Wed Feb 2 201108:59Schlereth to be Tigers' lefty specialist
Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said that the thinks Daniel Schlereth can replace Phil Coke as the team's left-handed specialist.
"I think Daniel Schlereth can do that," said Dombrowski. "We liked what we saw last year. Now, he can do more than that. He can get righties and lefties. He's got a left-handed breaking ball and an above-average fastball. But he can get out anybody, really." The 24-year-old right-hander posted a 2.89 ERA and 19/10 K/BB ratio over 18 2/3 innings with the Tigers last season. Though his command has been an issue, the former 2008 first-round pick has proven very effective against left-handed batters in the minor leagues. The Tigers also have Brad Thomas on their 40-man roster, though the team views him as a long reliever and/or emergency starter.

Tigers recalled LHP Daniel Schlereth from Triple-A Toledo.
The 24-year-old Schlereth allowed only one earned run in four relief appearances for the Tigers earlier this year. If he can improve his control, Schlereth has a shot to be a closer in the big leagues someday. For now, he'll work in middle relief.

Tigers recalled LHP Daniel Schlereth from Triple-A Toledo.
Schlereth compiled a 2.83 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 28 relief appearances with the Mud Hens this season, posting a 45/26 K/BB ratio over 35 innings. The 24-year-old left-hander was acquired from the Diamondbacks in the three-way trade that sent Curtis Granderson to the Yankees. Schlereth put up a 5.89 ERA over 21 appearances in his first taste of the majors with the Diamondbacks last season. It's a rarity, but if he can work out his control issues, he has a chance to be a left-handed closer in the big leagues.
