Mon May 23 201615:57Pirates RHP Vogelsong hit in face, carted off
PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong was hit on the left side of his face by a pitch from Colorado Rockies right-hander Jordan Lyles in the second inning Monday and left the game.Vogelsong was struck near his left eye -- the ball may have glanced off slightly off his batter's helmet -- by a 92-mph two-seam fastball and immediately dropped to the ground. Home plate umpire Jeff Nelson quickly waved to the Pirates' bench for assistance.A trainer applied a towel on the left side of Vogelsong's face, which appeared to be bloody. The right-hander remained in the batters' box for several minutes, and he was slightly off balance as he clutched the towel to his face while getting into a cart to be taken off the field.Vogelsong, making his second spot start of the season because of a rainout Sunday, gave up two hits and no runs in his two innings of work.Nelson himself left the game in the Pirates' half of the third after the umpire was struck near his left eye during a play at the plate in which Francisco Cervelli was thrown out on a grounder to third. As Rockies catcher Tony Wolters turned after making the tag, Nelson grabbed his face near his eye and began walking down the first base line in obvious discomfort. Nelson apparently was somehow struck by debris in the eye during the play.Nelson was treated immediately by the Pirates' medical staff, but after a delay of several minutes, left the field and first base umpire Ben May replaced him behind the plate.

RHP Ryan Vogelsong made his first start of the season, pressed into duty when LHP Francisco Liriano was scratched because of a strained right hamstring and pitched well in a no-decision as the Pirates lost 7-3 to Detroit. The 38-year-old allowed one run and five hits in five innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. The Pirates signed Vogelsong to a one-year, $2 million contact as a free agent in the offseason. He began the season as a long reliever after losing out to LHP Jeff Locke and RHP Juan Nicasio in a three-way competition for two rotation spots in spring training. It marked the first time Vogelsong faced the Tigers since Game 3 of the 2012 World Series, when he pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the San Francisco Giants for the win at Detroit. The Giants swept the series. "I'm confident in what I do and what I can do and what I still have left in the tank," Vogelsong said. "To me age is just a number. I know people talk about how old I am and how long I've been around but I feel a lot younger than my numbers say."
