Mon Apr 30 201812:38Showalter strives for turnaround from last-place Orioles
BALTIMORE (AP) — The last time the Baltimore Orioles began a season this poorly, Buck Showalter was brought in to restore order to the floundering franchise. Now, Showalter finds himself in a similar mess.Back in 2010, the Orioles stumbled to a 1-11 start and were 5-18 at the end of April. They fired manager Dave Trembley in June and continued to slide under interim manager Juan Samuel before Showalter came aboard and guided Baltimore to 34 wins in its final 57 games.Showalter has since taken the Orioles to the postseason on three occasions. This year, however, he's had to deal with a team plagued by injuries, lackluster hitting and inconsistent pitching. With guys like Anthony Santander, Danny Valencia, Chance Sisco and Craig Gentry getting significant playing time, it's no wonder Baltimore (8-20) has a minus-54 run differential and is deep in last place in the AL East. That would be acceptable if the Orioles were tanking, but they fully expected to compete for a playoff spot this season.Vice... Sat Apr 7 201802:28Buck was right: Umpires say they missed call in O's-Yanks
NEW YORK (AP) — Turns out, Orioles manager Buck Showalter had it right.Crew chief Jerry Meals said umpires missed a call during a disputed rundown at third base during a game between Baltimore and the New York Yankees on Friday night."We were incorrect," Meals said. The play happened in the sixth inning with the Orioles leading 3-2 — they went on to win 7-3 in 14 innings behind Pedro Alvarez's grand slam. With runners at the corners, New York's Neil Walker hit a dribbler to pitcher Richard Bleier, who caught Giancarlo Stanton in a rundown between third and home. Gary Sanchez advanced from first to third while Stanton was hung up, and catcher Caleb Joseph eventually chased Stanton back toward third as well. That's when it got weird. Stanton ran through the base and into foul territory, giving himself up. Joseph first tagged Sanchez, then chased down Stanton, thinking he'd turned a double play. By the book, if both Sanchez and Stanton had remained on third base, Sanchez would have been called... [More]

Sat Apr 7 201800:28Still going! Orioles-Yankees heads to 14th inning
NEW YORK (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees are heading to the 14th inning tied at 3.The first 13 innings Friday night took 4 hours, 53 minutes, and included some wild misadventures on the bases. Most of the field level sections at Yankee Stadium were still about half full after midnight, though the upper levels have mostly cleared out.Yankees star catcher Gary Sanchez left in the 14th with an apparent leg injury while behind the plate.New York nearly won it in the 11th. With Didi Gregorius at third, Orioles right-hander Mychal Givens threw a breaking pitch to the backstop, enticing Gregorius to break for home. Catcher Caleb Joseph chased after the wild pitch, fielded the ball on a big hop and flipped it to Givens. The pitcher slid across home plate as he took the feed to block Gregorius and apply the tag.A video review upheld the call — just one play after a Yankees video challenge overturned what was initially ruled an inning-ending double play hit by Ronald Torreyes. It was nearly another big moment in a big week for Gregorius. He had a tying solo homer in the eighth inning off Miguel Castro that made Friday's freaky extra innings possible.Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge robbed Joseph of a home run in the 13th.

Tue Mar 13 201816:12Orioles' Joseph goes from being punchline to No. 1 catcher
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Caleb Joseph has gone from being a punchline in 2016 to being the Baltimore Orioles No. 1 catcher — at least for now.Joseph went through the entire season in 2016 — during which he had 132 at-bats — without a single RBI.He rebounded last season, driving in 28 runs, and has swung a hot bat this spring.Entering Tuesday's game at Minnesota, Joseph was batting a cool .444 (8-for-18) with a home run and 5 RBIs, and at least for now, Joseph is the Orioles' starting catcher."It's spring training. That sums it up," Joseph said. "There's been springs when you didn't get any hits. There's been springs where you've gotten a ton of hits. I wish it mattered."The 31-year-old catcher endured years of minor league ball — including five seasons at Double-A Bowie, where he set an unwanted franchise record for most games played.Joseph finally made it to the big leagues in 2014, and after sitting behind Matt Wieters and Welington Castillo, he's inherited — or earned — Baltimore's catching... Fri Feb 9 201814:33For starters, Orioles seek to fortify rotation this spring
BALTIMORE (AP) — There might come a time in the next few weeks when the Baltimore Orioles finally add a proven veteran to their stunningly thin starting rotation."There are some pitchers available, and I'm confident we'll be able to sign some between now and when we open (the regular season)," executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said recently.Until then, manager Buck Showalter can only hope to find some quality arms among a massive array of hurlers ready to show their stuff at spring training in Sarasota, Florida."We've got 35 pitchers coming to camp, more than any in the history of the Orioles," Showalter noted. "We're staying focused on the people who are here right now, trying to see if certain people can go to another level. We've got plenty of resources to do more than compete."That's the company line, although it's hard to perceive the Orioles as a contender in the AL East coming off a last-place finish and with a rotation that currently lists only Dylan Bundy... C Caleb Joseph is staying hot at the plate and gaining more playing time. Manager Buck Showalter said he wants to keep both Joseph and C Welington Castillo "in the flow" and give both time in the lineup. Joseph came through Wednesday, hitting a two-run homer his first time up as the Orioles rolled to a 6-0 victory over the Royals. "When you can put consistent swings on the ball, you can get desired results," Joseph said. He has hit in five straight games and is hitting .296 this season.
