NEW YORK (AP) — The traditional rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will take a radical twist when they meet in London next month: They will play on artificial turf for the first time in more than 2,200 games over a century.Major League Baseball has access to Olympic Stadium for 21 days before the games on June 29 and 30, the sport's first regular-season contests in Europe, and just five days after to clear out. The league concluded there was not enough time to install real grass.Starting June 6, gravel will be placed over the covering protecting West Ham's grass soccer pitch and the running track that is a legacy from the 2012 Olympics. The artificial turf baseball field, similar to modern surfaces used by a few big league clubs, will be installed atop that."It's the first Yankees-Red Sox game out of the country, so why not a lot of firsts?" New York pitcher CC Sabathia said. "I think it will be fine."Instead, 141,913 square feet of FieldTurf Vertex will be transported... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — So much for burying the hatchet.New York Mets third baseman Todd Frazier and Washington outfielder Adam Eaton had a heated exchange between innings that was caught by a television camera Monday night at Citi Field. The two players jawed at each other from a distance, prompting several Nationals to take a few steps out of the dugout before Frazier and Eaton were guided in opposite directions. Eaton took his position in right field, and Frazier was led back to the Mets bench on the first base side. The two were teammates with the Chicago White Sox in 2016 but apparently have an acrimonious history."He's chirping all the way across the infield. I don't know. He must really like me because he wants to get my attention it seems like every time we come here to town. He really cares what I think about him, I guess. I don't know what the deal is," Eaton said following New York's 5-3 victory over the Nationals. "He's always yelling across the infield at me. He's made a habit of it.... [More]

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:LOOKING FOR SIXYankees right-hander Domingo Germán (8-1, 2.50 ERA) seeks to win his sixth consecutive start on Tuesday night against the last-place Orioles. The major league leader in victories, Germán has a chance to join Tommy John (1979), Herb Pennock (1926) and Jack Chesbro (1904) as the only Yankees to notch nine wins by the end of May.It's pretty heady stuff for a 26-year-old who entered the season with a 2-7 career record.Baltimore will counter with rookie Davis Hess (1-5, 5.58), who has gone seven straight starts without a victory, including two losses to New York during that span.STREAKINGHouston ace Justin Verlander (7-1, 2.38 ERA) will look for his fourth straight win and the seventh in eight starts when he faces the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday in the second game of a four-game series. Verlander has dominated in his last two outings against Texas and Detroit, allowing one run and three hits while striking out 17 in 14 innings.... [More]

Take away George Springer and Jose Altuve, and maybe the Houston Astros start to look a little more beatable.Maybe.The Boston Red Sox finally snapped Houston's 10-game winning streak Sunday with a 4-3 victory after Springer left the game with lower back stiffness. The Astros were already playing without Altuve, on the injured list with a strained left hamstring, but that injury did little to slow Houston. Even after Sunday's loss, the Astros have the best record and best run differential in the major leagues. They lead the AL West by 8 ½ games.Altuve hasn't played since May 10, so Houston's recent torrid stretch took place largely without him. That's a scary thought for the rest of the American League. In their first four games without their star second baseman, the Astros scored 45 runs against the Rangers and Tigers."Our guys are seeing the ball really well and making it tough on them," Houston manager AJ Hinch said while the Astros were in Detroit. "Driving the pitch counts through the... [More]

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have dropped their protest over the pitching delivery of Washington reliever Sean Doolittle.Cubs manager Joe Maddon made the announcement before Sunday night's game against the Nationals.Maddon came out twice in the ninth inning of a 5-2 loss Saturday night to complain to plate umpire San Holbrook about Doolittle. Maddon said he believed the left-handed Doolittle was tapping his right toe on the ground before coming to the plate.Cubs reliever Carl Edwards Jr. was informed at the end of spring training that his delivery, which featured a similar toe-tap, was illegal. That ruling miffed Maddon and the Cubs."The whole thing I really wanted to get done was to protect Carl," Maddon said Sunday. "I really didn't anticipate a whole lot to be done with (the protest) even though I still don't agree with the conclusion because I think it's exactly what Carl did, only a different version of it."But the point was, I would not be a good parent had I not spoken up for...
