RHP Jason Grilli, obtained in a trade with the Braves on Tuesday, made his Blue Jays debut Wednesday in Toronto's 7-0 victory over the Yankees. He retired RF Carlos Beltran on a fly ball but not until making an errant pickoff throw to second to put runners at the corners. He came in to face Beltran, who had two hits in the game against RHP Aaron Sanchez. "To have that kind of an adrenalin rush again, I live and thrive off that," Grilli said. "I came into a situation where a guy has pitched a stellar game and gave us a great performance tonight. Anytime you have inherited runners, it's nice to slam that door. I didn't want to create a big situation. Obviously, even with the experience, the adrenalin was definitely flowing, and luckily it didn't hurt us in the end."

RHP Jason Grilli was obtained with cash considerations in a trade with the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday for minor-league RHP Sean Ratcliffe. Grilli was acquired to help a beleaguered bullpen. The 39-year-old was 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA and two saves in 21 games with the Braves this season. He is returning from a torn left Achilles tendon suffered last July. In his past five outings, covering 4 2/3 innings, he had not allowed a run. General manager Ross Atkins said Grilli has "professionalism and experience" and those were factors in acquiring him. "There's a lot we like about Jason and how he complements this team," Atkins said on Tuesday night. "The first thing that comes to mind is experience, he's been on winning teams, very high-leverage situations and gets ton of swing and miss, has gotten a ton of swing and miss over his career. Those are good attributes for someone to be in the bullpen, we'll see how it pans out here." The Braves are paying the remainder of his $3.5-million salary this season, according to The Associated Press. The Blue Jays are responsible for Grilli's incentives for games finished and appearances and the $250,000 buyout on his $3 million club option for 2017. Manager John Gibbons said he was not sure if Grilli would join the team in time for Wednesday's series finale against the New York Yankees. Grilli' father, Steve, pitched in one game for the Blue Jays in 1979.

Grilli suffered the injury going to cover first base on a grounder and collapsed to the ground. He could not put any weight on his left leg and needed to be carted off the field. Atlanta Braves closer Jason Grilli will miss the rest of the season after suffering a ruptured left Achilles' tendon Saturday against the Colorado Rockies, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In his first season this year with the Braves, Grilli has 24 saves and 2.67 ERA in 35 appearances, striking out 45 in 33.2 innings. The 38-year-old is owed $6.5 million over the next two seasons, and at worst, was expected to be an attractive trade commodity for a playoff bound team in need of relief pitching come the July 31 trade deadline. Jim Johnson likely will take over as the closer. Johnson had 101 saves with the Baltimore Orioles from 2012-2013. He has not allowed a run since June 8 and has a 2.14 ERA in 42 innings this season.

He has pitched each of the last three days, though, so don't be surprised if manager Fredi Gonzalez turns elsewhere if a save situation arises Wednesday.

Grilli allowed one run on two hits, walking one and striking out one while recording just the one out in the Braves 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday night.
Grilli (2-3, 2.93 ERA) came on with the game tied at 3-3 to start the bottom of the tenth. A hit and an intentional walk was followed by a walk-off double off the bat of Jordy Mercer to end it. Grilli has done a respectable job for the Braves as he attempts to replace Craig Kimbrel, so he will likely continue to see the majority of save chances.
