The Brewers designated Rivera for assignment a week ago after appearing in just one big league game this season. He played 111 games for Triple-A Colorado Springs, batting .227 with six home runs and 48 RBIs. Rivera is eligible to become a minor league free agent this winter.

Rivera put up the best numbers of his career with Double-A Biloxi earlier this season, and he continues to hit despite moving up a level a couple weeks ago. He figures to remain in the minors all season barring a September call-up, but his offensive showing this season could earn him a call-up sooner than would have been expected entering the season.

Rivera was promoted to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Thursday, the Journal-Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt reports.

The Brewers promoted Luis Sardinas to take Jean Segura's place after Segura landed on the DL, so Rivera's time with the Sky Sox could be short lived. That said, Rivera has been on a tear this year, slashing .322/.366/.452 with eight steals in 128 plate appearances at Double-A. There is no denying that Rivera is playing over his head, but he has also earned a promotion. He figures to provide organizational middle-infield depth for the Brewers over the next few years.

Rivera is 11-for-26 (.423) with a home run and five RBI through eight games with Double-A Biloxi.

Rivera has not been much of a hitter in his minor league career, but he did post a .714 OPS with Biloxi last season -- his best mark at any stop in his career -- and is off to a fast start this season. Rivera is a quality defensive shortstop, but with top shortstop prospect Orlando Arcia also stationed in Biloxi, Rivera is serving as the club's regular second baseman.

The Brewers optioned Rivera to Double-A Biloxi on Monday.

Rivera did not have a true chance to earn a roster spot with the Brewers this year, but he was able to gain some experience with the big league club. He figures to see regular action with Biloxi, but if top prospect Orlando Arcia is also assigned to Double-A, some of Rivera's playing time could come at second base.

The Brewers added Rivera to their 40-man roster Thursday.

Rivera does not hit much, but he is known for his defensive abilities in the middle infield. He reached the Double-A level for the first time in 2014 and will likely open there next season.
