The other option to take Wandy Rodriguez's spot was Jeff Locke, but Locke started for Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday. Cumpton holds a 4.26 ERA over two starts with the Pirates this season and boasts a 1.35 mark over six outings at Indianapolis. He's worthy of a look in NL-only leagues.

Brandon Cumpton allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings of work but got the no-decision as the Pirates lost to the Orioles in 10 innings on Thursday.
Cumpton allowed seven hits, issued no walks, and struck out four. It wasn't a bad outing for Cumpton; the Orioles were just finding the right open spaces for hits. He has a 0.95 WHIP after two starts, close to what he put up at Triple-A Indianapolis prior to his call-up, which makes him worth a shot in NL-only formats.

Thu Apr 24 201415:57Brandon Cumpton allows two runs in loss
Brandon Cumpton took a tough loss after allowing two runs and four hits in seven innings Thursday against the Reds.
Cumpton walked just one, but he did hit three batters. Of course, those don't count against his WHIP, which was a nice 0.71 for the game. He should remain a useable NL-only pitcher for as long as he's needed in the rotation.

Tue Apr 22 201420:13Pirates yet to decide on Thursday starter
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Tuesday that the team has yet to decide on a starter for Thursday in place of the injured Wandy Rodriguez (knee).
MLB.com's Tom Singer lists relievers Jeanmar Gomez or Stolmy Pimentel and Triple-A Indianapolis starter Brandon Cumpton as the most likely options. Jeff Locke started for Indianapolis on Monday, so he's not under consideration. "We've got a couple of different guys in-house. We'll see who lines up," Hurdle said.

Brandon Cumpton shut out the Twins for five innings, striking out four, in the Pirates' 2-1 win Wednesday.

Fri Mar 14 201416:27Brandon Compton yields two unearned runs
Brandon Cumpton surrendered a pair of unearned runs over four innings Friday in his start against the Phillies.
Cumpton is the Pirates' seven starter, but he'd probably be useful in NL-only leagues if he's needed in the rotation. Considering that Wandy Rodriguez and his iffy elbow and Edinson Volquez are two of the guys ahead of him, there's a chance he'll have some value early on.

Cumpton struck out five on the night, as he had little trouble working his way through the suddenly slumping Cards' lineup. The righty will be sent back down to Triple-A, but with a 2.78 ERA over four starts this season, he's earned another look if the Pirates need someone later this season.
