Red Sox acquired RHP Clayton Mortensen from the Rockies for INF Marco Scutaro.
The trade freed up nearly $6 million in payroll, and will allow the Boston front office to make a hard push for one of the remaining free agent starters. Mortensen isn't much of a prize, having posted a rough 5.12 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 95 career innings pitched. He will function as rotation depth for the Red Sox.

The Rockies are considering minor league right-handers Clayton Mortensen or Alan Johnson to start Sunday's game against the Cubs.

Tue Mar 15 201116:10Rockies option three to minors
Rockies optioned RHP Clayton Mortensen, C Mike McKenry and INF Chris Nelson to minor league camp.
This is actually pretty significant, because it officially takes Mortensen out of the mix to be the Rockies' fifth starter to begin the season. Esmil Rogers, Greg Reynolds and John Maine are the remaining candidates. With McKendry being sent down, this also means that Jordan Pacheco has a legitimate chance to make the Opening Day roster.
