RHP Josh Smith will get the start Friday night when Cincinnati starts its last series of the season at home against the Cubs. Smith last started on Sept. 20 against Chicago, pitching three innings and giving up a run in a 6-1 defeat. Smith, who has come out of the bullpen in 30 of his 31 outings this year, is 0-2 with a 5.25 ERA in four career outings against Chicago.

RHP Josh Smith (3-2) took the loss after allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out three in a three-inning outing at Wrigley Field. The start was his first since Oct. 4, 2015, at Pittsburgh. He became the 15th different starting pitcher used by the Reds this season, two shy of the club single-season mark set in 2003. RHP Josh Smith was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday for his second stint this season with the Reds. Smith made 25 relief appearances for Cincinnati from May 22 to Aug. 29, going 2-1 with a 5.19 ERA. In nine minor league appearances, including eight starts, Smith went 4-4 with a 3.80 ERA.

RHP Josh Smith was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Monday. Smith pitched a season-high four innings during an 11-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Manager Bryan Price said Smith would return when rosters expand Sept. 1.

RHP Josh Smith got the first win of his big league career Saturday as he retired four batters without giving up a hit. So what will happen to the baseball from his first win? "I will probably give it to my dad. He already texted me and said he wants it," said former starter Smith (1-1), standing by his locker after a game that lasted three hours and 35 minutes. "I was trying to do more than I was capable of" last year. Tucker Barnhart had an RBI single -- his third hit of the game -- to break a tie in the top of the 10th inning as the Cincinnati Reds scored five times in the extra frame to beat the National League East leaders. Washington had won six in a row but was held to three hits. "It means a lot. It is definitely a monkey off my back. It is nice to get that first one," he said. Smith got his first win in his 13th outing out of the bullpen this year. "It is huge for a guy who has had a lot of time in the minor leagues," Price said. "He has created a situation where he is a guy who can be trusted" late in games.

RHP Josh Smith had his contract purchased from Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. It is Smith's second stint with the Reds but first this season. He went 0-4 last year with a 6.89 ERA in nine appearances which includes seven starts.
