Felipe Paulino underwent surgery on his right shoulder last week.
Paulino had a cyst removed from the back of his shoulder and also had his rotator cuff and labrum cleaned up. "They first tried to decompress the nerve, and when they went inside, they found a big cyst in the back of my shoulder that was pinching my nerve. That's what was causing my weakness and soreness in my shoulder," Paulino said. "He removed that and everything was good. I'm good right now, because he also cleaned out my rotator cuff, my labrum and everything around it. I expect to be back and playing catch again in two weeks." While Paulino expects to be fine by spring training, it's possible that he could be non-tendered.

Paulino's recovery from Tommy John surgery has been stalled by back and shoulder issues, but he's back on track. The righty should should the Royals sometime next month. "I'm a little off mechanically, but that's normal," Paulino said. "I haven't pitched much in a long time, but I'm focused on working those mechanics. Everything - back, shoulder, elbow - feels good, so I'm happy with where I'm at right now."

Felipe Paulino (elbow, shoulder) resumed a rehab assignment at Double-A Northwest Arkansas Saturday.
Paulino allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over three innings of work. The right-hander had his rehab stalled for nearly eight weeks due to back and shoulder soreness. He'll be an option for the rotation later this month but could come back as a reliever.

The next step is two simulated innings on Thursday and three simulated innings on July 30. If those two sessions go well, he should be able to resume a rehab assignment. Paulino has had to start and stop his rehab a couple times but should return sometime next month if he can avoid any more setbacks.

Paulino has been shut down recently with a sore shoulder, but he's feeling much better and could resume his rehab assignment soon if Friday's session goes well. "I feel good," he insisted. "What they really want to see is how my shoulder feels the day after my bullpen. That's the only concern. My back (an earlier ailment) is fine. And my elbow is fine."
