Tue May 3 201119:37Edgar Renteria not ready to play 3B yet
Edgar Renteria has been taking ground balls at third base lately, but he doesn't think he's ready to play there in a game yet.
Other than a one-inning appearance at first base back in 2001, Renteria hasn't appeared at a position other than shortstop during his 16-year career. But, with Scott Rolen out, the Reds want to have Renteria ready to play the hot corner if needed. He was actually in the lineup at third before Monday's game was rained out, but he started at shortstop Tuesday. "I know I don't feel comfortable there yet," Renteria said. "It's different between playing and taking ground balls. Maybe I will like it when I play there."

Sat Apr 30 201123:24Renteria hits walkoff RBI in 10th inning
Edgar Renteria hit a walkoff RBI single in the 10th inning of Saturday's 4-3 defeat of the Marlins.
Renteria was serving as a pinch-hitter when he slapped the heroic single. He isn't getting much playing time behind shortstop Paul Janish this season, but the veteran infielder is currently sporting a .333 batting average and .378 on-base percentage through 37 plate appearances.

Edgar Renteria has started at shortstop just once in the Reds' last five games.

Thu Apr 7 201115:42Reds' Renteria goes 3-for-3
Edgar Renteria went 3-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk Thursday against the Astros.
Renteria started over Paul Janish for the second time in six games, even though Janish is off to an 8-for-18 start. It worked out today, but Renteria doesn't figure to earn any additional playing time while Janish is hot.

Sat Mar 19 201119:02Edgar Renteria drives in three, scores three
Edgar Renteria hit a three-run homer and scored three times in four at-bats in Saturday's 10-3 win over the Rockies.
The veteran is hitting .333 in 27 at-bats this spring. Though he came on strong for the Giants in the postseason last year, Renteria has been ineffective the last two years during the regular season. He'll be fine in a reserve role, though, just as long as the Reds don't play him more than they should.

Fri Feb 18 201112:05Renteria fine with being backup to Janish
Edgar Renteria said Friday that he is fine with serving as a backup this season.
"My job is to be ready and help (Paul Janish) the most I can," said the veteran Renteria. He told ESPN Deportes earlier this winter that he was planning on being the Reds' starter at shortstop this season, but that may have been more of a mindset thing. Janish will start and Renteria will get frequent looks behind him.

Mon Jan 10 201117:55Reds finalize contract with Edgar Renteria
Reds signed SS Edgar Renteria to a one-year, $2.1 million contract.
Renteria can reportedly earn another $900,000 in performance-based incentives. The 35-year-old batted just .276/.332/.374 with the Giants last season, though at least he provided some postseason heroics. He is expected to split time at shortstop with Paul Janish this season, limiting his steadily declining fantasy value.
Fri Jan 7 201115:13Baker: Renteria, Janish will split time at SS
Reds manager Dusty Baker said Friday that Edgar Renteria and Paul Janish will split time at shortstop this season.
That's a little better. Renteria told ESPN Deportes on Thursday that he expects to be the "full-time" shortstop in Cincinnati this year, but Janish is probably a more productive all-around player and will get equal time if not more. "We don't have a quarterback controversy at short," said Baker. "Everybody plays on my team. They're both going to play. Janish is younger. Edgar is more experienced. Janish deserves a chance to be my shortstop."

Fri Jan 7 201113:46Renteria to serve as full-time SS in Cincy?
Edgar Renteria told reporters Thursday that he will be the full-time shortstop in Cincinnati this season.
He's certainly being paid like one. According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, Renteria will make $2.1 million in guaranteed salary this season and can earn another $900,000 through performance-based incentives. Now the question becomes: what will the Reds do with the slick-fielding Paul Janish? Renteria batted just .276/.332/.374 last year and has lost a step or two defensively. Most would argue that Janish is a more productive player.

Fri Jan 7 201111:40Renteria to earn $2M via contract with Reds
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Edgar Renteria will make $2 million guaranteed on his one-year pact with the Reds.
Renteria can also earn another $1 million in performance-based bonuses. That might not seem like a lot for a guy who captured the World Series MVP last season, but keep in mind that he will turn 36 in August of 2011 and batted just .276/.332/.374 over 243 at-bats in 2010. The Giants' highest offer to him was for $1 million and did not include performance-based incentives. Renteria will serve as a backup shortstop and second baseman this year for Cincy.

Thu Jan 6 201114:33Report: Reds sign Renteria to 1-year deal
According to Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com, the Reds have signed Edgar Renteria to a one-year contract.
The deal could be worth as much as $3 million with incentives. Renteria shouldn't be a major league regular anymore, so he projects to be the backup to Paul Janish at shortstop and Brandon Phillips at second base. The 35-year-old batted just .276/.332/.374 over 243 at-bats during the regular season last year, but won the World Series MVP with the Giants.

Tue Jan 4 201112:03Giants 're-engaged' talks with Renteria
Mychael Urban of CSN Bay Area reports that the Giants "re-engaged" in talks with shortstop Edgar Renteria on Monday night.
The Giants aren't optimistic about re-signing the veteran shortstop, however, because he has multiple offers on the table. The Reds are known to have heavy interest and the Marlins were thought to be exploring the idea of a reunion earlier this winter. Renteria, 35, batted just .276/.332/.374 over 243 at-bats last season, but he was later named the World Series MVP.

Mon Jan 3 201123:36Report: Reds make offer to Edgar Renteria
According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds are believed to have an offer out for free agent shortstop Edgar Renteria.
Paul Janish is expected to be the primary shortstop for the Reds in 2011, so Renteria would have to accept a backup role. The 35-year-old infielder batted .276/.332/.374 with three home runs and 22 RBI over 243 at-bats last season. The World Series MVP felt "disrespected" by the Giants' reported one-year, $1 million contract offer last month, but it's hard to see him doing much better on the open market.

Fri Dec 31 201012:48Renteria wants to play two more years
Edgar Renteria said Thursday that he's planning to play two more years.
Renteria hasn't garnered much interest on the open market this winter so he might not even get that chance. He spoke with Reds GM Walt Jocketty on Thursday and could potentially be a heavily-used backup behind Paul Janish in Cincinnati. Renteria felt "disrespected" by the Giants' one-year, $1 million contract offer earlier this month, so one assumes the Reds would have to offer more. The 35-year-old infielder batted just .276/.332/.374 over 243 at-bats this past season.

Thu Dec 30 201016:52Reds have interest in Edgar Renteria
Reds GM Walt Jocketty confirmed Thursday that he has spoken to the agent for veteran shortstop Edgar Renteria.
Jocketty knows Renteria well from the years both spent in St. Louis. He could operate as an active backup behind Paul Janish in Cincinnati, starting about 50 games and serving as a late-innings pinch-hitter. Renteria called a one-year, $1 million offer from the Giants "disrespectful" earlier this month, so he's probably seeking something worth a little more in annual salary.

Sat Dec 18 201010:47Renteria quote taken out of context?
Edgar Renteria's agent, Barry Meister, says his client has no problem with the Giants and his comments to ESPN Deportes "weren't necessarily an accurate characterization."
It was reported Thursday that Renteria felt "disrespected" by the Giants' one-year, $1 million contract offer and that he'd "rather stay with my private business and share more time with my family" than take the lowball offer. Evidently the quote might have been taken out of context, but either way, Renteria isn't likely to see many, if any, better offers than what the Giants made him.

Fri Dec 17 201011:27Marlins have not discussed Edgar Renteria
Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post heard from two sources Friday that the Marlins have not discussed a reunion with Edgar Renteria.
That "disrespectful" one-year, $1 million offer from the Giants might start looking pretty sweet here soon for the 35-year-old Renteria. He won the World Series MVP, but potential suitors will be looking at the fact that he batted just .276/.332/.374 with three home runs and 22 RBI over 243 at-bats this past season. No club is going to overpay for an aging shortstop.

Fri Dec 17 201008:48Renteria felt 'disrespected' by Giants' offer
Edgar Renteria said Thursday that he felt "disrespected" by the Giants' recent one-year, $1 million contract offer.
"That offer from the Giants was a lack of respect," said the veteran shortstop. "A total disrespect. To play for a million dollars, I'd rather stay with my private business and share more time with my family. Thank God I'm well off financially and my money is well invested." Maybe he'll change his mind when he realizes that few clubs -- if any -- will be open to giving him more. The 35-year-old batted just .276/.332/.374 over 243 at-bats this past season.

Thu Dec 16 201012:43Report: Marlins interested in Edgar Renteria
Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports that the Marlins have interest in Edgar Renteria.
Renteria, of course, signed his first professional contract with the Marlins, so he would be coming full circle here. In addition to the Marlins, the 36-year-old infielder is reportedly deciding between the Cardinals and Giants. Frisaro writes that Renteria could provide some insurance at third base in the event that Matt Dominguez is not ready for the big leagues.

Mon Dec 13 201021:35Renteria leaning towards return to Giants
Mychael Urban of CSN Bay Area hears that Edgar Renteria is close to a decision and is leaning towards returning to the Giants.
The team didn't hear from him on Monday, but Urban writes that the deal could be finalized this week. The Giants reportedly offered the World Series MVP a contract similar to the $1 million deal they recently gave Pat Burrell. Renteria, 35, would return as a utility infielder and the primary backup to Miguel Tejada at shortstop.
