Tommy Manzella was taking ground balls and playing catch Friday for the first time since breaking his hand on June 22.
An X-ray Thursday showed that there is still a fracture, but the shortstop was cleared to resume limited baseball activities. If all goes well, Manzella could take some practice swings this weekend. He looks to be on pace to return by early August as originally projected.

Wed Jun 23 201016:43Manzella out six weeks with fractured finger
Tommy Manzella has been diagnosed with a fractured left index finger and is expected to miss the next six weeks.
The 27-year-old shortstop has hit just .212/.259/.254 in 189 at-bats this season, so one may argue that this is actually a good thing for the Astros. Geoff Blum is starting at shortstop on Wednesday night, but Ozzie Navarro will be called up to handle the gig on a more full-time basis.
