RHP Williams Perez (1-1) took his first loss of the season as he gave up six runs and nine hits in six innings with two walks and two strikeouts at Pittsburgh. However, manager Fredi Gonzalez was happy to get six innings from Perez after needing to use six relievers for a total of 5 1/3 innings on Sunday in a 13-inning loss at Kansas City.

After quickly retiring the side in order in the first, Perez allowed a runner to reach scoring position in each of the next three innings.

Perez had a brutal August (8.44 ERA, 11:15 K:BB in five starts) and owns a 5.42 ERA on the season.

While the results in Atlanta this season have been disappointing for Perez overall (5.65 ERA, 13.4% K%, 11.1% BB%), he's flashed enough at Triple-A (23.4% K%, 6.5% BB%) to remain in the mix for a rotation spot in 2016 depending on the quality of the alternatives the Braves acquire over the course of the offseason. He's currently lined up for a two-start week beginning Monday against the Phillies before a second turn September 12 against the Mets.

Mike Foltynewicz was placed on the 15-day DL with an illness, so Perez will take his spot in the rotation for now. Perez posted a 5.33 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 77.2 innings as a starter earlier this season, so it would be wise to stay away from him in most formats.

Another disastrous outing Friday was the last straw for Perez -- he was clobbered for eight runs in just 1.2 innings against the Yankees to fall to 0-5 with a 9.87 ERA since his return from the DL in late July. Jacob Brigham was recalled in a corresponding move, but it's uncertain whom the Braves will turn to fill the fifth rotation spot in September.

Perez has been on a very steep decline as of late. Since going 4-0 with a 2.14 ERA in his first seven starts, Perez is 0-5 with a 9.08 ERA in his last seven outings. During that time he has walked more batters, 21, than he has struck out, 16. It's unlikely that any fantasy owners are aboard this sinking ship, but if they are, it's probably time to find a life preserver.

Perez got hammered Saturday, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks over 4.2 innings, but escaped with a no-decision. He struck out four.

He's seen his ERA balloon by nearly two full runs over five starts since returning from the DL, but with the Braves already looking ahead to 2016, Perez will likely remain in the rotation and given a chance to turn things around. His next start is scheduled for Friday, at home against the Yankees.
