TORONTO (AP) — Luke Maile hit two home runs, including a two-run shot in the 12th inning that gave the Toronto Blue Jays a 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.Maile's drive off Boston's Brian Johnson (1-2) improved the Blue Jays to 5-0 in extra innings after they overcame an impressive outing by Red Sox starter Chris Sale.Curtis Granderson walked to begin the 12th before Maile went deep to right. Magill (elbow) was released by the Reds on Sunday.

Magill, who underwent Tommy John surgery in early-May, was the victim of a lack of available spots on the 40-man roster. The Reds needed some bullpen help, and the right-hander was a casualty of the ensuing shakeup. He'll look to catch on elsewhere, but considering the recent procedure, it will likely be on a low-risk deal.

Magill (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Friday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Magill was initially believed to be making progress with his elbow, but it appears he lost the battle and will require the season-ending procedure. If all goes well, he should be able to return at some point in 2016.

Magill had been shut down with elbow inflammation but now has been throwing simulated games at the Reds spring training facility.

If all goes well he'll start pitching for Triple-A Louisville.

The Dodgers traded Magill to the Reds on Tuesday in exchange for outfielder Chris Heisey, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports.

Magill took a massive step back at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2014, posting a 5.21 ERA and 1.64 WHIP over 84.2 innings, but he has averaged close to a strikeout per inning in his seven minor league seasons (8.9 K/9). Further, he's still just 25, and Heisey was likely to get upwards of $2.5 million in his second year of arbitration, an unappealing number for a cash-strapped team, so the trade makes a good deal of sense for both sides.

Magill has moved into a bullpen role with Triple-A Albuquerque.

This suggests that the Dodgers don't view him as a big league starter any more, which he probably isn't. Magill since the end of May has an 18:14 K:BB in 21 innings, so he still has plenty of work to do to get back to the big leagues.

No surprises here. Magill made six starts for the Dodgers last year, posting a 6.51 ERA, but he struck out a batter per inning and boasts big strikeout numbers in the minors. He could get a shot at some point this season if the big club needs a rotation reinforcement.

Magill might have gotten another spot start Sunday if he was healthy. Instead, the Dodgers are going with Chris Capuano on short rest. It's not clear how long Magill will be sidelined.

The Dodgers need a spot starter after Wednesday's doubleheader. Magill was pulled from Wednesday's start at Triple-A Albuquerque after two innings and is on the 40-man roster, so he's likely the favorite to get the ball. Palmer is also an option, though, despite not being on the 40-man. Neither should be considered for fantasy purposes.
