Gomes is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins.

Although manager Fredi Gonzalez had said that Gomes would not be in a strict platoon in left field to start the year, he did make it clear that Gomes would sit sometimes against especially tough right-handers. Kelly Johnson, who bats lefty but has posted a reverse platoon split in his career, will get the start in left and bat sixth against Henderson Alvarez.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez reiterated Thursday that he will not employ a strict platoon in left field this season, MLB.com reports. "You pick your spots with kind of like soft platoon," Gonzalez said. "You pick your best eight [position players] every single day. Some days, you go with a matchup. Sometimes you feel that even though he's right-handed [and you're facing a right-hander], if you feel like he can give you some good at-bats, you go with it. For me, it's not a strict platoon situation. We'll play it by ear."

Apparently, Gonzalez is still leaning toward using Gomes as his primary option in left, despite the overwhelming evidence to suggest the team would be better off with a more strict platoon split. Gomes' OPS against right-handed pitching plummeted to .510 last season, and over the past three years, he's mustered just a .670 mark, more than 160 points below his OPS against lefties (.837). Granted, the platoon options are entirely underwhelming, but if Gomes doesn't prove more productive against right-handers, may be forced to give more starts to either Zoilo Almonte, Kelly Johnson, Joe Terdoslavich or Todd Cunningham.

Gomes went 0-for-2 with an RBI and a strikeout in the Braves' Grapefruit League opener Wednesday against the Mets.

An undisclosed injury slowed Gomes a bit during the first week of camp, but evidently it was nothing serious, as he was on the field for the team's first spring game. He served as the DH on Wednesday, but Gomes is expected to be deployed in a sort of "soft" during the regular season, seeing starts against lefties as well as some opportunities against right-handers.

Gomes is dealing with an undisclosed injury, could play a week into spring training games and is expected to be ready for Opening Day, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The deal is said to also include a vesting option for 2016. Gomes finished last season with just a .657 OPS in 112 games between Boston and Oakland, but he's a career .277/.376/.485 hitter against left-handed pitching. The 34-year-old figures to at least take on a short-end platoon role in left field at the start of next season, if he doesn't claim the starting job outright.

Gomes was removed from the lineup for Saturday's game against the Rangers, according to MLB.com's Jane Lee.

Gomes was in the original lineup for the A's, but the Rangers scratched lefty Derek Holland (head) and are now starting righty Scott Baker, so A's manager Bob Melvin switched from a righty-heavy lineup to a lefty-heavy one. Gomes was replaced in left field by Brandon Moss.

In his first game with the Athletics, Gomes had two hits, drove in two runs and scored once in four at-bats Saturday against the Royals.

Gomes, who was traded Thursday from Boston along with Jon Lester in exchange for Yoenis Cespedes, will most likely only be used against left-handed pitchers. This season, Gomes is hitting .302 against lefties and just .151 against right-handers, but manager Billie Bean is sure to get him in the lineup when the matchup is favorable.

Gomes -- who was batting just .234/.329/.354 in 78 games this season for Boston and can become a free agent this winter -- is somewhat of a throw-in to this big Lester-for-Cespedes blockbuster deal. But the 33-year-old corner outfielder can rake left-handers and gives a nice boost to the A's bench. Stephen Vogt benefits most from the Cespedes departure.

In the final season of his two-year contract, Gomes will just be a rental for the Athletics, who have their sights set on a World Series run. He'll give the team some right-handed power off the bench and will likely join the lineup when the Athletics face left-handed starters.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Royals have "backed off" Jonny Gomes.

The concern is that Gomes is limited to left field or the designated hitter spot, while the Royals are looking for someone who can play right field. Josh Willingham is also not a fit with Kansas City for the same reason. Gomes is making $5 million and will be a free agent after the season.

Kansas City is searching for a right-handed bat and Gomes, who will be a free agent this winter, should be one of the easier ones to get. He's batting just .234 with a .680 OPS in 67 total games this season, but the 33-year-old owns a career .266/.351/.461 slash line against left-handed pitching.

Gomes had just given the Red Sox a huge lift with a pinch-hit two-run homer to tie the game in the top half of the inning. The Rays struck back for five in the bottom half though, and many Red Sox including Gomes took exception to Yunel Escobar swiping third base up 8-3 in the seventh inning. He charged in from left field to have words with him which started the incident.

Gomes brought the Red Sox back within three runs with his two-run blast off of J.A. Happ, his fourth of the year. The outfielder has been reliable for his club a year after helping them to a championship. Gomes is slashing .256/.343/.444 with 18 RBI.

David Ross, who caught the first game, will also take a seat against right-hander Chris Archer. Grady Sizemore will make the start in left field while A.J. Pierzynski will catch Felix Doubront.

Gomes batted leadoff for the first time since 2007 last Thursday and he's doing it again Tuesday with left-hander Martin Perez on the hill for Texas. Grady Sizemore will start in center while Jackie Bradley, Jr. plays right.
