Wed Feb 2 2011 | 08:59 | Schlereth to be Tigers' lefty specialist |
Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said that the thinks Daniel Schlereth can replace Phil Coke as the team's left-handed specialist. |
"I think Daniel Schlereth can do that," said Dombrowski. "We liked what we saw last year. Now, he can do more than that. He can get righties and lefties. He's got a left-handed breaking ball and an above-average fastball. But he can get out anybody, really." The 24-year-old right-hander posted a 2.89 ERA and 19/10 K/BB ratio over 18 2/3 innings with the Tigers last season. Though his command has been an issue, the former 2008 first-round pick has proven very effective against left-handed batters in the minor leagues. The Tigers also have Brad Thomas on their 40-man roster, though the team views him as a long reliever and/or emergency starter. |

The 24-year-old Schlereth allowed only one earned run in four relief appearances for the Tigers earlier this year. If he can improve his control, Schlereth has a shot to be a closer in the big leagues someday. For now, he'll work in middle relief. |

Tigers recalled LHP Daniel Schlereth from Triple-A Toledo. |
Schlereth compiled a 2.83 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 28 relief appearances with the Mud Hens this season, posting a 45/26 K/BB ratio over 35 innings. The 24-year-old left-hander was acquired from the Diamondbacks in the three-way trade that sent Curtis Granderson to the Yankees. Schlereth put up a 5.89 ERA over 21 appearances in his first taste of the majors with the Diamondbacks last season. It's a rarity, but if he can work out his control issues, he has a chance to be a left-handed closer in the big leagues. |
