Dan Wheeler (calf) threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings Saturday in a rehab outing at Triple-A Pawtucket.

Thu May 5 201112:03Red Sox place RHP Wheeler on DL
Red Sox placed RHP Dan Wheeler on the 15-day disabled list with a right calf strain.
It's not believed to be a serious issue, but Wednesday's extra-inning game forced Boston's hand here. Wheeler, who signed a one-year, $3 million contract with a club option for 2012 over the winter, has an 11.32 ERA over his first 11 appearances this season. This is his first ever trip to the disabled list.

Sat Dec 18 201009:16Report: Dan Wheeler comes to terms w/ Red Sox
According to ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes, Dan Wheeler has agreed to a deal with the Red Sox.
WEEI's Alex Speier reports that the deal is for one year and contains an option for 2012. When will it end? In the last two weeks the Red Sox have traded for Adrian Gonzalez and signed Carl Crawford, Bobby Jenks and now Wheeler. He strengthens a suddenly super deep bullpen and gives the team more protection to deal Jonathan Papelbon if they decide to do so (and can find a willing trade partner). Wheeler posted a 3.35 ERA and 46/16 K/BB ratio over 48 1/3 innings for the Rays this past season.

Fri Dec 17 201014:50Red Sox still talking with Dan Wheeler
According to Alex Speier of WEEI.com, the Red Sox are still talking with free agent reliever Dan Wheeler.
They're not willing to offer him anything greater than a one-year contract, according to Sean McAdam of CSN New England, but the 32-year-old may want a chance at a title and the Red Sox looked primed for a run at one in 2011. The Red Sox are not interest in left-hander Brian Fuentes.

Thu Dec 16 201021:47Red Sox won't give Wheeler multi-year deal
The Red Sox are not willing to give Dan Wheeler anything greater than a one-year deal, according to Sean McAdam of CSN New England.
In this market, where Joaquin Benoit is worth three years and $16.5 million, the 32-year-old Wheeler is probably going to find at least one team willing to offer him a two-year contract. He posted a quality 3.35 ERA and 46/16 K/BB ratio over 48 1/3 innings for the Rays this past season.

Wed Dec 15 201017:09Red Sox in talks with righty Dan Wheeler
Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports that the Red Sox are in "ongoing discussions" with right-handed reliever Dan Wheeler.
Wheeler, 32, posted a decent 3.35 ERA and 46/16 K/BB ratio in 2010 for the Rays, but he worked only 48 1/3 total innings and he does carry some durability concerns. Tampa Bay declined to offer him arbitration this winter and also declined to pick up his $4 million club option for 2011.

Tue Nov 23 201020:31Rays did not offer arbitration to Dan Wheeler
The Rays did not offer arbitration to free agent Dan Wheeler.
The Rays declined Wheeler's $4 million option for 2011 in early November and are hoping to re-sign with him at a lesser price. The 32-year-old had a 3.35 ERA and 46/16 K/BB ratio over 48-plus innings this year and would have been a Type A free agent had the Rays offered him arbitration.

Thu Nov 4 201010:55Rays could look to re-sign Dan Wheeler
According to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times, the Rays could look to re-sign Dan Wheeler at a lower salary.
The Rays made the tough call to decline the $4 million option on Wheeler on Wednesday, despite Rafael Soriano and Joaquin Benoit likely leaving via free agency. "I was a little surprised, but at the same time I wasn't because I understand where they're coming from since they're going to cut salary," said Wheeler. "We talked about keeping the lines of communication open, and I could still be a Ray next year. The way I look at it, I have 30 teams to talk to." Wheeler, 32, posted a 3.35 ERA and 46/16 K/BB ratio over 48 1/3 innings this past season.

Wed Nov 3 201018:14Rays decline option on righty Dan Wheeler
Rays declined RHP Dan Wheeler's $4 million option for 2011.
A tough decision for the Rays. Wheeler, 32, is one of the more rock-solid relievers in the game and finished with a 3.35 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 48 1/3 innings this season. Tampa may try to re-sign him, but the righty will be looking for a fairly lucrative multi-year deal.
Sun Oct 31 201011:27Tampa Bay Rays mulling roster decisions
The Rays will likely wait until the last second before deciding on whether or not to exercise the contract options on Dan Wheeler and Willy Aybar, according to Mark Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times.
They have until three days after the completion of the season. Wheeler's option is for $4 million with a $1 million buyout. Aybar's option calls for $2.2 million with a $275,000 buyout. Topkin also writes that the Rays are unlikely to sign any of their pending free agents -- including Grant Balfour, Joaquin Benoit, Randy Choate -- before they enter the open market five days after the completion of the World Series.

Mon Aug 2 201022:25Wheeler gets save with Soriano unavailable
Dan Wheeler registered his third save of the season Monday, getting the final two outs in the win over the Twins.
He needed to face only one batter, as he got Danny Valencia to ground into a game-ending double play. Rafael Soriano had worked the previous three games, so Wheeler was given the ball tonight. He now has a 2.91 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 9.8 K/9 rate on the season.
Thu Jul 29 201014:55Rays' Wheeler records second save
Dan Wheeler picked up his second save Thursday with two perfect innings against the Tigers.
Rafael Soriano needed the day off after pitching four of the previous five days. Wheeler has picked up just six holds this year, so he's been a disappointment in leagues that count those as a category, but he has usual quality ERA and sterling WHIP. He's at 2.97 and 1.02, respectively, right now.

Tue Jul 20 201010:08Wheeler suffers bruised foot in win over O's
Dan Wheeler suffered a bruised right foot when he was struck with an Adam Jones line drive in Monday's win over the Orioles.
Wheeler was seen limping slightly after the game but underwent X-rays that turned up negative. He has a 3.03 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and 34 strikeouts against nine walks this season in 29 2/3 innings and is considered by the Rays to be "day-to-day." A stint on the disabled list should be avoided.
