Orta, a former fourth-round pick, has a career 4.37 ERA in parts of four seasons in the minors. He missed all of 2010 recovering from Tommy John surgery. The Yankees also signed John Maine this week as organizational depth. | ||||||

The M's have done a bit of house cleaning in the past 24 hours, also cutting loose veteran outfielder Eric Byrnes. Orta, a 25-year-old right-hander, had a 1.94 ERA and 41/18 K/BB ratio in 41 2/3 innings of relief last year at Double-A but eventually underwent Tommy John surgery. He's likely to pass through waivers because he is still recovering from the procedure. | ||||||
