Mon Sep 27 201017:48Savery moving away from pitching?
Joe Savery, who was selected in the first round of the 2007 draft as a pitcher, is currently playing first base with the organization's instructional league team.
It's disappointing considering that he was a No. 19 pick in 2007, but his velocity has completely evaporated. The 24-year-old played first base and batted third during most of his time with Rice, so the Phillies will see what he can do as a position player. "It's hard to give up on [pitching] and feel you didn't do what you were signed to do," said Savery. "It's hard to not be able to do the things you used to do. But that's part of the game and life. This has been an emotionally tough thing. But I am excited the Phillies are giving me a chance to look at this to see if there's something I can give to this game." We'll soon learn if the experiment becomes an official switch.
