Tabata went 2-for-4 with a game-winning RBI single in his first start since June 21 on Friday.
For whatever reason, Tabata appears to have been in the Pirates' doghouse the last couple months. Perhaps a clutch single could help him work his way back. Expect him to serve as a pinch-hitter with occasional starts in a crowded outfield down the stretch.

Tabata was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.
The 26-year-old has split the season between the Pirates and Triple-A. In 62 games for Pittsburgh, Tabata is hitting .289/.327/.331 with four doubles and 14 RBI. In a corresponding move, the Pirates optioned Gregory Polanco to Triple-A.

Jose Tabata has accepted his assignment to Triple-A.
Tabata was placed on outright waivers by the Pirates earlier this week and passed through without drawing a claim. The 25-year-old corner outfielder is now off Pittsburgh's 40-man roster, but he is still owed about $10 million in guaranteed money through 2016.

Jose Tabata left the second game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Yankees with an apparent leg injury.
Tabata appeared to pull a hamstring while running the bases as he was gunned down by a mile trying to go from first to third on a single. Travis Snider replaced him in right field. Look for the team to provide an update on his status shortly.

Wed May 14 201400:29Tabata has three hits as Bucs lose to Brewers
Jose Tabata went 3-for-4 in Tuesday's loss to the Brewers.
Tabata had three of the Pirates' nine hits on the evening, raising his batting average to .269 for the season. He also unsuccessfully attempted his first stolen base of the year. Clamoring for prospect Gregory Polanco will continue, but Tabata likely has a hold on the starting job until June at the earliest.

Sat Apr 26 201419:20Tabata goes 3-for-4, Pirates take down Cards
Jose Tabata finished 3-for-4 with an RBI in the Pirates' 6-1 win over the Cardinals on Saturday.
Tabata also made an impressive running catch on the right-field warning track in the bottom of the seventh inning to rob Matt Holliday of an RBI extra-base hit. All three of Tabata's hits were singles. He's batting .271/.306/.305 on the young season.

Sat Apr 26 201400:32Tabata has two hits in loss to Cardinals
Jose Tabata went 2-for-4 with a strikeout in Friday's loss to the Cardinals.
Tabata started in left field and batted leadoff Friday while the struggling Starling Marte was given the day off. He had two of the team's four hits on the evening. Neither Tabata nor Travis Snider are really distinguishing themselves in right field right now, so it might not be long before we see top prospect Gregory Polanco in the majors.

Thu Apr 17 201421:04Jose Tabata available off the bench
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said that Jose Tabata will be available off the bench Thursday.
Tabata left Wednesday's game with what was called a mild concussion at the time, but the club has since determined he doesn't have a concussion at all. "He does not have a concussion," Hurdle said. "He went through a battery of tests today starting with the doctor. They do the concussion test, the computer test, he passed that. He ran on the field, went in the cage, reflexes, all the different activities that we could run him through, and he's going to be available off the bench."

Wed Apr 16 201414:42Jose Tabata diagnosed with 'mild' concussion
Jose Tabata has been diagnosed with "mild" concussion-like symptoms.
Tabata had to leave Wednesday's game after colliding with the left field wall. Even though his concussion symptoms are apparently "mild," the Pirates are surely going to place him on the 7-day concussion DL. Travis Snider would see a bump in playing time with Tabata out.

Jose Tabata left Wednesday's game against the Reds after colliding with the
Tabata made a nice running catch, but he paid the price. He looked woozy after getting up and the Pirates trainer was checking his head/jaw area. It's certainly possible that he could have a concussion, but we likely won't know more until later Wednesday or Thursday. Starling Marte, who had been given a day off, took Tabata's spot in left field.

Tue Mar 25 201417:42Jose Tabata goes 4-for-4, homers
Jose Tabata went 4-for-4 with a homer, a double and four RBI in the Pirates' 22-run outburst Tuesday.
Tabata's showing doesn't stand out so much with the Pirates collecting 29 hits, but at least it's a start for him. Typically a weaker hitter in March and April, he entered the day at .114/.114/.143 in 35 spring at-bats. Despite his struggles, he still looks like the Pirates' best option in right field to us.

Thu Mar 13 201416:50Jose Tabata off to 3-for-22 start this spring
Jose Tabata went 0-for-3 in Thursday's loss and is 3-for-22 with no extra-base hits this spring.
Tabata was putting up pretty solid numbers last year when the Pirates went out and got Marlon Byrd to start over him. Of course, Byrd is gone now, giving Tabata another opportunity to prove that he should be Pittsburgh's right fielder. Unfortunately, his typical slow starts could work against him. He's posted just a .628 OPS in April in his career (his next lowest month is .689 in June).

Fri Aug 23 201301:38Tabata drives in three runs in win vs. Giants
Jose Tabata finished 3-for-4 with a three-run double and two runs scored in Thursday's 10-5 win over the Giants.
Tabata is now hitting .321 (17-for-53) with six extra-base hits (two homers), eight RBI, five walks, and six runs scored through 16 games this month. The Pirates were criticized in some circles for not trading for a right fielder before the July 31 deadline, but the 25-year-old is beginning to deliver on some of the promise he showed early on in his career. Hitting leadoff with Starling Marte out of the lineup, he could be worth a look in deeper mixed fantasy leagues.

Fri Aug 16 201322:32Tabata launches two-run homer in victory
Jose Tabata connected for a two-run home run and drew a walk in Friday's 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks.
His blast off J.J. Putz in the eighth inning provided some valuable late insurance for the Pirates' bullpen. Tabata is now hitting .354 (11-for-31) with five extra-base hits (two homers) and five walks in 11 games this month. It's unclear how things will shake out in right field now that Andrew Lambo is with the big club, but it's going to be tough to sit Tabata if he keeps producing like this.

Tue Aug 13 201318:50Jose Tabata scratched with the flu
Jose Tabata was scratched from the Pirates' lineup Tuesday due to flu-like symptoms.
He should be fine in a day or two. Andrew Lambo will make his major league debut in right field in Tabata's place.
