Mon Sep 5 201122:28Vazquez breezes by Mets
Javier Vazquez held the Mets to just one run on six hits in seven innings on Monday, improving to 9-11 in Florida's 9-3 victory at home.
He struck out seven and walked none. Vazquez has come on strong after getting off to a disastrous start this season, and is now 4-3 with a 2.89 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 67/13 K/BB ratio in 65 1/3 innings since the All-Star break. He'll get the Nationals in Washington on Friday.

Wed Aug 24 201119:00Javier Vazquez strikes out 11 Reds
Javier Vazquez struck out a season-high 11 batters while allowing three runs in seven innings Wednesday versus the Reds.
Vazquez has turned in six straight quality starts, though he has just one win to show for it. He left a tie game today, so he remained 7-11 for the season. Nevertheless, he's throwing very well at the moment, and with his velocity better than it's been since the beginning of last year, there's good reason to think it will continue.

Fri Aug 12 201116:43Vazquez to start Saturday vs. Giants
Updating a previous item, Javier Vazquez will indeed start Saturday against the Giants.
All went well with Vazquez's wife's surgery, so he'll be able to make Saturday's start after all. The Marlins initially intended to push him back to next week. Chris Volstad, who was going to start in his place Saturday, will go on Sunday.

Fri Aug 12 201116:25Vazquez won't pitch Saturday vs. Giants
Javier Vazquez won't pitch Saturday against the Giants due to a family emergency in his native Puerto Rico.
Vazquez left the team during this week's series against the Braves. He is expected to make his next start Wednesday against the Rockies. The recently-recalled Chris Volstad will start in his place Saturday.

Wed Jul 27 201123:16Vazquez spins seven innings of one-run ball
Javier Vazquez spun seven innings of one-run ball, giving up six hits, in Wednesday's win against the Nationals.
He struck out four and walked three. Vazquez put together a nice six-start string (1.69 ERA) that lowered his ERA from 7.09 to 5.14 prior to getting tagged for five runs in 4 1/3 innings by the Padres in a loss Thursday. He returned to good graces this evening in a nice matchup. Vazquez gets the Mets next week.

Thu Jul 21 201117:57Javier Vazquez gets hit hard by Padres
Javier Vazquez was tagged for five runs in 4 1/3 innings by the Padres in a loss Thursday.
Vazquez had put together a nice six-start string that lowered his ERA from 7.09 to 5.14, but while it may not have been a mirage, his stuff still isn't what it was a couple of years ago. He'll probably remain more bad than good going forward.

Mon Jul 18 201114:03Report: Marlins taking calls on pitchers
The Marlins will consider trading Javier Vazquez, Leo Nunez and Randy Choate, but won't discuss Ricky Nolasco, Anibal Sanchez or Josh Johnson, according to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.
Vazquez has an impressive 1.69 ERA over his last six starts after a rough start to the season. It's unlikely that an AL team would give up much to get him, however. "I think he gets hives when he even flies over an AL city," a scout said. Nunez is 26-for-29 in save situations this season. A trade would kill his fantasy value, however, as he'd likely move into a setup role.

Sat Jul 16 201116:04Vazquez strikes out 10 in win over Cubs
Javier Vazquez continued his resurgence Saturday by allowing three runs over seven innings and striking out a season-high 10 in a blowout win against the Cubs.
It was his first start with double-digit strikeouts since June 11, 2009 with the Braves. His lone mistake was a three-run homer by Aramis Ramirez in the sixth. Vazquez now has an impressive 1.69 ERA over his last six starts. We could hear his name in trade rumors in the coming days, but he's a must-start with a matchup against the Padres next week.

Fri Jul 8 201122:03Vazquez pitches well again
Javier Vazquez continues to turn things around Friday, limiting the Astros to two runs on six hits while striking out four over seven innings in the 6-3 win.
After looking earlier in the season like he should be designated for assignment, Vazquez has suddenly righted the ship, allowing just six runs over his last five starts while boasting a 19/3 K/BB ratio. He recently credited his turnaround with the fact that he's using his lower half in his delivery more. Hey, whatever's working, Javy. The veteran right-hander will bring a still-awful 5.42 ERA and 1.51 WHIP into the All-Star break.

Sat Jul 2 201112:38Javier Vazquez pitching better
Javier Vazquez credits his recent success to using the lower half of his body more in his delivery.
Pitching coach Randy St. Claire pointed out to Vazquez in late May that he could be using his lower half more, and although the adjustment didn't pay off right away, the right-hander has allowed just two runs over his past 17 1/3 innings while boasting a 12/2 K/BB ratio. "It hasn't meant better results because I had some really bad games during that stretch," Vazquez said. "But the life of my fastball is back, and I feel a lot better." We're not ready to call him a mixed league option again yet, but his recent results are certainly encouraging.

Wed Jun 29 201101:44Vazquez spins seven innings of one-run ball
Javier Vazquez spun seven innings of one-run ball, giving up just three hits hits, in Tuesday's tough-luck 1-0 loss to the A's.
The run was unearned, making it the second straight start that Vazquez hasn't allowed an earned run. He's actually on a hot streak, allowing just two earned runs in his last three starts, covering 17 1/3 innings. Vazquez racked up 109 pitches in this one despite not walking a batter and striking out five. He takes on the Rangers on Sunday.

Tue Jun 21 201122:34Vazquez spins 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball
Javier Vazquez spun 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball despite giving up 10 hits in Tuesday's win against the Angels.
Vazquez racked up 98 pitches despite not walking a batter. He struck out four. Over his last two starts, he's given up only two runs in 10 1/3 innings. Progress is progress for a pitcher whose ERA hovered over 7.00 for most of the year. He's 4-7 with a 6.37 ERA and will take those numbers into an advantageous matchup on the road against Oakland next week.

Thu Jun 16 201115:39Javier Vazquez loses to Phillies
Javier Vazquez yielded two runs in five innings Thursday in a loss to the Phillies.
Vazquez gave up eight hits and walked two in his five innings, so he had to pitch out of some jams to get away having allowing just two runs. Still, this one was a whole lot better than his last two starts. At least his ERA is back down under 7.00 again.

Mon Jun 6 201122:18Vazquez struggles against Brewers
Javier Vazquez got roughed up by the Brewers on Monday evening, allowing six runs on eight hits in just four innings of a Marlins loss.
After letting Ryan Braun tag him for an RBI single in the first, Vazquez served up a three-run bomb to Prince Fielder in the third. A very disappointing night, since Vazquez had appeared to finally be getting on track in his past three outings. He has now allowed six or more runs five times in 12 starts this season.

Wed Jun 1 201123:39Vazquez done in by poor finish
Javier Vazquez allowed four runs on six hits in six innings of Florida's loss to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Vazquez cruised through five scoreless innings of work before allowing three runs in the sixth and one before being yanked in the seventh. Ryan Roberts took him deep for a two-run shot in the sixth. He did manage to post a 5/0 K/BB ratio, making tonight the first time all season he did not issue a free pass. Over his past three starts, Vazquez has a posted a solid 2.84 ERA, something that seemed unimaginable when his season ERA rested at 7.55 on May 15.

Sat May 28 201100:58Javier Vazquez allows two runs in six innings
Javier Vazquez gave the Marlins a second straight solid outing Friday, yielding two runs and three hits in six innings against the Dodgers.
He served up home run balls to James Loney and Andre Ethier, but the Dodgers did nothing else against him. If Vazquez can just turn out to be a 4.50-ERA guy for the Marlins, the team should be thankful.

Sat May 21 201119:18Vazquez blanks Rays over seven innings
Javier Vazquez hurled seven shutout frames in a 5-3 win over the Rays on Saturday.
It goes without saying, but this was easily his best start of the season. Vazquez gave up only three hits all day while notching a season-high seven strikeouts and walking a pair. More importantly, he averaged slightly over 90 mph on his fastball, which is a huge difference from what we've seen so far this season. We wouldn't buy quite yet in fantasy leagues, but his next start against the Dodgers bares watching.

Sat May 21 201110:12Vazquez likely to stay in rotation
Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez indicated that Javier Vazquez is likely to remain in the rotation for the long haul despite his struggles.
"We need to establish and solidify that rotation," Rodriguez said. "And without him in the rotation, we don't have many options. He's going to have to step up, make adjustments, because that rotation, the one we send out there, that's the one we plan on using. We're going to stay with that rotation and see how far it takes us." We can't imagine the Marlins giving Vazquez, who owns a 7.55 ERA and 20/24 K/BB ratio, too many more chances, but they evidently don't like their alternatives at Triple-A.

Sun May 15 201118:23Rodriguez: Struggling Vazquez to start Friday
Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said that Javier Vazquez will make his next start Friday against Tampa Bay.
Vazquez allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks Sunday over four innings in Florida's 8-4 loss to the Nationals, raising his ERA to 7.55. "I'm doing my best," Vazquez said. "Believe me, man. I'm doing my best, but nothing's working, nothing's working. Nothing. Absolutely nothing." If Vazquez is bombed again on Friday, the Fish may not have a choice but to replace him in the rotation. Jay Buente, Tom Koehler and Elih Villanueva are replacement options at Triple-A New Orleans.

Thu May 5 201100:02Vazquez again lousy, but Marlins win
The Marlins beat the Cardinals 8-6 on Wednesday, but no thanks to starter Javier Vazquez, who allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings of work.
He struck out two. Vazquez now owns a 6.39 ERA and 1.81 WHIP through his first 31 innings of work, and has shown very few signs of getting on track in his past few outings. He is not worth owning in most mixed leagues.
