday before a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves. Lindor had been out since spraining his left ankle while running the bases near the end of spring training as he was rehabbing a right calf sprain. For the 25-year-old, the time away from his teammates and a season's subtle moments was difficult."Missing the flights. Missing getting to a hotel, getting your room key and figuring out what you're going to eat," he said. "I missed that. I miss my teammates. I miss the game. I miss the things within the game. It's an honor. It's a privilege to be healthy. It's a blessing, and I ain't taking it for granted. I used to take health for granted. Not no more."Lindor did not play in Cleveland's... [More]
