Fri May 13 201110:21David Pauley settling into relief role
David Pauley has been fantastic out of the bullpen for the Mariners this season, posting a 1.16 ERA and 0.77 WHIP over an AL-leading 23 2/3 relief innings.
Pauley's key has been going after hitters and avoiding walks. "I'm just doing what I do best; being aggressive with hitters with my pitches, keeping the ball down and trying to get outs quickly in the count," Pauley said. Said manager Eric Wedge, "He knows how to pitch. He knows what he wants to do, how he wants to approach each hitter, and he prepares for it. He's done a hell of a job for us." Pauley was never anything special as a starter, but it appears he might have found his niche as a middle reliever.

Sun Oct 3 201002:41Mariners' Pauley allows three homers in loss
David Pauley surrendered four runs in seven innings Saturday in a loss to the A's.
Jack Cust, Chris Carter and Mark Ellis all homered off Pauley, who finishes 4-9 with a 4.07 ERA. Safeco made him resemble a major league pitcher, but it doesn't figure that the Mariners will include him as more than a fallback in their plans for next season.
Mon Sep 27 201023:10Pauley has another solid outing for M's
David Pauley limited the Rangers to two runs over six innings in a 7-5 win Monday.
He surrendered eight hits, walked two and struck out three. Pauley boasts a 2.92 ERA over his last four starts and lowered his ERA and WHIP on the season to 3.98 and 1.35, respectively. He's likely pitched well enough to be under consideration for a starting spot next year. The righty will face the A's in his final outing.
Wed Sep 15 201021:43Pauley remains consistently mediocre
David Pauley yielded two runs -- one earned -- over six innings against the Red Sox Wednesday night as he well to 2-8.
Pauley hasn't given up more than four earned runs in any of his last eight starts, but he's 2-5 over that span. So goes life when you pitch for the Mariners. Seattle's ballpark keeps Pauley consistently mediocre, but he's only on the radar in the deepest of AL-only leagues.
Fri Aug 13 201022:00Pauley earns first ML win vs. Indians
David Pauley allowed two runs over six innings in a 3-2 win over the Indians on Friday night.
It's been a long wait, but he finally got that first major league win out of the way. Pauley scattered seven hits and a hit-by-pitch while striking out five and walking none. He has been surprisingly effective a starting pitcher this season, posting a 3.81 ERA in six starts. He could have some AL-only value against the Orioles next week.
Thu Jul 29 201023:42Pauley knocked around by White Sox
David Pauley lasted only 2 2/3 innings Thursday, giving up four runs in the loss to Chicago.
He allowed six hits, walked two and struck out none. Pauley had been surprisingly effective in his three prior starts, but he was due for an outing like this. If the team chooses to give him another starts, Pauley's next outing will come against either the Rangers or Royals.
Sun Jul 25 201001:45Mariners' Pauley solid versus Red Sox
David Pauley yielded one run in 5 2/3 innings Saturday versus the Red Sox.
A strong outing against the team Pauley debuted with in 2006. Pauley wasn't involved in the decision, so he remains 0-2 through three starts and three relief appearances. He has a nice 2.18 ERA, though. It's only because of Safeco and the Mariners defense, but he might have a little value in AL-only leagues.
Fri Jul 16 201023:57Pauley to start vs. White Sox on Monday
Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said that David Pauley will start against the White Sox on Monday.
"If we need to use him today, he can give us an inning in an emergency, but he will start in the Monday game," said Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu. "A lot of it had to do with his last performance. Sitting on that slot and just giving him an opportunity to pitch. I thought he did a nice job last time and deserves another shot." Pauley allowed one run over five innings against the Yankees as a last-minute replacement for Cliff Lee last Friday. While it's nice to see him rewarded with another opportunity, he shouldn't be owned in any fantasy league.

Fri Jul 9 201018:23Pauley to start vs. Yanks on Friday
With Cliff Lee on his way to Texas, right-hander David Pauley will start against the Yankees on Friday night.
It would have been a tough assignment for top prospect Michael Pineda to make his major league debut, so it's probably a good thing they used some restraint. Pauley has tossed four scoreless innings over three appearances since being called up from the minors late last month. The 27-year-old right-hander has an 8.35 ERA over 12 appearances (five starts) in the big leagues.
