Sun Jun 9 201312:47Mitchell Boggs starting at Triple-A Memphis
Mitchell Boggs is being used as a starter for Triple-A Memphis.
It doesn't mean he would be considered for a starting role with the big club. Rather, the Cards want to afford Boggs as many innings as possible to work on his issues. He's allowed three runs -- one earned -- over six innings across two starts. It will be a while before the Cards consider Boggs for a promotion.

Fri May 31 201317:53Cards option RHP Boggs to Triple-A
Cardinals optioned RHP Mitchell Boggs to Triple-A Memphis.
The move comes on the heels of Boggs blowing a save in Thursday's loss to the Royals. The 29-year-old allowed three runs in four-plus innings over four appearances during his most recent stint with the club and now owns an ugly 11.05 ERA and 11/15 K/BB over 14 2/3 innings this season. He'll attempt to right himself in the minors once again.

Fri May 31 201300:39Mitchell Boggs blows save in record time
Getting the nod in the closer's role with Edward Mujica resting, Mitchell Boggs gave up a homer to the first batter he faced Thursday and blew the save against the Royals.
Jeff Francoeur hit a line-drive homer on Boggs' second pitch of the outing. Mujica definitely needed the rest tonight, but Trevor Rosenthal should been available and it was quite the surprise that Mike Matheny went to Boggs instead. Boggs ended up being pulled after walking the second batter he faced tonight. He has allowed 19 earned runs in 14 2/3 innings for the season.

Sat May 18 201317:05Cardinals recall Mitchell Boggs from Memphis
Cardinals recalled RHP Mitchell Boggs from Triple-A Memphis.
Boggs struggled mightily after being named the Cardinals' closer at the start of the 2013 season and was optioned to Memphis on May 3 with a 12.66 ERA. He wasn't exactly flawless during his time on the farm and will probably be limited to low-leverage situations for a while. Edward Mujica's job is obviously safe.

Tue May 14 201320:46Mitchell Boggs pitching well at Triple-A
Mitchell Boggs has tossed five scoreless innings since his demotion to Triple-A Memphis.
Boggs has permitted three hits, walked two and struck out four. Three of his five innings have required at least 20 pitches, but the Cardinals have been pleased with his progress beyond some efficiency issues. "It sounds like he has made a couple of good mechanical adjustments," manager Mike Matheny said. "The reports from the people who have been seeing him is that it looks like he is in a real good spot. He's an established major league player, so it's not an easy assignment. It seems like he is happy with how he's progressed. It's still yet to be seen how this all plays out, but he's going about this the right way."

Fri May 3 201309:31Cards option former closer Boggs to Triple-A
Cardinals optioned RHP Mitchell Boggs to Triple-A Memphis.
After losing the closer job, Boggs wasn't able to figure things out in setup and mop-up roles, so he'll try to work out the kinks at Triple-A. The Cards will continue to use Trevor Rosenthal as the primary setup man to Edward Mujica. The club has not announced a corresponding move, but John Gast is receiving consideration for a promotion.

Fri May 3 201308:04Mitchell Boggs expected to be sent down
The Cardinals are expected to option Mitchell Boggs to Triple-A Memphis prior to Friday's game.
Boggs entered the season as the team's closer with Jason Motte on the shelf, but he's since lost that job and has continued to struggle in setup and mop-up roles. The righty walked both Brewers hitters he faced Thursday and has now permitted a whopping 31 baserunners in 10 2/3 innings. It appears that John Gast is the likely option to replace him on the roster.

Thu May 2 201323:43Mitchell Boggs gets pulled after two walks
Mitchell Boggs walked both Brewers he faced before being pulled from Thursday's game against the Brewers.
Incredibly enough, he was the only one of the four Cardinals' relievers tonight not to give up a run. Joe Kelly allowed two un two-thirds of an inning, Trevor Rosenthal allowed an unearned run in the eighth and closer Edward Mujica gave up one in the ninth before finishing off the 6-5 victory. Both Kelly and Boggs would seem to be in line for demotions to Triple-A if the Cardinals can come up with anyone to replace them.

Sun Apr 21 201323:59Boggs struggles in latest relief appearance
Mitchell Boggs gave up four runs in an eighth inning relief appearance Sunday against the Phillies.
Boggs wasn't used in a save situation, and there hasn't been any indication that he'll be returning to the closer job anytime soon. He was charged with the loss after giving up a three-run shot to Erik Kratz and now has a 12.46 ERA in 10 appearances this season. The Cardinals will continue to go with Edward Mujica as their closer in the short-term, with Boggs and Trevor Rosenthal remaining in setup roles.

Sat Apr 20 201322:11Boggs throws scoreless ninth in win
Mitchell Boggs tossed a scoreless ninth inning in the Cardinals' defeat of the Phillies on Saturday.
The Cardinals had a 5-0 lead entering the final frame, so it was not a save situation. Boggs has rattled off two straight scoreless appearances but save opportunities for the time being are going to Edward Mujica.

Mon Apr 15 201322:55Mitchell Boggs finishes four-run game
Mitchell Boggs closed out a four-run game against the Pirates with a scoreless ninth inning on Monday.
Obviously, it's not a save. Still, Boggs had the outing he needed, with the caveat that he threw 22 pitches. Since he only threw eight pitches in blowing a save Sunday, he should still be available Tuesday if the Cardinals want to use him to close.

Sun Apr 14 201317:43Boggs blows ninth-inning lead in loss to MIL
Mitchell Boggs blew a ninth-inning lead Sunday in the Cardinals' loss to the Brewers.
Boggs entered with the Cardinals up by one run. He promptly gave up a single to Carlos Gomez and then Yuniesky Betancourt hit a game-tying RBI double. Boggs has allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- in just 6 1/3 innings this season, but Trevor Rosenthal has also been shaky. The Cardinals miss Jason Motte (elbow) badly.

Fri Apr 12 201322:50Boggs slams door on Brewers to earn save
Mitchell Boggs was a bit shaky in the ninth inning on Friday, but eventually slammed the door on the Brewers to record his second save of the season.
After recording the first out, Boggs walked Norichika Aoki and allowed a single to Jean Segura which put the tying runs on base. He battled back nicely though to whiff Ryan Braun and Rickie Weeks to end to game and preserve the Cardinals' victory. Every converted save gives him a little more leash and control over the closer's role.

Mon Apr 8 201320:06Mitchell Boggs melts down in non-save chance
Mitchell Boggs had a meltdown in a non-save chance Monday against the Reds, allowing seven runs -- six earned -- on two hits and four walks over 1/3 of an inning.
Two of the walks were intentional, and Boggs wasn't helped by his defense or multiple well-placed grounders and bloops. Still, that doesn't make fantasy owners that took the ERA and WHIP hit feel much better. Trevor Rosenthal blew a one-run lead in the eighth prior to Boggs taking over, and he's now failed to register a hold in both of his chances. Boggs should continue to work the ninth inning in Jason Motte's absence, but his leash isn't long.

Thu Apr 4 201302:33Mitchell Boggs blows save in 12th
Mitchell Boggs blew his first save chance for the Cardinals after giving up a run in the 12th to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
After the Cardinals took a 9-8 lead, Boggs gave up a single and hit a batter. The Diamondbacks tied it after that on a sac bunt and a sac fly. Obviously, it's not the kind of outing Boggs wanted in his first save chance as Jason Motte's replacement. Still, he did bounce back afterwards and pitch a scoreless 13th in a tie game. If Motte blows his next save chance, Mike Matheny will begin fielding questions on whether it's time to switch to Trevor Rosenthal.

Thu Mar 28 201315:45Mitchell Boggs notches third spring save
Mitchell Boggs was credited with his third save of the spring after pitching a perfect ninth Thursday against the Marlins.
The Cards went with Edward Mujica in the seventh, Trevor Rosenthal in the eighth and Boggs in the ninth in their 1-0 win today. That's likely how it will line up in the regular season until Jason Motte returns.

Sat Mar 23 201316:56Mitchell Boggs allows first run
Mitchell Boggs gave up his first run of the spring Saturday after earlier learning he was likely to open the season as the Cardinals' closer.
We trust Trevor Rosenthal and Fernando Salas at least as much as Boggs, but it's clear Boggs is Mike Matheny's choice to replace Jason Motte in the closer's role for now. It should give him quite a bit of fantasy value initially. How long it lasts depends on Motte's arm.

Sat Mar 23 201310:30Boggs expected to serve as Cardinals' closer
Mitchell Boggs is expected to open the season as the Cardinals' closer.
With Jason Motte (elbow) sidelined, Boggs will be given the first shot to serve as closer after posting a 2.21 ERA in a setup role last season. If he can hold down the job, he should have plenty of short-term fantasy value until Motte is ready to return. Trevor Rosenthal will also be a candidate for saves if Boggs struggles.

Fri Jan 18 201314:38Mitchell Boggs, Cards avoid arbitration
Cardinals avoided arbitration with RHP Mitchell Boggs by agreeing to a one-year contract.
The financial details are not yet available. Boggs, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time, posted a 2.21 ERA as Jason Motte's setup man last season. He'll be used in the same role this season.

Tue Dec 18 201200:15Boggs arbitration-eligible for first time
Mitchell Boggs is arbitration-eligible for the first time.
Boggs figures to get a pretty nice payout in his first time through the arbitration process after posting a 2.21 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 73 1/3 innings this past season. He should be a reliable setup man again in 2013 and will be next in line for saves if Jason Motte gets injured.
