Buchanan has allowed seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 8.1 Grapefruit League innings this spring.
Buchanan served as Houston's long man out of the bullpen for a good stretch last summer, but Samuel Deduno might have a leg up on him for that role to open 2015, assuming he doesn't win the fifth starter competition. In that case, Buchanan would likely open 2015 with Triple-A Fresno.

Buchanan took no decision in Thursday's spot start against the Blue Jays, allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts over five innings.
Buchanan was called upon to start Thursday when scheduled starter Jarred Cosart was traded to Miami in a deadline deal. With Brad Peacock expected to rejoin the Astros' starting rotation soon, Buchanan will likely return to the long-man role out of the bullpen.

Buchanan will start Thursday night against the Blue Jays.

Buchanan allowed five earned runs over 4.1 innings during his last start for the Astros on June 21, and has surrendered seven total earned runs over 11.1 innings this season. He's likely just a temporary option due to the last-minute nature of Thursday's move.
