RHP Logan Verrett got a no-decision Friday but was solid. He allowed two runs, four hits and one walk in 5 2/3 innings. Verrett, who is filling in for Matt Harvey (out for the season), needs to continue to be at least solid if he hopes to keep his job. You can be sure the Mets are listening to trade offers, but Verrett could convince them to stand pat if he continues to improve.

He also hit a batter. Verrett, 0-4 with a 9.33 ERA in his four previous starts, gave up a leadoff homer to Ryan Howard in the second and a run-scoring groundout to Cody Asche in the fifth, but managed to avoid further trouble despite the fact that the Phillies put seven baserunners aboard in his last three innings of work. "That's exactly what we wanted," Collins said. "I thought he pitched good. He gave us a chance to win."

Colon is expected to make his next start as scheduled Sunday, but Verrett will provide an extra arm for an overworked bullpen as well as insurance in case Colon has a setback. Verrett opened the season with the Mets and went 3-4 with a 4.02 ERA in 19 games, including four starts. Verrett tossed six shutout frames on April 13 and April 19 in place of RHP Jacob deGrom, who was battling a lat injury and tending to his newborn son. In addition, Verrett is the first Mets pitcher to win games on consecutive days since RHP Joe Smith did it Sept. 9-10, 2008. Verrett is 3-0 with a 0.55 ERA in six games overall this season.

RHP Logan Verrett pitched six shutout innings to beat Philadelphia on Tuesday night, allowing six hits while striking out four and walking one. Verrett, filling the spot in the rotation normally occupied by Jacob deGrom, also blanked Miami over six innings last Wednesday, but settled for a no-decision. "I didn't feel as sharp as I did in my last start, so I really had to work for it today," Verrett said. "Early on I was trying to overthrow a little bit with my fastball, trying to get a little bit too much on top of it. Then a little bit later in the game, after the first couple innings, we started throwing some sliders in there. That was really (helping) me find my arm slot with the fastball and my other pitches, so after that I really felt good." The Phillies bailed him out with a base-running error in the first inning, and Verrett worked out of a two-one, one-out jam in the second. He also contributed his first major league hit, a fifth-inning double.
