Mon Aug 8 2011 | 16:41 | Padres call up INF-OF Darnell from minors |
Padres purchased the contract of INF-OF James Darnell from Triple-A Tucson. |
Darnell has a .304/.404/.515 batting line and an impressive 239/211 K/BB ratio over parts of four seasons in the minor leagues. He struggled a bit after getting off to a hot start at the Triple-A level, but his polished approach at the plate should serve him well in his first taste of the major leagues. While his experience at third base could prove valuable while Chase Headley is on the disabled list, it's more likely he ends up in the outfield in the long-term. |

Mon Jul 11 2011 | 05:02 | Prospect Darnell offered clear path to majors |
Padres General Manager Jed Hoyer has told minor league prospect James Darnell to increase his major league versatility by learning how to play other positions. |
Darnell's promotion is hindered because fellow third baseman and Padres regular Chase Headley is locked up through 2014. By learning any number of new fielding positions, the 24-year-old Darnell would be an immediate upgrade in the Padres' lineup. Darnell has been explosive at the plate since his 2008 debut, amassing a combined .307/.407 /.523 batting line over 1,227 at-bats. He's hitting an electric .353 with three homers in his first 17 at-bats at Triple-A Tucson. |
