1B Paul Goldschmidt doubled in three trips Thursday at Milwaukee, extending his hitting streak at Miller Park to 14 games. He's a .408 career hitter and has reached base in 23 straight against the Brewers, while batting .500 in Milwaukee.

LF Yasmany Tomas missed a second consecutive game Thursday because of hip flexor tightness. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tomas went through pregame drills to determine whether he could come off the bench, but did not play.

RHP Jake Buchanan was claimed off waivers by the Reds from the Cubs on Thursday. Buchanan, 27, appeared in two games (one start) with the Cubs and was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA. In six innings, he gave up one run on three hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. In eight starts for Chicago's Triple-A Iowa affiliate, Buchanan was 2-2 with a 4.75 ERA. In 41 2/3 innings he gave up 49 hits with 29 strikeouts and 19 walks.

C James McCann suffered a left hand laceration after being hit by a pitch from Astros RHP Mike Fiers in the fourth inning. McCann required five stitches to close the cut and will be placed on the 10-day disabled list. The Tigers will make a corresponding roster move when they arrive in Chicago on Friday for their doubleheader against the White Sox.

RHP Justin Verlander allowed six runs on nine hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. He surrendered three home runs -- Astros SS Carlos Correa, 1B Marwin Gonzalez, and C Juan Centeno -- in a game for the second time this season. The Indians clubbed three homers off Verlander on April 15 in a 13-6 home win. Verlander issued at least three walks in a start for the fifth time this season.

1B Miguel Cabrera doubled in the first inning off Astros RHP Mike Fiers. It marked his 529th career double, which moves him into a tie for 40th place in major league history with Al Oliver. It was also his 346th double with Detroit, which gives him sole possession of ninth place in franchise history. Cabrera has 997 career extra-base hits, three shy of becoming the 39th player in history with 1,000.

HP Brad Hand may have solidified his grip on the Padres' closer job Thursday night when he earned his second save of the season -- and his second in as many nights -- by once again wriggling in and out of trouble to close out a 4-3 win over the Mets. Hand allowed one run on one hit and one walk in the ninth but retired the potential winning run, RF Jay Bruce, on a pop-up to third, to end the game. For the second straight night, RHP Brandon Maurer -- who has five of the Padres' nine saves this season -- worked the eighth inning. Manager Andy Green said he decided to go with Maurer in the eight because the left-handed hitting Bruce made the final out of the seventh. Had Bruce been due up to start the eighth, Green said he probably would have utilized Hand then. Hand is 0-3 with a 2.00 ERA in 23 games this season with 35 strikeouts over 27 innings.

RHP Jarred Cosart (right foot) felt better Thursday, one day after he took a comebacker off his right foot in the first inning of his start against the Mets. Cosart remained in the game but was hindered by the foot and exited after allowing four runs over 2 2/3 innings. Manager Andy Green said Cosart should be fine to make his next scheduled start on Monday night, when he is in line to face the Cubs at Petco Park. Cosart is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in five games (four starts) this season.

RHP Rafael Montero failed another audition Thursday when he took the loss in an emergency spot start after allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over just three innings in a 4-3 loss to the Padres. Montero was pressed into duty when the Mets scratched RHP Jacob deGrom due to a foreboding weather forecast and a reluctance to waste deGrom if the game was delayed or postponed after a few innings. But the game was played without interruption, albeit through a steady mist. Montero threw a whopping 87 pitches, including 45 in the first inning. The Mets are now 2-16 in Montero's last 18 appearances dating to last season. But with the Mets missing two projected members of their Opening Day rotation, and possessing few major league-caliber arms at Triple-A Las Vegas, it is likely Montero will remain on the roster for the foreseeable future. Montero is 0-4 with an 8.24 ERA and has allowed 50 baserunners in 19 2/3 innings.

RF Jay Bruce returned to the lineup and when he went 1-for-5 in the Mets' 4-3 loss to the Padres. Bruce sat out Wednesday's 6-5 loss to the Padres with a tight back that cropped up Tuesday, when he exited after five innings in the Mets' 9-3 win over the Padres. He said he has rarely had back issues in the past and doesn't expect it to be an issue going forward. Bruce is batting .246 with 11 homers and 30 RBIs in 42 games this season.

C Kevin Plawecki was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday. Plawecki was recalled on April 20 but batted just .125 with four RBIs in 10 games. He made five starts while C Travis d'Arnaud was on the disabled list but went just 2-for-18 in those games. Plawecki will likely resume starting at catcher for Las Vegas, for whom he hit .270 with one homer and seven RBIs in 10 games prior to his recall.

SS Asdrubal Cabrera, activated from the 10-day disabled list Thursday, hit into a double play to end the eighth inning in the Mets' 4-3 loss to the Padres. Cabrera missed one day more than the minimum with a left thumb injury, though he played through the ailment for several games after getting hurt while diving for a base hit on May 6. He played in both ends of a doubleheader for Double-A Binghamton on Wednesday and went 2-for-5. Cabrera is expected to play every day at shortstop for the Mets, which will push IF Jose Reyes into more of a utility role. In 34 games this season, Cabrera is batting .254 with three homers, 14 RBIs and three stolen bases.

RHP Jacob deGrom will take the mound a day later than anticipated Friday night, when he starts for the Mets in the opener of a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. DeGrom was scheduled to start Thursday night, when the Mets completed a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Citi Field, but he was pushed back due to a poor weather forecast in New York. He will be pitching for the first time since May 19, when he earned the victory after giving up just four hits and three walks while striking out nine over seven shutout innings in a 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels. DeGrom is the only Mets starter in the last 23 games to record an out in the seventh inning. He is 0-2 with a 2.49 ERA in four career starts against the Pirates.

1B/OF Peter O'Brien was designated for assignment. O'Brien, claimed off waivers by the Reds from Kansas City on May 16, was 4-for-20 with one home run and two RBIs at Triple-A Louisville.

OF Danny Valencia was in the starting lineup at first base Thursday. A ball got past him with two outs in the third as Trea Turner hit a hard grounder that was ruled a two-base error. At the plate, Valencia was 1-for-4 and is hitting .239.

OF Lonnie Chisenhall has been placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list. "He was experiencing concussion symptoms (Wednesday)," manager Terry Francona said. "He got tested and was found to have a lower grade concussion." The Indians still aren't sure when Chisenhall got the concussion, but they back-dated placing him on the DL to Monday, meaning he is eligible to come off the DL on Monday.

RHP Corey Kluber (lower back strain) was scheduled to make a rehab start for Triple-A Columbus on Thursday night, but the game was postponed. Kluber is now set to start Friday for Columbus. If he gets through that outing with no setbacks, it is possible he could be activated off the disabled list sometime next week. Kluber has been out since May 3.

OF Austin Jackson (hyperextended left big toe) could be activated off the disabled list Friday. He was scheduled to play right field for Triple-A Columbus in a rehab appearance Thursday. Jackson has been on the DL since May 2.

RHP Ken Giles worked a scoreless ninth inning for his 13th save. He has been scoreless in each of his last nine appearances at Minute Maid Park, dating to April 17. Giles has six saves in that span, and his season saves total is tied for first in the American League with Indians RHP Cody Allen.

C Brian McCann has resumed baseball activities, passed a concussion test and is on schedule to return from the 7-day concussion disabled list on Saturday, at which time C Juan Centeno is likely to be optioned to Triple-A Fresno. McCann suffered the concussion on May 14 in New York but wasn't diagnosed until later in the week.
