Sun Sep 4 201118:31Randy Wells impressive yet again
Randy Wells was strong again Sunday, yielding just one earned run over six innings in a win over the Pirates.
Wells tossed his first career shutout on Monday and backed it up here by scattering seven hits. He's 6-1 over his last eight starts after going 0-3 with a 7.38 ERA in his first nine starts off the DL. Wells is on the deep-league radar as a spot start option against the Mets in Citi Field next week.

Tue Aug 30 201101:00Randy Wells befuddles Giants with two-hit SO
Randy Wells spun his first career shutout Monday, limiting the Giants to just two hits while walking one and striking out seven in the 7-0 win.
The Giants' sputtering offense hit a new low in this one, as an Andres Torres double in the third and a Mike Fontenot pinch-hit single is all they could muster against a pedestrian starter. Wells has pitched better of late, but he still has a 5.06 ERA over 18 starts after tonight's effort. He'll get the Pirates over the weekend.

Wed Aug 24 201123:32Randy Wells solid in win over Braves
Randy Wells held the Braves to just one run on two hits in 6 2/3 innings on Wednesday, improving to 5-4 in Chicago's 3-2 victory at home.
Wells is now the owner of a 4.53 ERA in 49 2/3 innings since the All-Star break after posting a 6.80 ERA in 46 1/3 frames going into the Midsummer Classic. He has a favorable matchup lined up for his next time out, where he will take on the Giants in San Francisco.

Sun Aug 7 201117:57Wells typically ineffective
Randy Wells was ineffective against the Reds on Sunday, allowing six runs on eight hits in seven innings of a Cubs loss.
He served up three more home runs, bringing his season total to 15 in just 77 1/3 innings. Today was the first time in 14 starts this year that Wells managed to complete seven innings of work. He'll take a 6.05 ERA and 1.59 WHIP into his weekend start in Atlanta.

Sat Jul 23 201116:03Wells excellent in win over Astros
Randy Wells tossed six innings of one-run ball in a 5-1 win over the Astros on Saturday.
It was his best outing (and his first win) since his first start of the season on April 4. Wells limited the Astros to just five hits -- all singles -- while fanning four and walking two. He threw 56 out of 89 pitches for strikes. While it was an encouraging step forward, he'll need to do more before being taken seriously in fantasy leagues again.

Sun Jul 17 201118:03Randy Wells takes no-decision
Randy Wells allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks in six innings of work on Sunday, taking a no-decision in Chicago's 7-5 loss to the Marlins at home.
He struck out four and allowed two first inning home runs, a two-run shot to Greg Dobbs and solo bomb to Hanley Ramirez. Wells has now allowed at least four runs in five consecutive starts, and has an ERA that rests at 6.71 through his first 52 1/3 innings of work.

Wed Jul 6 201122:30Randy Wells lousy again in loss
Randy Wells threw four rocky innings against the Nationals on Wednesday evening, allowing four runs on 10 hits and a walk in a 5-4 Cubs loss.
He struck out five, and served up home runs to Danny Espinosa and Ryan Zimmerman before being yanked. Wells has now allowed at least four runs in four consecutive starts, and watched his ERA climb all the way up to 6.80. Obviously, something's got to give.

Fri Jul 1 201117:14Randy Wells gives up six runs in loss
Randy Wells gave up six runs in 6 1/3 innings Friday in a loss to the White Sox.
Wells bounced back nicely from a two-run first, retiring 11 in a row at one point. In the sixth, he actually had a three-pitch inning. Brent Morel dropped down a bunt single to start the frame, but Carlos Quentin grounded into a double play on the one pitch he saw and Paul Konerko followed immediately with a groundout. Unfortunately, the seventh was a disaster, as Wells was charged with four runs before being pulled. He's now 0-3 with a 7.43 ERA in seven starts since coming off the DL.

Sun Jun 26 201117:51Randy Wells has another poor afternoon
Randy Wells got hit hard by the Royals on Sunday afternoon, allowing six runs on 10 hits in six innings of Chicago's 6-3 setback.
Wells struck out two and walked two in falling to 1-2 on the season. Through seven starts and 36 innings, he is now the owner of an ugly 6.25 ERA and even uglier 1.64 WHIP. Keep him benched in NL-only leagues.

Wed Jun 22 201121:20Randy Wells to get extra rest
Randy Wells will be given an extra day of rest and make his next start Sunday against the Royals.
The Cubs will go with Ryan Dempster and Carlos Zambrano on regular rest in the first two games of the series. Wells was solid in his last outing, but manager Mike Quade feels the right-hander could benefit from the extra day. "If somebody was going to benefit from the extra day, it would be Wells," Quade said.

Tue Jun 14 201123:46Wells gives up 2 earned over 6 innings
Randy Wells went six innings against the Brewers on Tuesday, allowing eight hits, three runs -- two earned -- and three walks while striking out two.
It was certainly a positive outing after Wells entered the night having given up 12 runs over just 12 innings since being activated from the disabled list. Wells isn't worth starting in any format right now, however, especially with the Yankees on deck.

Fri Jun 10 201100:44Wells struggles before rain delay
Randy Wells allowed three runs on three hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings before being removed following a rain delay in Thursday's 4-3 extra innings win over the Phillies.
Wells hasn't been sharp at all since coming off the DL, allowing 12 runs over just 12 innings. He also struggled in his two rehab starts before being activated, so perhaps the Cubs would have been better off giving him more time in the minors. The right-hander will try to right the ship next week against the Brewers.

Sat Jun 4 201119:44Wells takes no-decision vs. Cards
Randy Wells gave up four runs over 5 2/3 innings Saturday in a no-decision against the Cardinals.
Wells only surrendered three hits, but they were costly ones. For example, Albert Pujols touched him up for a two-run homer in the fourth and an RBI double in the sixth. Wells actually left the game with a one-run lead, but Sean Marshall allowed an inherited run to score. He has now allowed nine runs in 9 2/3 innings over his first two starts since coming off the disabled list. While he still has a chance at some mixed league value down the line, things probably won't get any easier against the Phillies next week.

Sat May 28 201115:59Wells gives up five runs in loss to Pirates
Randy Wells was chased for five runs over innings Saturday by the Pirates in his first start back from the disabled list.
The Pirates plated all five runs in the fourth inning. All told, Wells gave up five hits -- including a three-run homer to Ronny Cedeno -- while striking out seven and walking three. He was pulled after throwing 92 pitches. Wells should have some value in deeper mixed leagues eventually, but we'd keep him in reserve for a start against the Cardinals next week.

Sat May 28 201111:26Randy Wells activated
Cubs activated RHP Randy Wells from the 15-day disabled list.
Wells will get the start Saturday against the Pirates. Out since his first start of the season due to a strained forearm, he'll hope to provide some stability to a rotation that has been ravaged by injuries. Wells didn't pitch well during his rehab, allowing 10 runs -- seven earned -- across 7 2/3 innings.

Tue May 24 201117:11Wells (forearm) to start Saturday vs. Pirates
Randy Wells (forearm) will be activated from the disabled list to start Saturday against the Pirates.
As expected. Wells, who has been sidelined since early April with a right forearm strain, will effectively take the place of the injured Matt Garza in the starting rotation. He allowed 10 runs (seven earned) across 7 2/3 innings over two minor league rehab starts between Class A Peoria and Triple-A Iowa.

Wed May 18 201109:26Randy Wells could be back for next home stand
Randy Wells (forearm) could rejoin the Cubs rotation during the team's next home stand, which begins on May 24.
The nine-game home stand stretches through June 1. Wells makes his second rehab start on Sunday, and if that goes well, it seems possible that he could be back in the rotation late next week. He struggled in his first outing Tuesday, though, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on six hits over 3 2/3 innings for Single-A Peoria.

Tue May 17 201120:34Randy Wells shaky in rehab start
Randy Wells (forearm) was shaky in a rehab start for Single-A Peoria Tuesday, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on six hits over 3 2/3 innings.
As long as he felt fine physically, we're not too concerned with the results. Barring a setback, Wells should return before the end of the month.

Fri May 13 201111:43Randy Wells to make rehab start Tuesday
Randy Wells (forearm) is expected to make a rehab start Tuesday with an undetermined Cubs' minor league affiliate.
Wells had an extended spring training outing Thursday that evidently went well, so he's been cleared to begin a rehab assignment. He's expected to be back in a couple weeks, barring a setback.

Thu May 12 201109:46Randy Wells to begin rehab soon
If Thursday's extended spring training appearance goes well, Randy Wells (forearm) will start a rehab assignment next Tuesday.
The Cubs have been pleased with Wells' recent progress, and if all goes well, he should be back in a couple week. Andrew Cashner (shoulder) is on the same schedule as Wells, only he's 3-4 days behind him, so he could also be back late this month.
