Mon May 1 202312:50Paul Sewald Picks Up Another Win
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald picked up his second win of the season in the team's 10-8 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in 10 innings on Sunday. Sewald came on in the bottom of the ninth inning with the game tied and allowed one hit, no runs and a walk in his inning of work to send the game into extra innings. Matt Brash entered in the bottom of the 10th inning in Toronto to secure his first save of the season. After Sunday's outing, Sewald has a 3.00 ERA (3.39 FIP), 0.87 WHIP, seven saves, four walks and 19 strikeouts in 15 innings over 15 relief appearances. The 32-year-old right-handed veteran has picked up where he left off in 2022 and holds plenty of fantasy value as Seattle's primary closer right now.

Wed Apr 26 202301:01Paul Sewald Racks Up Seventh Save Tuesday
It wasn't the cleanest, but Seattle Mariners closer Paul Sewald picked up his seventh save of the season in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Phillies. Sewald came in to close things out up by three. He allowed a leadoff double, got the first out on a groundout while the runner advanced to third, got the second out on a strikeout, allowed a run to score on a single, and ended the game with another strikeout. The 32-year-old has been solid to start the season, compiling a 3.46 ERA with an 11.77 K/9 rate. Only three other closers currently have more saves than Sewald; he should continue to be in fantasy managers' lineups as long as he continues to pitch as he has.

Sat Apr 15 202311:35Paul Sewald Earns Friday's Save
Seattle Mariners right-hander Paul Sewald threw a perfect ninth inning Friday to earn the save of the 5-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies. He struck out two, and the save was his third of the season. Sewald's posted a 3.38 ERA, 25.0% strikeout rate, and 1.00 WHIP over eight innings so far in 2023. It's after the 32-year-old pitched to a 2.67 ERA and 29.8% strikeout rate with a 0.77 WHIP last season. Sewald looks like the closer in Seattle right now, but it could change into a committee when Andres Munoz, who has one save to his name, returns from the injured list. Either way, he should provide fantasy owners with close to 20 saves this year.

Fri Mar 31 202316:39Paul Sewald Picks Up Win On Opening Day
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald picked up his first win of the season on Opening Day on Thursday night in the 3-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians. Sewald worked a perfect eighth inning and struck out one, while Andres Munoz got the save after giving up two hits in a scoreless ninth inning. The 32-year-old picked up the hold, but fantasy managers that drafted him for saves should be disappointed. He had a career-high 20 saves last year and should be in the mix for saves again in 2023, but Munoz could be a thorn in his side all year in the ninth inning. It's something to keep an eye on in the early portions of this season.

Wed Feb 1 202318:42Paul Sewald Should Be Ready For Spring Training
Seattle Mariners closer Paul Sewald (elbow, heel) has resumed throwing and should be ready to pitch in spring training games. Sewald had surgeries on his right elbow and his heel in the offseason. The 32-year-old could be eased into spring training action, but relievers typically don't need a ton of work before the regular season. He had a team-high 20 saves last season and will enter Opening Day as Seattle's primary closer yet again, giving him plenty of value in fantasy leagues on an improved Mariners team. Sewald could have a short leash if he falters, though, and Andres Munoz and Diego Castillo are plenty capable of handling ninth-inning duties as well. Sewald had a career-best 2.67 ERA (3.88 FIP), 0.77 WHIP, 20 saves and 72 strikeouts in 64 relief innings last year.

Wed Jan 25 202320:07Paul Sewald, Andres Munoz May Get Late Start This Spring
Seattle Mariners relief pitchers Paul Sewald (elbow, heel) and Andres Munoz (foot), who both had surgeries this offseason, might not see much action early in spring training. However, relievers don't usually need much work in the spring to get ready, and they should both be fine for Opening Day. Both pitchers are a big part of the back end of Seattle's bullpen heading into 2023, with Sewald currently slated to enter the year as the primary closer. Sewald was great in his second year with the M's, posting a career-best 2.67 ERA (3.88 FIP), career-high 20 saves, 0.77 WHIP and 72 strikeouts in 64 relief innings. Munoz was just as good with a 2.49 ERA (2.04 FIP), four saves, 0.89 WHIP and 96 K's in 65 innings out of the bullpen.

Fri Jan 13 202315:22Paul Sewald Avoids Arbitration Friday
The Seattle Mariners and relief pitcher Paul Sewald avoided salary arbitration on Friday be agreeing to a one-year, $4.1 million deal. Sewald had the best year of his career in his second season in Seattle in 2022, posting a career-low 2.67 ERA (3.88 FIP), career-low 0.77 WHIP, career-high 20 saves and 29.8 percent strikeout rate in 64 innings over 65 relief appearances. He did have surgery on both his elbow and heel in December, but he is expected to be ready for the start of spring training. The 32-year-old veteran should open the 2023 campaign as the favorite in Seattle for saves, but if he falters at all, the M's have some other pretty good ninth-inning options in Andres Munoz and Diego Castillo.

Wed Aug 10 202221:43Paul Sewald Secures 15th Save On Wednesday
Seattle Mariners pitcher Paul Sewald struck out one over a scoreless inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the New York Yankees. He entered the game in the ninth inning to protect a one-run lead. The 32-year-old tossed a perfect inning to earn his 15th save of the season. He has been terrific this season, posting a 2.31 ERA, 0.64 WHIP, and 51 strikeouts across 46 2/3 innings in 2022. Sewald is Seattle's primary closer, and fantasy managers should continue to roll with him in all leagues.

Wed Jul 13 202222:16Paul Sewald Secures 12th Save On Wednesday
Seattle Mariners pitcher Paul Sewald allowed one run on two hits while striking out three across an inning to earn the save during Game 2 of Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Washington Nationals. He also picked up the save in Game 1 of Wednesday's 6-4 win by recording the final out in the ninth inning. The 32-year-old picked up two saves in Wednesday's doubleheader and has 12 on the season. He is locked in as Seattle's primary closer, posting a 2.60 ERA, 0.72 WHIP, and 41 strikeouts over 34 2/3 innings. Sewald should be rostered in all leagues and will continue to handle ninth-inning duties for Seattle while he's pitching well.

Sat Jun 4 202209:26Paul Sewald Locks Down His Third Save On Friday
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald put a cap on the team's 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one walk and no hits while striking out two. Sewald has now recorded the last two saves for the team and he leads the Mariners with a total of three saves on the year. Drew Steckenrider and Diego Castillo have two saves each, but neither has recorded a save since May 15. Sewald has been the most effective pitcher of the trio by a long shot this year. He has a 2.33 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP on the year. We're still likely looking at a committee approach in the bullpen, but Sewald could be emerging to the top of that committee.

Tue May 24 202209:05Paul Sewald Earns His Second Save On Monday
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald converted his second save of the season on Monday. He closed out the team's 7-6 victory over the Oakland Athletics, pitching a scoreless ninth inning during which he allowed one hit and recorded one strikeout. Sewald is 2-for-3 on save opportunities on the year with a 2.40 ERA and a 0.53 WHIP. The Mariners have been operating with a frustrating committee approach this season. Sewald is now tied with both Drew Steckenrider and Diego Castillo for the team lead in saves. It seems as if all three relievers should continue to earn save chances going forward.

Wed May 11 202205:52Paul Sewald Notches First Save On Tuesday
Seattle Mariners pitcher Paul Sewald allowed one run on one hit with a strikeout across 1 1/3 innings in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. He entered the eighth frame to protect a two-run lead. The 31-year-old surrendered a solo shot to Jean Segura. After that, he settled down, getting Rhys Hoskins to ground out, and struck out Johan Camargo to earn the save. He owns a 3.86 ERA, 0.54 WHIP, and a 10:1 K: BB across 9 1/3 innings in 2022. Sewald is mainly used in high-leverage situations but has plenty of fantasy value in leagues that reward saves and holds.

Tue Apr 26 202221:33Paul Sewald Could Return To The M's On Wednesday
Seattle Mariners interim manager Kristopher Negrn has reported that reliever Paul Sewald (illness) is back with the Mariners and could return from the COVID-19 injured list on Wednesday. Sewald has been sidelined for six days. In just four games this season, Sewald has thrown 3 2/3 innings pitched and not allowed a hit or a walk, and has struck out three. Over 62 games last season, Sewald posted a 3.06 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 104 strikeouts, 11 saves, and 16 holds in 64 2/3 IP. Sewald is one of the team's top relievers and is almost always utilized in high leverage situations. As was the case in 2021, Sewald should see a large number of hold opportunities with some save chances mixed in over the course of the season. He should be rostered in most formats, particularly in those that reward holds.

Wed Apr 20 202218:17Paul Sewald Lands On COVID-19 Injured List
The Seattle Mariners have placed relief pitcher Paul Sewald on the COVID-19 injured list. Fellow relief pitcher Penn Murfee was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move. No reason for Sewald's move to the COVID-19 injured list has been released by the team yet. The 31-year-old has been stellar over four appearances so far this year. He's pitched 3 2/3 innings and has yet to allow a walk or a hit while recording three strikeouts. He's one of the team's top setup men and could wind up seeing some saves opportunities this year as well.

Sun Oct 3 202101:31Paul Sewald Blows Save, Gets Gift Win
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald did not get the job done Saturday, giving up back-to-back walks before yielding a three-run home run to Jared Walsh in a disastrous eighth inning. He did strike out three batters in his inning of work. Sewald was fortunate that the offense bounced back in the bottom half of the inning, leaving him with a gift 10th win on the season. Sewald has been fallible of late, seeing his ERA and WHIP rise to 3.06 and 1.02 for the season. He's managed to reach 104 strikeouts in just 64 2/3 innings, which speaks to how significant his fantasy contributions have been despite lacking a consistent closer role.

Sat Sep 25 202110:55Paul Sewald Closes Door For 11th Save
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald was living dangerously Friday, allowing one hit and two walks before finally getting a groundout to first to finish a 6-5 game against the Los Angeles Angels and earn his 11th save of the season. Sewald notably entered after possible co-closer Drew Steckenrider pitched the eighth inning. Both pitchers are worth rostering as the season draws to a finish, but Sewald still appears to have the slight edge for the highest-leverage spots, and therefore is a higher priority for fantasy managers.

Fri Sep 24 202112:10Paul Sewald Allows A Run In 10th Save
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald recorded his 10th save of the year against the Oakland Athletics Thursday, giving up one run on a Matt Olson home run and striking out two batters. The Mariners now have had three different relievers save at least 10 games, which is a major league record. Sewald continues to strike out many batters, with 95 in 58 1/3 innings, but he has a 4.50 ERA in September. With save chances seemingly split with Drew Steckenrider, Sewald is much more valuable in leagues that reward holds as well.

Tue Sep 21 202111:16Paul Sewald Recores Five-Out Save Monday
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald recorded a five-out save against the Oakland Athletics Monday, bringing his season total to nine saves. Sewald entered in relief of an ineffective Diego Castillo with two runners on and proceeded to strike out both Matt Olson and Matt Chapman. He struck out three total and did not allow a baserunner. Sewald has now had three consecutive scoreless outings after having three consecutive in which he was scored upon. He appears to be back on track, though fantasy managers who are only in search of holds will be disappointed with his high-leverage usage.

Tue Sep 14 202112:42Drew Steckenrider Follows Paul Sewald For Ninth Save
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Drew Steckenrider pitched the ninth inning against the Boston Red Sox on Monday after Paul Sewald threw an ineffective eighth and earned his ninth save of the season by striking out two without allowing a baserunner. Steckenrider now has nine saves on the year, with eight in his last 30 games. He has out-saved Sewald three to one in their past seven games each. Fantasy managers should keep a close eye on this situation, and Steckenrider now holds standalone value, regardless of if roles change.

Tue Sep 14 202112:38Paul Sewald Falters In Eighth-Inning Appearance
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald allowed two solo home runs on Monday night, one each to Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers in a 5-4 victory. He was still credited for a hold with his inning of work, despite the rough outing. Sewald entered for the eighth inning in this contest, presumably to face the middle of the Boston order. He now has a 6.75 ERA with just one save in his last seven appearances. Drew Steckenrider relieved Sewald and earned the save. Sewald is still the man to roster in the Seattle pen, but fantasy managers should keep their eyes on this situation in the coming days.
