RHP Kevin Quackenbush was recalled from Triple-A El Paso. He made the club's Opening Day roster before being optioned out on May 24. Quackenbush (2-2) will worked 1 1/3 innings in Saturday's win over the Rockies. "I never had any doubts he can handle big situations," manager Andy Green said.

RHP Kevin Quackenbush was the sacrificial reliever when the Padres needed a roster spot in order to activate Tuesday's starting pitcher, RHP Andrew Cashner, from the disabled list. So Quackenbush, despite leading the Padres with 24 appearances, was sent to Triple-A El Paso. The demotion certainly was not results-based. Quackenbush had not allowed a run in his last three outings, giving up just two hits in 3 1/3 innings.

RHP Kevin Quackenbush was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday when the Padres activated RHP Andrew Cashner off the disabled list. Quackenbush was 2-2 with a 4.64 ERA in 24 appearances for San Diego this year.

RHP Kevin Quackenbush quickly surrendered leads both Saturday and Sunday as the Padres' first reliever out of the bullpen. Quackenbush, who entered Sunday's game with a two-run lead, gave up back-to-back homers to the only two hitters he faced, Cardinals INFs Jedd Gyorko and Aledmys Diaz. He has allowed nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits, including three homers, and four walks over six innings in his last six appearances to see his ERA skyrocket from 0.00 to 7.71.

RHP Kevin Quackenbush allowed two runs in 1/3 of an inning out of the bullpen Tuesday in Philadelphia, the worst outing by San Diego's relievers since the Dodgers piled up seven runs against them on Opening Day. In between they pitched to a 2.38 ERA in 22 2/3 innings of work.

Quackenbush was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

The Padres made a series of moves Wednesday afternoon, and Quackenbush will join the big league club to take the spot of Nick Vincent, who was optioned to Triple-A. It will be Quackenbush's second stint with San Diego this season. In 19 appearances, he holds a 1-1 record and 3.10 ERA.

Quackenbush was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.

Quackenbush has a 3.10 ERA, but his K-rate is down from 25.2 percent in 2014 to 20 percent this season, and his walk rate is slightly up. The move was necessary to make room on the 25-man roster with Wil Myers getting activated. Look for Quackenbush to rejoin the Padres' bullpen at some point later this season.

Quackenbush was dealt the loss Monday night against the Angels after allowing two baserunners in the ninth inning while recording only one out.

Quackenbush entered the game in the top of the frame with the score knotted at 3-3, but after inducing a lineout of Carlos Perez, he allowed the two runners to reach base before getting pulled by manager Bud Black. Closer Craig Kimbrel was called upon to extinguish the threat, but he ended up loading the bases before Albert Pujols delivered a walk-off RBI single to give the Angels the win. Monday's poor showing aside, Quackenbush has been mostly reliable in a setup role this season, posting a 2.45 ERA while striking out 14 batters in 14.2 innings.

Quackenbush was recalled from Triple-A on Friday, Padres announcer Bob Scanlan reports.

He was dominant in six innings at Triple-A, posting a 1.50 ERA with nine strikeouts and just one walk. With Craig Kimbrel and Joaquin Benoit at the back of the Padres' bullpen, Quackenbush will just be useful for his strikeouts and ratios.

Quackenbush was sent to Triple-A Tucscon, MLB.com reports.

Quackenbush and Brandon Maurer were sent to Triple-A after the Padres traded for Craig Kimbrel.

Quackenbush has made four appearances this spring, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out four over four innings of work.

Quackenbush remains a candidate for the set-up role in the Padres' bullpen, but Shawn Kelley is also in the mix. However, while Quackenbush has yet to allow a run, Kelley is carrying a 5.79 ERA over 4.2 innings of work this spring.

Quackenbush will be competing with recently acquired Brandon Maurer and Shawn Kelley for the set-up role in San Diego's bullpen, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports.

According to Brock's report, Quackenbush won't "simply be handed a job" in spring training. As a rookie last year, Quackenbush earned six saves in Joaquin Benoit's absence toward the end of the season and finished the year with a 2.48 ERA and 56 punch outs over 54.3 innings. Still, Kelley and Maurer represent two more hurdles for Quackenbush to overcome if he wants to secure the setup role. This will be a competition to keep a close eye on over the course of spring training.

Quackenbush earned his sixth save of the season Monday, throwing a scoreless ninth inning against the Rockies.

Even with Benoit returning to the Padres staff over the weekend, Quackenbush remains the closer. The 25-year-old has performed well in the ninth inning role and owns a 2.63 ERA with a 1.09 overall in 2014.

Quackenbush picked up his fifth save of the season, as he gave up two hits in the ninth while striking out one in a 3-2 win over the Giants on Saturday.

Quackenbush came on in the ninth with a runner on first and gave up two hits which allowed him to score. He wasn't charged with the run, but the fill-in closer was close to blowing the save, as he allowed runners on first and third before getting Brandon Crawford to fly out for the final out.

Quackenbush picked up his fourth save of the year Tuesday, despite giving up a run on one hit and one walk. He also struck out a batter in his lone inning.

Replacing the injured Joaquin Benoit, Quackenbush has filled in admirably at closer and owns a solid 2.68 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 53:18 K:BB in 50.1 innings. Quackenbush will likely return to setup duties once Benoit returns to action, likely over the weekend.

Quackenbush came on in the ninth inning against the Diamondbacks on Friday to pick up his third save of the season.

Normally a middle reliever, Quackenbush has pitched very well for the Padres. He'll continue to get looks at the closer spot until Joaquin Benoit is ready to return.

Quackenbush allowed one run on two hits, while striking out two in one inning of work in a non-save situation on Tuesday.

With Joaquin Benoit still sidelined, Quackenbush is still in line for save chances for the Padres these days. Although he had a hiccup Tuesday, he still has pitched admirably this year and now sports a fine 2.61 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 52:17 K:BB in 48.1 innings.

Quackenbush pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out the side, to earn his second save of the season Monday against the Diamondbacks.

With Joaquin Benoit getting shut down due to shoulder soreness, Quackenbush steps as Closer for the Padres. There is no timetable for Benoits's return, but it will be a few days at minimum.

Quackenbush is set to assume closing duties for the Padres for the time being after Joaquin Benoit was shut down due to renewed discomfort in his right shoulder, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The Padres have issued no timetable for Benoit's return, but since the closer had previously missed 11 days earlier this month due to the soreness, the Padres could choose delay his recovery even longer this time around. During Benoit's previous absence, Quackenbush stepped in to convert a save without too much aggravation, and the 25-year-old has otherwise been excellent while seeing high-leverage duty with the Padres this season. Quackenbush owns a 2.70 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and has struck out 43 batters over 43.1 innings.
