C Carlos Ruiz caught RHP Aaron Nola for the first time in Sunday's 8-7 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The veteran's presence didn't help Nola, who was bombed for five runs on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings. But Ruiz did aid in Philadelphia's comeback from a 5-1 deficit, contributing RBI singles in the fourth and eighth innings.

C Carlos Ruiz worked his 1,000th career game behind the plate, becoming just the fourth player in Phillies history to catch that many games. C Carlos Ruiz, 37, returned to the lineup Saturday after sitting out the last two games. Mackanin said Ruiz, who started 81 games in 2015 after undergoing off-season surgery on his left shoulder following the 2014 season, will continue to have his workload monitored.

C Carlos Ruiz, 37, could be entering his final season, as his three-year, $26 million contract expires in November and it seems certain the Phillies will pay the $500,000 buyout on his $4.5 million team option. Ruiz figures to be the backup to C Cameron Rupp this season after hitting a career-worst .211 with two home runs in 86 games in 2015.

Interim manager Pete Mackanin said Cameron Rupp could see more playing time in September at the expense of Ruiz, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Rupp started 17 times in August which was six more starts than Carlos Ruiz received. It sounds like Ruiz may see even less action this month. He has hit just .216/.297/.294 with two home runs in 255 at-bats this season.
Sun Aug 2 201512:09Ruiz out of lineup Sunday against Braves for third straight game
Ruiz is out of the lineup Sunday against the Braves for a third straight game, Stephen Gross of The Morning Call reports.
Ruiz had been stuck in a timeshare at the catcher spot with Cameron Rupp, but it now appears he may have lost the starting job outright. Rupp hasn't been impressive offensively this season, but neither has Ruiz, who is nearly a decade older and possesses less upside at this point. While the newly acquired Jorge Alfaro is the Phillies' long-term future behind the plate, look for the team to give Rupp increased reps in the second half to see if he can at least prove himself as a short-term placeholder until Alfaro is ready in 2016. Ruiz's fantasy value should only continue to decline as a result.
Sat Jul 11 201508:01Ruiz 3-4 with solo home run in Friday's loss to Giants
Ruiz went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's loss to the Giants.
The home run was Ruiz's second of the season and the multi-hit game was his second in four starts. He might possibly earn a little more playing time if his bat heats up, but the Phillies will still give Cameron Rupp a healthy share of the starts behind the plate as they look to the future.

Ruiz went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and walk in Tuesday's loss to the Brewers.
The home run was Ruiz's first of the season and first since Sept. 5. He is hitting .221/.293/.273 in 172 at-bats. The Phillies will likely continue to split his playing time fairly evenly with Cameron Rupp.

Ruiz is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Nationals, Stephen Gross of The Morning Call reports.
The Phillies will go with Cameron Rupp behind the dish for the first game of Sunday's double dip, but expect to see Ruiz out there for the nightcap. Ruiz is scheduled to catch Severino Gonzalez in that contest.
Tue Jun 23 201515:33Ruiz not in lineup for Tuesday's game against Yankees
Ruiz is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Yankees, the Philadelphia Daily News' Ryan Lawrence reports.
Cameron Rupp will get a third consecutive start behind the plate as Ruiz's playing time continues to dry up. The veteran wasn't doing anything with his at-bats, and he now seems to be in danger of sliding into a backup role.
Sun Jun 21 201512:04Ruiz out of Sunday's lineup against Cardinals
Ruiz is out of Sunday's lineup against the Cardinals, CSN Philadelphia reports.
Ruiz continues to receive consistent days off due to his poor play, now sitting the third time in the last five games. The veteran backstop is hitting just .139 in the month of June, and has yet to steal a base or hit a home run this season. Cameron Rupp will start behind the plate in his place again Sunday, batting seventh for the Phillies.
Fri Jun 19 201514:41Ruiz out of lineup Friday against Cardinals
Ruiz is out of the lineup Friday against the Cardinals, Stephen Gross of the Philadelphia Morning Call reports.
Ruiz is starting to lose more playing time to Cameron Rupp, who has fared marginally better than his veteran counterpart in the batter's box this season. Although Ruiz can still be considered the starter, his feeble production is comparable to what most backup catchers produce. He still hasn't homered or stolen a base, and is on pace for just 26 RBI and 26 runs in 379 at-bats.
Wed Jun 17 201515:34Ruiz out of lineup Wednesday
Ruiz is out of the lineup Wednesday, the Morning Call's Stephen Gross reports.
Ruiz is still the Phillies' primary catcher, getting the nod behind the plate in five of the team's last eight games. Unfortunately he is slugging just .269 on the season, limiting his usefulness in most formats. Cameron Rupp will get the start behind the dish and hit sixth.
Mon Jun 15 201516:13Ruiz out of lineup Monday against Orioles
Ruiz is out of the lineup Monday against the Orioles, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
Ruiz continues to struggle at the plate, going 1-for-8 between Saturday and Sunday to drop his season average to .237. The duties behind the plate seem to be evening out between he and Cameron Rupp, as Rupp will once again start behind the plate Monday, batting eighth for the Phillies.
Fri Jun 12 201516:49Ruiz out of lineup for second straight game Friday against Pirat...
Ruiz is out of the lineup for the second straight game Friday against the Pirates.
The reason for Ruiz's absence is a bit unclear, but the Phillies will turn to Cameron Rupp behind the plate for a second straight game. However, Ruiz should continue as the Phillies' primary catcher barring an undisclosed injury of some sort.
Sun Jun 7 201512:06Ruiz not in lineup Sunday against Giants
Ruiz is not in the lineup Sunday against the Giants, Ryan Miller of NJ.com reports.
Ruiz will take a seat for a regular maintenance day, as is typical Sunday afternoons. Cameron Rupp will man the backstop in his stead.
