RHP Rubby De La Rosa could get one more opportunity to get in a game before season's end for the Diamondbacks if he shows more command in side sessions, Hale said. De La Rosa had been ineffective in two brief starts recently. "Right now, our thinking is just to get him back to major league command," Hale said. Longer term, Hale said the D-backs have to figure out whether he's a starter or reliever. "For us, he's a starter until his arm says it's not, that he can't handle starting anymore."

RHP Rubby De La Rosa, who lasted just over an inning Wednesday against Colorado, will not appear again this season, Arizona manager Chip Hale said. Instead De La Rosa, who worked his way back from a sprained UCL, will pitch in the bullpen and in side sessions. "It's super smart," De La Rosa said. "I just want to feel 100 percent ready to go to compete. It's not pain. It's just uncomfortable. I don't feel (like) me." RHP Braden Shipley will take De La Rosa's spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation.

RHP Rubby De La Rosa was on a roughly 60-pitch count which the Diamondbacks hoped would carry him through the first four-plus innings. Instead, De La Rosa lasted one batter into the second and needed 45 pitches to record three outs. De La Rosa allowed a leadoff home run to OF Charlie Blackmon, walked two and struck out two in the first inning. The right-hander then hit Daniel Descalso with a pitch leading off the second to end his abbreviated evening. "We're going to look at his health," Arizona manager Chip Hale said. "He didn't seem to have the same stuff and his command obviously wasn't there. I went out there and asked him and he said he felt fine."

RHP Rubby De La Rosa will be on a 60-pitch limit in his start against Colorado on Wednesday, his second start since missing 3 1/2 months with a right elbow sprain. He threw 43 pitches in two innings against San Francisco last Friday. Erstwhile starter RHP Braden Shipley is expected to piggyback with De La Rosa as he did last Friday, when he entered in the third inning and went 3 2/3 innings. The Diamondbacks hope to get De La Rosa up to 70 pitches by the end of the season.

RHP Rubby De La Rosa gave up one run, one hit and two walks in two innings in his first start since May 25 after being shut down with right elbow inflammation that did not require surgery. He was removed after throwing 43 pitches Friday, on a pitch limit after throwing 50 in his last rehab start at Class A Visalia on Monday. De La Rosa, 4-5 with a 4.11 ERA in 11 appearances before going on the disabled list, will remain in the rotation the test of the season and if he holds up will compete for a spot in the 2017 starting rotation. The bullpen next year is a lesser option. "We would like to see him start next year," manager Chip Hale said. "He is an effective starter for us. This kind of gives us a glimpse of what it would be like. We have to be able to count on him next year to be able to go out and pitch every fifth day."

RHP Rubby De La Rosa (elbow) threw a side session Monday, manager Chip Hale said, and after another side session later in the week, he will pitch an inning in a rookie-level Arizona League game, possibly Tuesday. De La Rosa was shut down in late May with elbow soreness. Surgery was not required, but he was shut down again in August when the soreness recurred. "We'll build him up with games in the minors, and then we'll have to build him up here," Hale said. The D-backs have set a 70-pitch limit on him for the rest of the year. The D-backs still consider De La Rosa a starter, and barring further setbacks expect him to enter the 2017 season as such, but Hale said there have been talks about using him out of the bullpen to protect his elbow.

De La Rosa could follow that by throwing batting practice one more time or pitching in a rookie-level Arizona League game, manager Chip Hale said. The D-backs discussed bringing De La Rosa back as a reliever, but Hale said the righty will return as a starter. "He was so good as a starter, we feel like he can get built back up to 100 pitches and help us," Hale said. De La Rosa may need four rehab starts, according to Hale.
