Fri Apr 24 201516:07Joe Wieland: Will Start Saturday Or Sunday
Wieland is expected to be called up to start Saturday or Sunday against the Padres, the Los Angeles Times' Dylan Hernandez reports.
This makes sense, as the Dodgers could not afford to ride Mike Bolsinger in the rotation much longer. Brett Anderson and Clayton Kershaw will now be allowed to make their next starts on an extra day of rest. Wieland had a 1.80 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 10 innings (two starts) this season for Triple-A Oklahoma City. There's a solid chance that Wieland can stick in the rotation until Hyun-Jin Ryu is able to return, so he is worth a flier in deeper leagues given the strength of his team and the favorable pitching environments in 60 percent of the ballparks in the division.

Wieland tossed five innings of two-hit, shutout ball in a rain-shortened game for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday.
Wieland didn't walk a batter and fanned five to give him a 1.80 ERA this year. He's in line for a callup should the team need another starter.
Sun Apr 5 201502:14Wieland optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque
Wieland has been optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque, the LA Times reports.
At one point he was considered the favorite to step in to replace the injured Hyun-Jin Ryu, but because of MLB roster rules that seems less likely now.

Wieland has tossed nine innings of one-run ball and is one option to replaced the injured Hyun-Jin Ryu in the Opening Day rotation, the Dodgers' official site reports.
Wieland also has a 9:3 K:BB and could be ahead of other internal candidates, a list that includes Mike Bolsinger, Carlos Frias, and Zach Lee.

Wieland will be traded to the Dodgers as part of the package for outfielder Matt Kemp, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.
Wieland bounced around the Padres' farm system in 2014, and was eventually able to log 11.1 innings at the Major League level. If he sticks with the big league club, the right-hander will compete for a back-end rotation spot, and could also be used in long relief.
Sat Dec 6 201415:03Wieland agreed to one-year
Wieland agreed to a one-year, $590,000 contract with the Padres on Saturday, avoiding arbitration, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports.
Wieland underwent Tommy John surgery in July of 2012 and needed a cleanup procedure on the elbow in March, which kept him off a big-league mound until September. The right-hander struggled in his four appearances last season (7.15 ERA), but the Padres will give Wieland an opportunity to prove himself on a low-cost deal in 2015.

Wieland collected his first win of the season Wednesday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five Rockies over 5.1 innings.
Wednesday was Wieland's best outing of the year, which isn't saying much, since he lasted only 2.1 innings in his previous start. The victory also marks the first in Wieland's career as he went 0-4 in 2012 for the Padres.
Mon Sep 22 201418:51Wieland named starter for Wednesday's game against Rockies
Wieland was named the starter for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The Padres decided it was in the best interest Tyson Ross (forearm) to shut him down for the season, so Wieland will be called upon to fill the vacancy in the rotation. Wieland has looked a little rusty since returning to the majors in September following a long road back from July 2012 Tommy John surgery, giving up six runs on 13 hits and two walks over six innings. He'll more than likely face a restricted pitch count in his final outing of the season, but with a full offseason to recover, he could push for a full-time spot in the rotation in 2015.

Wieland lasted only 2.1 innings, giving up four runs and seven hits while striking out one and walking two Saturday against the Rockies.
It was Wieland's first game in nearly two and a half years since reconstructive elbow surgery. He last pitched on May 6, 2012 and it showed. He struggled through 2.1 innings, allowing four runs and seven hits, but he didn't figure in the decision.
Fri Sep 5 201414:31Wieland will start Saturday against Rockies
Wieland will start Saturday against the Rockies, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports.
Wieland will oppose Jorge De La Rosa at Coors Field exactly 28 months to the day since his last major league start. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in July of 2012 and required another procedure in March of this year to clean up some loose bodies and an impingement in his elbow, but he was sharp in four starts for Triple-A El Paso, posting a 3.42 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 20:4 K:BB over 23.2 innings.
Mon Sep 1 201412:29Wieland will be recalled from Triple-A San Antonio on Tuesday
Wieland will be recalled from Triple-A San Antonio on Tuesday, Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press reports.
Since he was reinstated from the 60-day DL on Aug. 10, Wieland has been a part of the Triple-A rotation, going 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA, 1.121 WHIP, and 20:4 K:BB in 23.2 innings (four starts). It's unclear if he'll be afforded spot nods with the big club, especially following Robbie Erlin's recall Monday, but the Padres will have the flexibility to turn to a six-man rotation with the moves.
Mon Aug 11 201413:35Wieland optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday
Wieland was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Wieland's rocky road the past few years stemmed from Tommy John surgery in July of 2012, and his recovery lingered throughout the 2013 campaign. As he built up strength this spring, he suffered another setback, which required a clean-up procedure in late March. The final stages of his rehab included five starts between the Arizona League Padres and Double-A San Antonio. In two nods at the latter, he gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and one walk to go with six strikeouts in nine innings. If he keeps up his recent pace, the Padres could use Wieland during the final month and a half, if Jesse Hahn is in fact shut down due to a fast-approaching innings limit.
Sun Aug 10 201417:39Wieland (elbow) reinstated from 60-day disabled list Sunday
Wieland (elbow) was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list Sunday.
Wieland pitched four innnings in a rehab assignment last Sunday, and appears to be ready to return to the big league club. He was activated from the disabled list Sunday, but it's unclear what the team will do with him now that he is off the disabled list.
Mon Aug 4 201413:05Wieland (elbow) pitched for innings in rehab assignment Sunday
Wieland (elbow) pitched for innings in a rehab assignment Sunday, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out two0, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Wieland is still on the road to recovery from an arthroscopic procedure he had done in March to clean up his right elbow. The latest rehab outing was scheduled for 60 pitches, and the number will continue to increase as Wieland works his way back to full strength. It is unclear if he will pitch again in the majors this season, but the Padres probably won't rush him as they are currently out of the race for the playoffs.

Wieland (elbow) is scheduled to approach 60 pitches in a rehab outing Sunday at Double-A San Antonio, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The appearance will come after three recent games with the Arizona League Padres, where Wieland yielded two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out 10 in six innings. As he builds strength in his arm, his first major league contest since 2012 could very well come to pass before the season concludes, if the need arises for a spot nod or Jesse Hahn is shut down in order to limit his innings count.

Wieland (elbow) has begun a rehab assignment with Double-A San Antonio, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The training staff gave Wieland the green light to advance to San Antonio following three successful appearances with the team's rookie-level club. Wieland has yet to pitch in the major leagues this season and will require a lengthy assignment, but he may be able to contribute before the end of the month.
Sat Jul 19 201421:37Joe Wieland (elbow) rehabbing in the AZL
Joe Wieland (elbow) has joined the Padres' Arizona League affiliate to begin a rehab assignment.
Wieland had Tommy John surgery in July 2012 and hasn't thrown a pitch in a major league game since. He could become an option for the Padres' rotation by the end of August, but the righty probably won't be a fantasy factor.

Wed May 28 201418:34Wieland (elbow) to play catch from 105 feet
Joe Wieland (elbow) was scheduled to play catch from 105 feet on Wednesday.
Wieland has been playing catch from 75 feet in recent weeks, so he's continuing to progress. He said he hopes to start a rehab stint by mid-June. A return to the Padres shortly after the All-Star break seems reasonable, given that timetable.

Padres GM Josh Byrnes said Saturday that Joe Wieland (elbow) has begun playing catch from 75 feet.
Wieland was placed on the 60-day disabled list at the beginning of April after undergoing surgery on March 26 to repair an impingement and clear out loose bodies in his throwing elbow. The right-hander is aiming to return to live action before the All-Star break.

Wed Apr 2 201414:48Joe Wieland moved to 60-day DL
Padres transferred RHP Joe Wieland from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for the addition of Bobby LaFromboise. Wieland underwent surgery a week ago to remove scar tissue from his elbow and is hoping to return to the Padres before the All-Star break.
