Bonifacio (oblique) will begin his rehab assignment Tuesday at Triple-A Charlotte, Doug Padilla of ESPN Chicago reports.
Bonifacio landed on the disabled list Jul. 29 due to a strained left oblique, so while starting his rehab assignment Tuesday may not bode well for a return from the DL when he's immediately eligible (Aug. 12), he is certainly nearing a return. It remains to be seen how many at-bats and innings the White Sox want Bonifacio to log at Triple-A before activating the speedy utility player.

Bonifacio picked up his first steal of the season in the White Sox's win over the Cubs on Friday.
Bonifacio has posted 20+ steal totals in in all but one of his six seasons in the big leagues, but he is far off that pace in his seventh professional season. He has fallen into a deep reserve role on the South Side, rarely starting and only occasionally appearing as an in-game sub. As such, he only has five steal attempts through 42 games played. As a comparison, he played 41 games in the second half for Atlanta last year and had 14 steal attempts (12 successes).

Bonifacio will start at second base and bat ninth Tuesday against the Indians.
Bonifacio saw just one at-bat during the season's first week, but manager Robin Ventura will get the 29-year-old his first start of the year Tuesday with Micah Johnson on the bench against right-hander Carlos Carrasco. Bonifacio finished the spring with a slash line of .130/.230/.222 in 23 games.
It was a rough spring at the plate for Bonifacio, but he still figures to serve as the team's primary backup option at all three spots in the outfield. He was also in competition for the starting second baseman job in the spring, a role that went to Micah Johnson, so Bonifacio figures to see the majority of his at bats this season in a reserve role.

Bonifacio is slated to serve as the White Sox's top backup at all three outfield spots this season, ESPNChicago.com's Doug Padilla reports.
In addition, Bonifacio will receive the opportunity to compete for the starting second base job and has seen action at third base and shortstop in the past, though he's graded out as average-to-below-average defensively as an infielder over his career. Instead, Bonifacio's speed and ranginess makes him more ideal as a backup in the outfield, where he'll likely be tasked with stepping in for Melky Cabrera or Avisail Garcia as a late-inning defensive replacement. With a reserve role likely awaiting him this season if he fails to lock down the second base gig, Bonifacio looks like a long shot to log 400 plate appearances again, which figures to result in a decrease in his stolen base total for the fourth consecutive season.

Bonifacio has agreed to a one-year, $4 million contract with the White Sox, according to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports.
The White Sox will likely use Bonifacio as their starting second baseman to begin the season, but he could shift into a utility role if Carlos Sanchez or Leury Garcia prove to be better suited for the starting spot. After a red-hot start to the season with the Cubs in 2014, Bonifacio cooled off and was eventually traded to Atlanta. A career .262/.319/.341 hitter, he'll continue to derive most of his value from steals, after going 26-for-32 over 110 games last season.

Bonifacio elected free agency.
A trade deadline rental, Bonifacio hit just .212/.273/.280 in 41 games with Atlanta as the Braves faded from relevance down the stretch. While he had a very good first month and still has ample speed, Bonifacio could find himself back in a utility role to open 2015.

Bonifacio will start in center field and bat leadoff Saturday against the Rangers.
A changing of the guard may be taking place in Atlanta, as Bonifacio is set to start over B.J. Upton in center for the fourth time in six games. However, Bonifacio has failed to make the most of his increased opportunities, with just one hit in 16 at-bats so far this month, and manager Fredi Gonzalez may be inclined to just go with a timeshare at the position. Moreover, Jason Heyward, who is batting fifth Saturday, seems likely to continue leading off most days.

Bonifacio went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI and stolen base in Thursday's 6-1 win over the Mets.
Bonifacio, who batted second, returned to the lineup, after sitting Wednesday. His performance Thursday was easily his best as a Brave, and could propel him into the starting lineup more often, at least in the short term.
Wed Aug 13 201415:49Bonifacio out of lineup Wednesday against Dodgers
Bonifacio is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers.
Bonifacio has worked his way into the starting lineup for six of the last seven games, but will take a seat Wednesday for what looks to be a regular day off. With Andrelton Simmons back in action for the Braves, there's also one less infield spot available for the utility player to take over. Bonifacio is 8-for-31 at the dish with three steals since coming over to Atlanta.
