Sands has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Columbus, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Sands can now elect to stay within the organization or test the free agent waters. The outfielder had been off to a strong start in limited opportunities, so he may garner interest from a team in search of a right-handed bat should he choose to go that route.
Wed Apr 29 201513:53Sands designated for assignment by Indians on Wednesday
Sands was designated for assignment by the Indians on Wednesday.
Sands went an impressive 8-for-23 (.348) in nine games with the Indians, but he totaled just six at-bats since Apr. 15, so the team decided to cut him loose to open up a spot for reliever Ryan Webb. Sands' next step will be uncertain until after his waiver period has ended.

Sands will start in right field and bat seventh Saturday against the Tigers.
Brandon Moss will sit with lefty David Price on the hill for Detroit, affording Sands an opportunity to start for the first time in a Cleveland uniform. It's a small sample (97 PA), but Sands has hit .289/.340/.511 against left-handed pitching at the major league level so far in his career.
Fri Apr 10 201511:00Sands recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Friday
Sands was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Friday.
This provides a strong hint that Michael Brantley (back) won't be ready for Friday's game against Detroit, even though the Indians aren't placing their star outfielder on the disabled list. While he could get some playing time against left-handed pitching, Sands probably won't be in the lineup for Friday's game, with Cleveland facing right-handed Alfredo Simon.

Sands (wrist) will likely be called up for Friday's game against the Tigers, WTAM 1100's Nick Camino reports.
With Michael Brantley (back) missing the last two games, the Indians could use an extra outfielder. Sands has apparently recovered from the wrist issue that bothered him this spring, but he probably won't see enough at-bats to be worth an add in deep leagues, even if Brantley lands on the disabled list.
Mon Mar 30 201513:24Sands (wrist) optioned to Triple-A on Monday
Sands (wrist) was optioned to Triple-A on Monday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Paul Hoynes reports.
This leaves Jesus Aguilar, Michael Martinez and Austin Adams battling for the final bench spot on the Indians. Look for Sands to continue to recover from wrist surgery in the minor leagues, while serving as organizational outfield depth.

Sands (wrist) signed a minor league contract with the Indians, which includes an invite to spring training.
Sands only has 22 plate appearances in the major leagues since 2012, and does not figure to be more than a source of organizational outfield depth. He is also recovering from wrist surgery, which is another factor working against Sands' chances of making the roster out of spring training.
Sun Nov 9 201416:45Sands designated for assignment last week
Sands was designated for assignment last week, but has chosen free agency, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Sands is currently recovering from wrist surgery, but now he will be on the look out for a new team as well. Sands has 82 career games in the majors, but has hit just .240 with an OBP of .317 in those games. He will have his choice of clubs during the offseason, so he will be able take his best opportunity to make the majors.
Mon Nov 3 201413:37Sands (wrist) removed from 60-day disabled list Monday
Sands (wrist) was removed from the 60-day disabled list Monday, Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Sands was removed from the 60-day DL on Monday as part of a move that is required in the offseason as the 60-day DL is dissolved. He should be fine for the start of spring training next season, but doesn't have a guaranteed spot on the roster heading into next season.
Wed Aug 20 201415:43Sands (wrist) transferred to 60-day disabled list Wednesday
Sands (wrist) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The move is procedural in order to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. Sands will continue to rehab his left wrist, which sustained a torn sheath in mid-July and ended his season prematurely.
Fri Jul 11 201416:14Jerry Sands needs season-ending wrist surgery
Jerry Sands needs season-ending surgery on his left wrist.
Sands simply wasn't recovering as hoped and it turns out he needs to get cut open. The outfielder picked up just four hits in 21 at-bats for the Rays this season.

Wed Jul 9 201409:38Jerry Sands (wrist) runs the bases
Jerry Sands (wrist) ran the bases on Tuesday.
Sands is a little over two weeks removed from straining his left wrist and is finally ready to do some baseball activities. There's no timetable for him to swing a bat, which obviously will be the biggest step for him.

Jerry Sands is expected to miss at least the next two weeks because of a left wrist injury.

Tue Jun 17 201400:22Jerry Sands homers to lead Rays
Pinch-hitter Jerry Sands delivered a two-run homer off Brian Matusz in the bottom of the eighth to lead the Rays to a 5-4 win over the Orioles on Monday.
Manager Joe Maddon originally sent up David DeJesus to hit for Sean Rodriguez in a 3-3 game. When the Orioles countered by replacing Darren O'Day with Matusz, the Rays brought in Sands and Sands hit his first big-league homer since 2011. He had four in 198 at-bats for the Dodgers that year, but he's been given just 34 major league at-bats in the three years since.

Sun Jun 1 201410:44Jerry Sands called up from Triple-A
Rays purchased the contract of OF Jerry Sands from Triple-A Durham.
Sands earned the call-up after batting .268/.352/.474 with nine homers over 54 games at Durham. He's in the DH spot and hitting cleanup Sunday for the Rays and should see pretty regular playing time while Wil Myers (wrist) is out. Sands is worth a look in AL-only formats.

Sat Mar 15 201413:05Jerry Sands to get a look at third base also
Rays coach Dave Martinez said Saturday that Jerry Sands will get a look at third base this spring in an effort to further increase his versatility.
Rays manager Joe Maddon loves players who are versatile defensively, and Sands can increase his chances of making the team with each new position he can learn. He currently has the ability to man first base or either corner outfield spot. The 26-year-old is hitting .375 (9-for-24) with three homers and six RBI in Grapefruit League play.

Mon Dec 23 201315:02Rays claim Jerry Sands off waivers from PIT
Rays claimed OF/1B Jerry Sands off waivers from the Pirates.
Sands, a former top prospect of the Dodgers, struggled in 2013 with the Pirates' Triple-A team and did not receive a major league at-bat. The 26-year-old is doubtful to make the Rays' Opening Day roster next spring.
