Mon Jul 20 201520:50Machi designated for assignment by Giants on Monday
Machi was designated for assignment by the Giants on Monday.
The 33-year-old reliever hasn't been able to replicate the success he experienced the last two seasons, as he's struggled all year long. That includes giving up two hits in each of his last three appearances. With Tim Hudson ready to come off the DL, Machi was a casualty. It seems likely that a bullpen-needy team will take a chance on Machi via waiver claim or trade, so we probably won't see him back at Triple-A Sacramento.
Tue Jun 23 201514:21Machi (groin) reinstated from DL on Tuesday
Machi (groin) was reinstated from the DL on Tuesday, Chris Haft of MLB.com reports.
Machi spent just over two weeks on the DL with a left groin strain, and he figures to return to a middle relief role, despite holding a less-than-stellar 5.47 on the season. In a corresponding move, the Giants optioned right-hander Mike Broadway to Triple-A Sacramento.

San Francisco Giants pitcher Jean Machi was activated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after missing two weeks with a groin injury, according to MLB.com. Machi will resume middle relief duties, and the team optioned pitcher Mike Broadway to Triple-A Sacramento to clear room for him.
Fri Jun 19 201520:33Machi (groin) ready to return from disabled list
Machi (groin) is ready to return from the disabled list, according to Giants reporter Andrew Beggarly.
While Machi has seemingly recovered from his groin injury, he will not officially be activated from the disabled list until Tuesday or Wednesday. Expect him to resume pitching in middle relief when he rejoins the big club.
Fri Jun 5 201516:18Machi placed on 15-day DL Friday with left groin strain
Machi was placed on the 15-day DL Friday with a left groin strain, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports.
Machi had been pitching pretty poorly out of the bullpen so far, as his ERA sits at 5.47, which is more than double his 2.58 mark from 2014. Casey McGehee was called up from Triple-A to add infield depth as a corresponding move.
Sun Apr 5 201517:55Machi has made 25-man roster
Machi has made the 25-man roster, CSN Bay Area reports.
Machi was expected to win the battle for the final bullpen spot over George Kontos this spring, but the club opted to keep both pitchers and designated infielder, Ehire Adrianza, for assignment. The 33-year-old righty has posted sub-3.00 ERAs while accruing 28 holds over the past two seasons. More of the same can be expected from the power-pitcher this season; however, Machi was significantly worse in the second-half of 2014, so those chasing holds should be wary of his conditioning.

With Hunter Strickland being optioned down to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, it appears that Machi has won the final bullpen spot for the Giants.
Machi had a great first half last year, posting a 1.84 ERA prior to the All-Star break, and being one of the better middle relief options in fantasy. However, he faltered down the stretch, posting a 3.86 ERA post-All-Star break. The general consensus was that the 33-year-old reliever simply ran out of gas after being used so much in the first part of the season. Whatever the cause, the end results were strong and the Giants appear to be putting Machi on their Opening Day roster. Assuming he is refreshed after the offseason, Machi should be a decent middle relief option who can get a handful of holds.

Machi blew the lead Thursday, surrendering three runs (two homers) against the Padres.
Machi has put together a strong campaign as a whole (2.58 ERA, 0.95 WHIP), but he has now given up three runs in two of his last four outings. He will likely see one more appearance before the season ends, but he is obviously getting gassed down the stretch.

Machi retired the only batter he faced Saturday against the Royals, lowering his season ERA to 1.63.
With Sergio Romo falling out of the closer role, Machi has become a more importance piece in the bridge to the ninth inning this season. Most of the value Machi has provided in 2014 has come from the wins column, as he's managed to scoop up six victories in relief as part of the San Francisco stable of bullpen arms.
Sat May 24 201401:21Jean Machi gets five-out save
Jean Machi got five outs for his second save of the year in the Giants' 6-2 win Friday.
Unfortunately, Machi's win pace has slowed down, a trend that figures to continue as he enters more games with leads due to Santiago Casilla's absence. He's been remarkably value with his five wins, two saves and 0.37 ERA so far, but as much as we like him, he's not going to keep up this pace.

Tue May 6 201401:09Jean Machi notches fifth win in relief
Jean Machi earned his fifth win in relief after pitching two scoreless innings as the Giants beat the Pirates 11-10 in 13 innings on Monday.
It was the first time since 2004 that the Pirates had scored 10 runs and lost. Machi not only pitched well, as usual, but he helped his own cause with a terrific bunt in the top of the 13th. He busted it down the line, too, which may have caused Jared Hughes' errant throw that allowed Hunter Pence to score from second. In truth, the bunt was good enough that Machi could have been awarded a hit. However, it was ruled an error instead. Worse, when Machi took second moments later, it was ruled defensive indifference instead of steal. Oh well, at least Machi has his five wins. No one in either league has more.
