Tue Dec 7 201012:33Matt Diaz likely to sign contract soon
Matt Diaz's agent said Tuesday that his client is likely to sign soon.
Diaz has drawn interest from several teams seeking a reliable backup outfielder, including the Red Sox, Yankees, Phillies and Mariners. The 32-year-old posted a pedestrian .250/.302/.438 overall batting line this year with seven homers and 31 RBI, but he has always crushed lefties.

Mon Dec 6 201016:17M's interested in Matt Diaz
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Mariners are interested in free agent outfielder Matt Diaz.
According to Morosi, the Mariners view him as a platoon partner for Michael Saunders in left field. Diaz, who turns 33 in March, batted .250/.302/.438 with seven homers and 31 RBI this past season, but has a 907 lifetime OPS against left-handed pitching. He'll get plenty of offers this winter, so it will be interesting to see if Diaz chooses the opportunity to win over playing time.

Mon Dec 6 201013:49Yanks have interest in outfielder Matt Diaz
The Yankees have expressed interest in free agent outfielder Matt Diaz, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Diaz is also drawing interest from the Phillies and a few other teams. He's a fine hitter against left-handers and would do well in a platoon situation just about anywhere. The Yankees, though, will be asking him to serve primarily as a backup. Diaz may want more playing time than that.

Sun Dec 5 201011:00Phillies likely to pursue Diaz, Francoeur
The Phillies are expected to pursue Matt Diaz and Jeff Francoeur this offseason.
They're expecting to lose Jayson Werth and will be looking for someone that can mash against left-handed pitching. Diaz is a career .325 hitter against southpaws, and Francoeur has a .299 mark against them. Both players would also represent insurance in case Domonic Brown proves to not be ready. Francoeur has indicated a desire to be an everyday player, but it remains to be seen if he'll get that opportunity.

Sat Dec 4 201015:38Pirates interested in Matt Diaz, Jack Cust
Free agents Matt Diaz and Jack Cust are on Pirates GM Neal Huntington's radar.
Huntington is reportedly looked for "a corner outfielder with some pop who hammers left-handed pitching," which fits Diaz to a T, as he has a career .335/.373/.533 batting line against southpaws. Cust would fit the "pop" description, but he's a much better hitter against right-handed pitching. The Pirates are looking for outfield depth after deciding to non-tender Lastings Milledge.

Thu Dec 2 201016:17Braves non-tender outfielder Matt Diaz
Braves non-tendered OF Matt Diaz.
As expected. The Braves are expected to move Martin Prado to left field next season and start Dan Uggla at second base. That would have left little playing time for Diaz, who made $2.55 million this past season and would have gained a raise via the salary arbitration process. The Braves chose to tender contracts to Prado, Jair Jurrjens, Peter Moylan and Eric O'Flaherty.
Wed Dec 1 201017:08Braves expected to non-tender Diaz
Mark Bowman of MLB.com writes that the Braves are expected to non-tender Matt Diaz.
According to Bowman, the Braves haven't made any contact with Diaz or his agent since the season ended, so the writing is on the wall. He was already on the bubble before the team acquired Dan Uggla, but now that Martin Prado is ticketed for left field, it would be silly to give Diaz a raise from the $2.55 million he made this past season. The lefty-killer will have no shortage of suitors in free agency, though.

Tue Jul 6 201022:41Diaz lifts Braves in extra innings
Matt Diaz finished 3-for-5 on Tuesday night with a pair of doubles, one of which drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th as Atlanta topped Philadelphia 4-3.
Diaz had just one hit in his first seven at-bats since returning from the disabled list at the end of June, but he looked good tonight. His average sits at .200, but expect to see it climb back toward his career mark of .302 as the season progresses.
Tue Jun 29 201017:13Braves activate Matt Diaz from DL
Braves activated OF Matt Diaz from the 15-day disabled list.
He fills the roster spot vacated by Jason Heyward, who was placed on the disabled list with a thumb injury. Diaz is returning from a thumb injury of his own. He can't do it all on his own, but he'll provide a nice boost for a team who has batted just .245 with a 683 OPS against left-handed pitching this season.
Mon Jun 28 201022:41Diaz (thumb) to be activated from DL
Matt Diaz (thumb) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday.
He'll take the place of Jason Heyward on the roster. Diaz, who has been sidelined since the middle of May after thumb surgery, was 3-for-12 (.250) during a three-game rehab stint with Triple-A Gwinnett.

Braves manager Bobby Cox said Monday that Matt Diaz (thumb) could soon be activated from the disabled list.
Diaz is 3-for-7 with a double and three RBI over his first two minor league rehab games with Triple-A Gwinnett. Cox wouldn't confirm a timetable, but it's probably fair to say he could be back this weekend against the Marlins.

Matt Diaz took swings on Thursday afternoon for the first time since undergoing thumb surgery in mid-May.
Diaz passed a grip test on Thursday morning and can now begin ramping up his rehab efforts. "I'm hoping he lets me hit off the tee tonight, tomorrow, the next few days," Diaz said before Thursday's game against the Braves. "Hopefully in a few days, I'm taking batting practice."

Matt Diaz underwent surgery Wednesday on his right thumb.

Sat May 15 201016:51Diaz to have surgery on thumb Wednesday
Matt Diaz is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday to remove a "foreign body" from his right thumb.
Dave O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution suspects that Diaz may have a deep splinter in his hand. If that's the case, it shouldn't cost him more than a few weeks. He's already on the 15-day disabled list.

Sat May 15 201015:54Diaz adds to Braves' injury woes
Braves placed OF Matt Diaz on the 15-day disabled list with an infected thumb.
Just as the Braves got Yunel Escobar back, they lose Diaz. Hopefully the infection isn't serious and Diaz will miss nothing more than the minimum. He was hitting .178/.231/.247 in 79 plate appearances.
Wed May 5 201022:43Diaz wins the game for Braves
Matt Diaz hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the top of the 10th inning as the Braves beat the Nationals on Wednesday night.
Diaz was off to a .180 start coming into tonight and was playing sparingly. But with Jason Heyward coming up with a sore groin tonight, Diaz is looking at regular at-bats in the short-term. He's worth a look in NL-only formats.
