The Cincinnati Reds surprised him by offering a $5 million, two-year deal."It all kind of happened quickly, which is weird," Hernandez said Tuesday after the deal was announced.The 32-year-old right-hander will make $2.5 million annually and can earn another $1 million each year in performance bonuses. RHP David Hernandez struck out the only batter he faced and got the victory in a 6-3 decision over the Dodgers on Tuesday, his first home game Chase Field since leaving via free agency after the 2015 season. He was acquired to bolster the bullpen from the Angels at the trade deadline. "It's a whole different feeling, going to the yard and playing for something," Hernandez said. Hernandez has not given up a hit in his three appearances over 2 1-3 innings since going Arizona. He was 1-0 with one save and a 2.23 ERA in 38 appearances with the Angels this sesaon after spending 2016 with Philadelphia. "That was a very key addition for us," manager Torey Lovullo said. "He is able to throw against right- and left-handed batters. He has weapons against both sides of the plate and that's a great luxury."

RHP David Hernandez was activated by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, one day after a trade with the Angels for RHP Luis Madero. Hernandez, 32, has gone 1-0 with one save, a 2.23 ERA with 37 strikeouts, eight walks and no home runs allowed in 38 appearances this season with the Angels, including a 1.14 ERA over his last 22 games.

He's held opponents scoreless in nine of ten appearances, and didn't allow a baserunner in his first four games. Hernandez, Jose Alvarez (stranded 12 of 14 runners), Blake Parker (26 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings) and Bud Norris (six saves) have been the backbone of a bullpen that has been totally remade since spring training because of injuries.

RHP David Hernandez worked his way out of a jam and picked up his first save of the season on Saturday night, pitching the ninth inning against the Reds as Jeanmar Gomez got a night off. It was the first save for Hernandez since July 12, 2013, when he was a member of the Diamondbacks.

RHP David Hernandez bounced back from his forgettable Opening Day appearance on Monday when he gave up three runs without recording an out in a 6-2 loss by throwing a perfect inning Wednesday. Hernandez was able to maintain the Phillies' 2-1 lead in the eighth inning. Cincinnati rallied for the win with two runs in the ninth off of Dalier Hinojosa. "I was happy that Pete had the faith in me to throw me back out into the fire," said Hernandez. "It always come back to a point where you have to bounce back. You're going to have your streaks in the bullpen, your peaks and valleys, and it's how you bounce back. I was thankful to get out there. I don't know if I could have gone another night sleeping on that performance."

RHP David Hernandez has been primarily a setup reliever during his six-year career, but he will get first crack at closing after signing a one-year, $3.9 million contact in free agency during the offseason. If he falters, the Phillies have three former closers in camp on minor leagues contracts -- RHPs Edward Mujica, Andrew Bailey and Ernesto Frieri.

RHP David Hernandez signed a one-year, $3.9 million deal with the Phillies on Wednesday. Hernandez, 30, missed the first two months of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He returned to go 1-5 with a 4.28 ERA in 40 relief appearances for the Diamondbacks.

Hernandez took the loss Wednesday, to fall to 1-4, giving up two runs on two hits with one strikeout, while recording just two outs.

Hernandez's return from Tommy John surgery has been up and down - before this outing he had gone three straight scoreless appearances. He has a 4.30 ERA and 1.43 WHIP on the season, but is still getting strikeouts with 22 in 23 innings. Hernandez is not likely to be fully back until next year.

Hernandez took the loss Sunday when he gave up a walk-off home run to Cameron Marybin in the 10th inning.

Hernandez has been mediocre since returning from Tommy john surgery on June 7, posting a 4.27 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. His strikeout and walk rates are similar to before his injury, but not back to his 2011 and 2012 levels. His biggest problem has been controlling the long ball (1.89 HR/9) and it bit him again Sunday. Hernandez seems recovered from an ankle injury he suffered Wednesday.

Hernandez (ankle) struck out the only batter he faced Saturday against the Braves.

Hernandez had been dealing with an ankle injury, but was able to return to the mound Saturday after earlier X-rays came back negative. The 30-year-old reliever will resume his regular role in the middle of the Arizona bullpen.
