Ramirez won't start Friday's game against the Rockies.

Ramirez has received most of the starts at third base since being traded to the Pirates from the Brewers, but he'll receive a rest Friday in favor of Jung-Ho Kang at third base. Given his age, it wouldn't be surprising if he receives a fair number of off days in September given the depth around the infield.

Ramirez is out of the lineup Monday against the Marlins, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

With some extra options on the infield, the veteran Ramirez may receive a fair number of days off over the last month of the regular season. That's the case for the second time in three days Monday, with Jung-Ho Kang replacing him at third base.

Ramirez sat out Saturday's tilt against the Giants with Mike Leake on the mound.

He entered Saturday with six hits and one RBI in 36 at-bats against Leake, making the decision to bench him an easy one. Manager Clint Hurdle went out of his way to say that Ramirez is no longer an everyday player, but the 17th-year vet holds a .333 batting average in 57 at-bats following a slow start in Pittsburgh.

Guesswork is still required when attempting to predict how the playing time will be distributed in the Pirates' infield now that everyone is healthy, but it goes without saying that Ramirez will not be playing every day. He sits Saturday with righty Mike Leake pitching for San Francisco, and Josh Harrison gets the start at the hot corner.

Ramirez went 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored Sunday against the Mets.

Ramirez's RBI single was part of a four-run seventh inning that broke open a 1-1 tie for the Pirates. The four hits brought his batting average to .249, the highest it's been since opening day.

Ramirez collected an RBI pinch-single Thursday, giving him 10 hits (including nine singles) in his last 25 at-bats.

With the rehab stints of Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer ahead of schedule, Ramirez is looking at diminished playing time at third base. He's taking ground balls at first base, so there's a chance he could see some action there. He probably couldn't play the position much worse than Pedro Alvarez and Michael Morse, even with no prior experience.

Ramirez, who is out of Thursday's lineup, may be preparing for a move to first base following the return of Josh Harrison. It's unclear what the split would be between Ramirez and Harrison at third base and Ramirez and Pedro Alvarez at first, but a platoon with Alvarez seems plausible given his struggles hitting left-handed pitching.

Ramirez struggled mightily when first joining the Pirates, but will take a six-game hitting streak with him to the bench Thursday. Sean Rodriguez will start in his place at third base, batting eighth for the Pirates.

Despite a .191 batting average in 47 at-bats, Ramirez continues to bat cleanup for the Bucs.

He's on a modest three-game hitting streak (5-for-13) but manager Clint Hurdle believes Ramirez batting fourth puts batters around him in more comfortable spots. Coincidence or not, Andrew McCutchen is batting .366 with three homers and 11 RBI with Ramirez hitting behind him.

Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a seeing-eye RBI single Wednesday against the Cubs.

Manager Clint Hurdle held true to his word, batting Ramirez cleanup throughout the series despite a 4-for-34 start from the third baseman. Hurdle likes Starling Marte, Neil Walker and Jung-Ho Kang in other batting order slots, so Ramirez could continue to bat fourth while he finds his stroke.

The Pirates could move Ramirez out of the cleanup spot if he doesn't start hitting, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Manager Clint Hurdle said Sunday that he'll give Ramirez another chance against the Cubs on Monday. "I want to give Aramis a little more time in the (fourth) spot, probably one more series," Hurdle said. "I'm not a big fan of continuing to pile things on Jung Ho's plate. Today, with Rammy out of there, it makes sense. We'll see if it plays out because we need to have somebody in that spot who can not just provide protection (for Andrew McCutchen), but also production." Ramirez is 4-for-30 thus far with the Pirates.

With the Pirates playing a day game after a night game, the veteran Ramirez will receive a needed breather, with Sean Rodriguez set to fill in for him at the hot corner. Ramirez went 0-for-8 over the first two games of the series, dropping his batting line to .133/.133/.200 in his seven games since joining the Pirates.

Ramirez collected his first two hits for the Pirates on Wednesday, going 2-for-5 against the Twins.

The third baseman went 0-for-14 with Pittsburgh before being credited with a gift double. He's started all four games since coming over from Milwaukee so it wouldn't be surprising to see the Bucs sit the 37-year-old for one of four weekend games in Cincinnati.

Ramirez went 0-for-3 Sunday and is hitless in seven at-bats since coming to the Pirates in a trade with Milwaukee.

The Bucs have slotted him cleanup in both games he's played. Ramirez hit .303 in his final 134 plate appearances with the Brewers, including an .859 OPS. With the likes of Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte batting around him in the lineup, the third baseman will likely see plenty of RBI opportunities. It's not out of the question Ramirez moves from third base to first when Josh Harrison returns -- even though Ramirez has never played the position, keeping his stick in the lineup.

Ramirez will make his first appearance in a Pirates uniform since he was traded from the organization in July of 2003. In five career at-bats against Saturday's starter Gio Gonzalez, Ramirez has failed to tally a hit but walked three times with an RBI.

Ramirez is expected to play for the Pirates on Saturday against Washington.

Apparently he isn't in too much of a hurry to face Max Scherzer, though he has a double in three at-bats against the righty. Ramirez is expected to see a majority of starts at third base for the next month with Josh Harrison (thumb) sidelined.
