Wed Dec 12 201810:22McCutchen on the move, other deals percolate at meetings
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Andrew McCutchen moving into Philadelphia's outfield, more talk about a megadeal involving Noah Syndergaard and J.T. Realmuto and veteran pitcher Ivan Nova on the go.The winter meetings picked up a bit Tuesday, but any big deals for the likes of Corey Kluber, Manny Machado and Bryce Harper remained on deck. There were reports the Baltimore Orioles were close to hiring a manager in Chicago Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde. But the O's said those stories were premature and they wouldn't make a decision before leaving Las Vegas."We don't have a manager," newly hired general manager Mike Elias said. The World Series champion Red Sox made a move, too — with their lineup. AL MVP Mookie Betts will shift out of the leadoff spot and bat behind Andrew Benintendi, manager Alex Cora said."I think we're going to maximize Mookie in a different spot. Flip-flop them, Beni leading off and Mookie hitting second. Talked to him, it makes sense," Cora said."And I know Beni's OK with it. But if you... [More]

LAS VEGAS (AP) — All-Star outfielder Andrew McCutchen and the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a $50 million, three-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the agreement, which includes a club option for 2022, is subject to a successful physical. The 32-year-old McCutchen was an All-Star each season from 2011-15, topping .300 in batting average from 2012-14. Mon Oct 1 201817:40Phillies seek answers after collapsing down the stretch
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — It took the Philadelphia Phillies a little longer than usual to arrive at a familiar spot. After leading their division with the second-best record in the National League one week into August, the Phillies went 16-33 over the final 49 games and finished with a losing record (80-82) for the sixth straight season. There are several reasons for the collapse, and the Phillies will enter the offseason with plenty of questions as they try to reshape the roster into one that can contend for a full season. Philadelphia could try to land a big-name free agent like Bryce Harper or Manny Machado — or even both."There's been some really important answers but there's things we have to address this offseason and future offseasons," general manager Matt Klentak said Monday.Gabe Kapler's first season as manager was adventurous. His unconventional approach drew a ton of scrutiny and criticism in Philadelphia, especially after the team fell apart. But Klentak is sticking by his analytics-minded... [More]
Thu Sep 13 201822:39Phillies' collapse result of several factors
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A surprising first half and a surge in early August had the Philadelphia Phillies in prime position to reach the postseason. Then they fell apart.Since completing a four-game sweep over the Miami Marlins on Aug. 5, the Phillies (74-71) are 11-23 and 0-10-1 in those series. They went from 1 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta in the NL East to 7 1/2 games behind with only 17 games to play.Philadelphia was only one game behind the Cubs for best record in the National League before the tailspin began. Now, finishing with a winning mark will be a challenge.Manager Gabe Kapler's positive approach hasn't wavered, but even he can't find a way to sugarcoat this collapse."There's no question that we can play better baseball," Kapler said. "We are more talented and more prepared than the outcomes that we're getting, the losses we've racked up recently."So, what happened?"It's not one thing," Kapler said. "It's a collection of many, many things. And to try to boil it down to one thing doesn't... [More]

Fri Jul 13 201812:58FANTASY PLAYS: All-Star break a perfect time to reassess
The All-Star break is the perfect time for you to re-evaluate your fantasy baseball team. It's a good time to determine what it will take to build a squad that can make a strong final push toward your league's playoffs. Let's focus on players you'll want to target in trades during and after the break.CARLOS SANTANA, 1B, PhilliesSantana is batting just .216, but he has 14 home runs and 52 RBIs. His on base percentage (OBP) of .359 is well above the major league average. His batting average on balls in play (BABIP) of .209 is a career low and suggests that he's been hitting into some bad luck. For his career his batting average is .235 in the first half, and .262 in the second half.BRIAN DOZIER, 2B, TwinsWhen Dozier is firing on all cylinders he helps you in the home run and stolen base categories. He has slumped badly early on, however as has been the case throughout his career, Dozier is heating up just as the dog days of summer arrive. His career first half slash line of .241/.320/.427...
