ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Michael Young was really bummed about being traded to the Texas Rangers in the summer of 2000.Texas became home for the kid from California, and later this summer the Rangers will retire the No. 10 jersey of the former seven-time All-Star infielder, who has played more games and has more hits than any player in franchise history."Part of me is still really trying to process this whole thing and recognize what it means," Young said Tuesday.Young, part of the franchise's only two World Series teams, will be the fifth Ranger to have his number retired by the club, and the second this season. The Rangers' announcement came only 10 days after former third baseman Adrián Beltré's No. 29 jersey was retired, with Young part of that ceremony. Young will be honored Aug. 31 before a game against Seattle.A Double-A player when he got traded from Toronto, Young's only thoughts then had been about making the majors with the Blue Jays. CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox plan to extend the protective netting to the foul poles at Guaranteed Rate Field, becoming the first major league team to take that step since a couple of high-profile injuries this summer increased the focus on fan safety at ballparks. The White Sox and Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, which owns the ballpark, are hoping to complete the project this season. They say they will announce more details at a later date. Now that one team has jumped in front on the move, there likely will be more to come. It's hard to imagine a scenario where one major league team feels comfortable with less protection for fans than at another ballpark."Obviously that's a positive step in this sport," Chicago Cubs outfielder Albert Almora Jr. said before their game against the crosstown White Sox on Tuesday night. "I don't think anybody should go home with bumps or bruises or even worse. So whatever they got to do to take care of that, I'm glad they're taking procedures."Following... [More]

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox plan to extend the protective netting all the way to the foul poles at Guaranteed Rate Field, becoming the first major league team to take such a step in the wake of a couple of high-profile fan injuries. The White Sox and Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, which owns the ballpark, are hoping to complete the project this summer. They say they will announce more details at a later date.Following recommendations from Major League Baseball, by the start of the 2018 season all 30 teams had expanded their protective netting to at least the far ends of the dugouts after several fans were injured by foul balls in 2017.But a liner off the bat of Chicago Cubs outfielder Albert Almora Jr. struck a young girl in Houston in May, and a woman was hit by a foul ball from White Sox outfielder Eloy Jiménez in Chicago on June 10. Each of the incidents occurred in the stands beyond the dugout on the third base side. The Chicago Sun-Times was the first to report on the plans for Guaranteed Rate Field.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton returned from the injured list and was in the lineup for Tuesday night's scheduled game against division rival Tampa Bay.The 2017 National League MVP was to bat fifth and play right field. Stanton last appeared in a big league game on March 31, landing on the injured list a day later with a strained left biceps that later led to shoulder complications."It's been a long time. It feels longer than it has been for me," Stanton said. "The boys have been fun to watch while I've been gone, so it's going to be good to fall in and battle with them."The 29-year-old star began a short-lived rehab assignment in mid-May before a sore left calf landed him right back on the shelf."Once I was ready I started taking at-bats. First extended spring training, then I got hit in the knee and that set me back," Stanton said. "I probably should have took some more time than I did, and that set me back because my knee was unstable and my calf strained."Stanton... [More]
