Fri May 24 201918:34Nats GM says manager Martinez safe for now despite struggles
WASHINGTON (AP) — Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo says second-year manager Dave Martinez's job is safe for now despite Washington's sluggish start to the season. The Nationals have lost five straight and entered Friday at 19-31, better than only the Miami Marlins, Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles.Rizzo says there is blame to go around. Asked specifically about his confidence in Martinez, he says "we're not making any decisions with a third of the season gone.""We've got a lot of season left. Davey's not happy with what's going on. Nobody's happy with what's going on — the fanbase, the ownership, and myself," he added. The team has dealt with injures to star hitters Anthony Rendon, Trea Turner, Juan Soto and Ryan Zimmerman, but the biggest culprit has been the poor bullpen.Washington has the highest bullpen ERA in the majors at 7.02 and leads the NL with 10 blown saves."Lot of people in this group right here that predicted us to win 90, 92 games and win the division and the World Series," Rizzo said in explaining why he's willing to stand pat. "That was our expectation coming into this, and a third into the season I'm certainly not going to pull the pin on that and blow it up."___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Martinez said the 35-year-old right-hander was walking without pain Friday.Washington also optioned infielder Wilmer Difo to Triple-A Fresno and recalled right-hander Kyle McGowin from Fresno.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Mon May 6 201902:28No surprise in NL East: It's a grind so far
As expected, the NL East has been a grind so far.The Phillies, Braves, Mets and Nationals are within five games of each other, with Philadelphia in first place at 19-14. Those four teams came into the season with high expectations , and given all the games they play against each other, it figured to be difficult for anyone to pull away. So far, that has been the case. The Phillies beat Washington 7-1 on Sunday to widen their lead over the fourth-place Nationals. Philadelphia is 15-9 against the NL East, although that includes a 5-2 mark against the last-place Marlins. The truth is, the top four teams in this fascinating division all have issues to worry about in the early going:— The Phillies have been solid, but so far Bryce Harper is having a similar season to last year — decent overall numbers, but a low batting average. He's hitting .233. Right-hander Nick Pivetta struggled so much, he earned a trip to the minors. Like in 2018, Philadelphia is near the bottom of the majors in defensive... [More]

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Ryan Braun's career-high sixth hit, a two-run single with one out in the 18th inning, lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 comeback victory over the New York Mets on Saturday night in the longest game in Miller Park history.Braun stood on first base with his hands raised above his head as Yasmani Grandal slid across home plate with the winning run, ending the game that lasted 5 hours and 22 minutes. A jubilant bunch of Brewers ran out to greet Braun, who was the only Milwaukee player to have multiple hits. The Mets took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 18th on Jeff McNeil's run-scoring single off Taylor Williams (1-1), who was Milwaukee's eighth and final pitcher. But the Brewers were far from done. Eric Thames drew a leadoff walk from Chris Flexen (0-2), who then got Mike Moustakas to fly out to center. Flexen, just recalled from Triple-A Syracuse earlier in the day, walked Grandal and Travis Shaw to load the bases for Braun. The Brewers' longest-tenured hit a sharp grounder... [More]

"I was in high school three years ago doing art projects and stuff. It's hard to even describe it. I think it's going to really set in when I take the field for the first time and get my first hit, get my first out on defense. There's going to be a lot of firsts out there, and they're all going to feel really good."Washington opted not to bring Kieboom up when incumbent shortstop Trea Turner suffered a broken right index finger on April 2.
