"It doesn't matter where I hit in the lineup," he said. "I'm going to go up there and have the same approach. Look for a good pitch and drive it up the middle."

2B Johnny Giavotella was not in the lineup Wednesday despite getting three hits, including a three-run homer, Tuesday against the Royals. "It makes it a little more difficult," Giavotella admitted when asked about getting inconsistent playing time. "Every player performs better when they get everyday at-bats. Unfortunately it's not my role right now, but I'm not going to be discouraged about it. I'm going to help the team any way that I can." 2B Cliff Pennington started in Giavotella's place and went 0-for-3.

2B Johnny Giavotella will fight to retain his position in the starting lineup after unexpectedly earning it last spring. Despite playing no more than 53 games in any single season before last year, Giovatella beat three competitors in spring training for the infield spot, then hit .272 with 25 doubles, five triples and a .318 on-base percentage. But Giavotella's 12 errors in 535 chances raised concerns. Veteran INF Cliff Pennington, signed as a free agent, has the best chance to displace Giavotella.

Giavotella (illness) could return this weekend, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.
A condition known as fourth nerve palsy has inhibited Giavotella's vision, causing him to see double and miss over a month of action, but manager Mike Sciscia said Tuesday that the second baseman's vision is all good now. Giavotella progressed from normal batting practice to facing live pitching Tuesday, and it sounds like he could bump Taylor Featherston to the bench as soon as Friday.

Giavotella (illness) remains out of Sunday's lineup against the Blue Jays.
Giavotella's illness forced him to go home prior to Friday's contest, and it will keep him out through Sunday's game at a minimum. There's no indication that it's anything more than just a common bug, so it seems unlikely he'll be held out too much longer because of it. The Angels are off Monday, so perhaps the extra day of rest will be enough for Giavotella to rejoin the lineup Tuesday.
