Nolin (groin) was officially placedon the 15 Day DL on Saturday.

Nolin was expected to be in contention for a rotation spot with the A's this spring, but missed the entire Cactus League schedule with his groin injury. He will remain in Phoenix for extended spring training and once he is healthy, Nolin is expected to be in the Triple-A Nashville rotation.

A groin strain has kept Nolin down for well over a month now, but he did complete a 22-pitch side session last week and appears to be progressing. There is no set timetable for him to pitch in games, but Nolin figures to report to Triple-A once completely healthy and will likely be a starting option for the big club in the second half of the season. Nolin came over from Toronto in the Josh Donaldson deal.

It is not clear yet if he will be able to get into any spring games before the team breaks camp, but Nolin is an obvious candidate for extended spring training. He won't open the season as a member of the A's rotation, but it would not be surprising to see him find his way into the mix before the All-Star break.

He continues to work his way back from sports hernia surgery, and if he can progress to pitching in games in the near future, he could get his hat in the ring for the fifth starter spot with the A's out of camp. Nolin has more fantasy potential as a starter than Kendall Graveman, who also came to Oakland from Toronto in the Josh Donaldson trade. In most leagues, Nolin is not quite worth drafting yet, but he would be worth a look in deeper formats if he makes the rotation or gets called up after the start of the season to join the rotation.

Nolin has been shut down from throwing on a mound, but he at least feels good enough to still play soft toss. The recurring groin issue leaves his status in question for the start of the 2015 season, and even at full health he'd have to compete for a roster spot.

Considering Nolin has missed 95 total days in the last two seasons with groin strains, this could very well be a long-term injury that will prevent Nolin from making the team out of spring training. His seven earned runs in 2.1 career innings pitched could also be a problem.

This does not sound like a serious issue for and manager Bob Melvin indicated that Nolin is feeling better. Nolin is in the mix for the back end of the A's rotation, but if this injury should linger for any reason, it could impact his chances at winning a rotation spot.

Nolin was traded to the A's on Friday as part of a trade that also sent Brett Lawrie and other prospects to Oakland in exchange for Josh Donaldson, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports.

Nolin posted a 3.50 ERA in 17 Triple-A starts last season and becomes one of the A's better pitching prospects, so he could contend for a spot in the big league rotation during spring training.

The Blue Jays recalled Nolin from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.

Nolin has not allowed a run in 19 2/3 innings, and this was his first start without a walk. He did allow three doubles as part of his four hits, but he has generally limited extra base hits this season. With the struggles of R.A. Dickey, Dustin McGowan, and Brandon Morrow, Nolin could get a chance if he keeps up his hot streak.

Batters are hitting .175/.257/.270 against Nolin for the season, and he sports a sparkling 2.70 ERA and a 11.3 K/9. He profiles as a #4 starter with the possibility to be a #3 starter, so there's no need to snatch him up until there is an opening in Toronto.
