Wed Mar 26 201413:37Wieland undergoes elbow surgery
Joe Wieland underwent surgery Tuesday to correct loose bodies and an impingement in his right elbow.
The initial fear was that Wieland had damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, but the situation wasn't nearly as serious. Still, he's not expected to throw for six weeks and will likely be sidelined until around midseason.

It's described as a relatively simple clean-up procedure and will be performed by Dr. Kremchek. Missing the first half of the season at a minimum, Wieland should no longer be an option in redraft leagues.

An MRI taken on Wieland this week revealed no damage to his UCL, which was a sigh of relief for the young right-hander, but they're still trying to determine the cause for his renewed soreness. He's likley to begin the season on the disabled list.

Mon Mar 17 201420:47MRI shows no damage to Joe Wieland's UCL
An MRI taken Monday on Joe Wieland's sore right arm showed no UCL damage.
In other words, the young right-hander does not need a second Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. The Padres will reevaluate Wieland in about 10 days. He remains an attractive pitching prospect, but injuries have derailed his rise over the past couple of years.

Mon Mar 17 201412:45Wieland could be dealing with triceps issue
Padres manager Bud Black said Monday that the conversations he's had with Joe Wieland about his injury revolved more around the triceps area rather than the elbow.
Wieland dealt with triceps problems last year as he worked his way back from Tommy John surgery. Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan reported earlier Monday that the Padres had "significant concern" that Wieland might have re-tore his UCL, but it appears the issue involves another part of the arm. More will obviously be known when Wieland undergoes an MRI Monday.

Mon Mar 17 201408:26Wieland could need more Tommy John surgery
Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan reports that there is "significant concern" that Joe Wieland might have re-torn the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Fellow teammate Cory Luebke suffered the same fate earlier this year. Wieland has an MRI scheduled for Monday before anything is officially known, but it certainly doesn't look good. The 24-year-old right-hander made just seven starts in 2012 and missed all of last season due to elbow issues.

Sat Mar 15 201420:16Joe Wieland hit hard in loss to Dodgers
Joe Wieland was hit hard in Saturday's loss to the Dodgers, allowing five runs on six hits in his 2 1/3 innings of work.
Wieland struggled mightily with his command, issuing five walks while fanning two. He's still working his way back from Tommy John surgery, so a bit of rust is to be expected, but it doesn't look like he's anywhere close to being ready to contribute to the Padres rotation.

Fri Feb 14 201417:26Joe Wieland throws bullpen session
Joe Wieland (elbow) threw a 25-30 pitch bullpen session Friday.
He threw only fastballs and a few changeups, but it was a nice step for the right-hander. "I've been waiting a long time for that," Wieland said. "And it felt great to have all of the coaches there, not just watching me but evaluating me." Wieland had three setbacks on his way back from Tommy John surgery, dealing with a triceps strain that later became a stress reaction. He's healthy now, though, and ready to compete for a roster spot. Most likely he'll begin the year in the Triple-A rotation.
