TORONTO (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays simply couldn't touch Toronto reliever Thomas Pannone.Pannone became the 89th different pitcher in major league history to strike out the side on nine pitches, setting down the Rays in the fifth inning Sunday. The 24-year-old lefty fanned a swinging Avisail Garcia, then caught Brandon Lowe and Daniel Robertson looking at strike three.Pannone became the third Toronto pitcher to accomplish the feat, joining Roger Clemens (1997) and Steve Delabar (2013).Pannone wound up pitching three innings and struck out four without allowing a runner in Toronto's 8-4 loss.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Detroit left-hander Matt Moore will undergo surgery this week to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. The Tigers said Sunday they won't have a definite timetable for Moore's return until after Wednesday's scheduled procedure in Dallas, although Moore said he's hoping for a recovery time of four to six weeks.Moore hurt the knee on April 6 when he left in the third inning of his start against Kansas City. Since then, he said, he's had two setbacks."I know I have a tear in my meniscus, it's just the severity of it I think is a little bit unknown right now," Moore said before Sunday's game at Minnesota. "It's when he gets in there, and that's when I guess they make those decisions. He can only fix what he can see and right now they can't really tell enough through the MRI to tell me exactly which type of repair they're going to have to do."Moore was off to a promising start after signing a one-year deal with the Tigers in the offseason. He hasn't allowed an earned run in 10 innings, with nine strikeouts and a single walk.Moore said the surgery will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister."It wasn't like this sharp pain or nothing like that, but the instability kind of told me that it might not be in our control to let this heal up on its own during the season," he said.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees' stunning injury list grew again Friday, and things are only getting worse for a few of the players already on it.General manager Brian Cashman said right-handed reliever Dellin Betances will get a cortisone shot in his right shoulder Saturday, which will keep him out another 6 to 7 weeks. That came hours catcher Gary Sánchez became the 12th New York player added to the IL with a strained left calf.Betances opened the season on the IL after dealing with inflammation in his shoulder during spring training. Cashman said after a rain-shortened 9-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox that oral anti-inflammatories did not solve the issue, a determination made after Betances struggled through a simulated game Thursday.Betances had an MRI on Friday that showed inflammation centered around a bone spur in the back of his shoulder. NEW YORK (AP) — Gary Sánchez was as startled as anybody by the news announced Friday. The Yankees catcher has a strained left calf and became the 12th New York player on the injured list, a day after a precautionary MRI revealed the injury.Right-handed reliever Dellin Betances, another member of that achy dozen, returned to New York on Friday to visit a doctor after his simulated game Thursday did not go well. Betances is dealing with a right shoulder issue.Sánchez said through a translator that he was "surprised" by the MRI result, believing the tightness he felt in his calf this week wouldn't require him to miss more time. He was held out of the starting lineup Wednesday at Houston and struck out as a pinch-hitter. He said he felt fine after that game.He had the MRI during a day off Thursday, and the Yankees decided the strain was severe enough to warrant placing him on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Thursday. Sánchez hopes to return when he's eligible. Manager Aaron Boone said Sánchez... [More]

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels star outfielder Mike Trout is day-to-day after straining his right groin during Tuesday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers.Following his team's 11-8 victory, Trout said he first felt discomfort after completing a workout earlier in the day and it flared up as he was running to second base in the second inning. He was removed for Peter Bourjos in the fourth."I went in the outfield (during the third inning) and it felt worse," Trout said. "I didn't want to push it. It is better to take time out than blow it out."Angels manager Brad Ausmus said it was more than likely he would keep Trout out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale. The Angels have Thursday off before beginning a three-game series Friday in Chicago against the Cubs. Considering the chilly forecast for the weekend, Trout could remain out if he's not 100 percent.Trout said he was feeling better, but considering how early it is in the season, he's also aware of taking things...
